“Very disappointing”

We visited on the 1st June and had a leisurely stroll around the gardens which were supposed to be magnificent but in fact were very disappointing. It is very clear that there are not enough staff to tend the gardens as everywhere looked very untidy. The formal garden at the rear of the chateau is famous for its roses but very little else. The vegetable garden was very neglected and looked run down. This said the views of the chateau from the garden give plenty of photo opportunities but don't bother with the guided tour of the interior of the chateau. The tour guide will only speak rapid French and you only visit three rooms so we were very disappointed. Not at all like the National Trust and they could learn a lot from this organisation in how to sell the chateau to modern day visitors and their expectations.

Beautiful medieval house much altered and added on to. The gardens and moat are beautiful in good weather and make sure you ask the guide about the second world war story.

We recently visited with our nearly 3 yr old and 15mth old. We felt delighted when we turned up at this chateau just prior to the 2pm opening time. It looked like a true fairy tale castle and we sat in the vast grassy car park enjoying a leisurely picnic by the river with lovely views . However, on entering the chateau it was clear the only option was to go on a guided tour to see the interior. We hung around in the gardens for 30mins and were then dutifully called with the bell. The tour was in rapid French which lost us and an elderly English couple (who did speak better Frency than us but also thought it was very fast) after a couple of minutes (quite a while in the grounds outside where at least the children could run around). Ominously we were then ushered into the chateau and the door was locked. We were stuck in a stately home room with lots of antique furniture with the continuing rapid French and a 15mth old who was trying to get under the barrier onto the furniture and a bored 2 year old. My husband managed to escape with the youngest child and I thought we would carry on but other than looking at a few stuffed deer there was not much to entertain her. The kitchen followed and when she banged her head on a door and started screaming we made our escape, thankfully the door was not in fact locked. On escaping from the gate of the chateau to the car park a queue of tourists were waiting patiently outside. All a bit confusing when it stated it was open from 2-6pm.
This would be fine if you understand rapid French and if you have young children don't even consider going on the tour inside! You could enjoy the views in the car park and have a picnic for free!

Small, human scale house with an interesting family history. Excellent guide and small group, so we got a lot out of the visit. Pleasant, but not spectacular, gardens
