“Charming & friendly Somerset Hotel”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

I booked this hotel on a Wowcher deal for a 2 night stay in a twin room with breakfast and at a bargain price. The hotel was well signed with brown tourist signs from Chard, so although its a liitle remote it was reasonably easy to find and a nice peaceful location. Our reception was warm and friendly and we were given a key and shown to our room, which was spacious, well appointed and overlooked a courtyard garden. The beds were very comfortable. We enjoyed drinks at the bar, which had several local real ales and a good selection of wines, spirits & soft drinks. In the evenings the log burning stove was lit in the central fire place and we relaxed in the comfortable snug area next to the bar.We dined in the restaurant both evenings & found the food to be of a very high standard with locally sourced produce. The menu choices were the same each evening, but we found this adequate for a 2 night stay. The 3 way pork dish was in my opinion worthy of a MasterChef finalist! The service in the restaurant & throughout the hotel was friendly & efficient. Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice. The fresh fruit salad and full English breakfast were both excellent. We made the most of the hotels good position for visiting both country and coastal attractions. Lyme Regis is only 20 mins drive.
I highly recommend this delightful and charming family run country hotel, which upholds good old-fashioned standards of friendly hospitality.

Room Tip: Speak to the staff when booking and I'm sure that they will find a room suitable to your require...

We got a cheap two day break through Wowcher for this hotel. The room was large and comfortable.' tastefully decorated and had a two seater settee. Food was very good and although the menu was the same for the two nights we stayed the chef cooked a different meal for me as I have an onion allergy and all mains had onions in them. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We had room 24. Very quiet and looked out on to the garden which was accessible by patio doors.

A very enjoyable stay in this small, family run hotel. Delightfully quiet at night. The hotel was warm and fresh with none of the damp odour so common in older properties. My only criticism of the room would be I would have liked a thicker curtain or extra blind to cut out the early morning light. The restaurant was busy every evening we were there with some large parties but with three different dining areas they did not intrude on the intimacy of a romantic break. A nice, quite reasonably priced menu and wine list in the main restaurant and a comfortable bar and lounge area. The weather outside was windy and wet - some would say wild - so it was nice to be cosy in front of a fire.

Booked here on a Groupon deal for two nights as we were visiting friends. The hotel is set back in fields behind a small housing estate so we were glad of our SAT nav!! On arriving we were welcomed and given our keys after being told all about the bar/restaurant/breakfast etc. Our room was at the back of the hotel overlooking the car park and was a good size and clean.
We ate out with our friends on the first night but breakfast the next morning was very good. Lots of selections of cereals and juice although I have to say my poached egg was overdone so slightly disappointing , the young ladies who served us were very attentive.
We ate in the restaurant that evening and the meal was excellent.
All in all a very nice stay in a pleasant hotel. My Husband , who sleeps anywhere , wasn't keen on the bed as it was slightly lumpy and uncomfortable and the whole place could do with an upgrade. But as I put in my title the staff made the place as they were all very warm , friendly and helpful.
Would stay again when visiting friends.

We liked this place. We had a lovely dinner for two.

This place is what it is. It dosn't try to be something it isn't. We liked that. We enjoted friendly sevide, good food and a reasonable wine list.

We recommend this place. The trick to doing that is first finding it, as its a hidden little gem with an unpromising approach through a 1960's Chard housing estate, but worth the bother.

Do not be put off by the approach to this hotel as you drive through a housing estate. When you find the lane leading to the hotel, at first, the lights of the industrial estate next door do not bode well but then you see the hotel and it's welcoming facade in a somewhat incongruous setting. The corridors are narrow but the rooms very well appointed and comfortable. Nice clean bathroom, large fluffy towels, tea and coffee making equipment, free wifi, TV etc. Breakfast is freshly cooked to order and the staff are friendly and helpful. We had dinner both nights and the food was generally good if a little overpriced. 3 very small queen scallops for just under £9, mains we tried were pork, a little overcooked, very nice lamb, soufflé roulade , fish cakes, mostly very good but all about 4 or 5 pounds overpriced. This is a busy hotel, offering some good deals and would visit again.

Very pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and we hope to welcome you back again

Rebecca's back in the kitchen now - Sauteed Tiger Prawns & Chorizo in Garlic Butter or Fresh Crab & Chilli cakes with Coconut & Corriander have replaced the Fresh Scallops . Lovely Lamb etc.. is still here though!

The prices are fair when you consider the cost incorporates Bread & Butter, Table cloths and Linen napkin, Electricity / gas water costs etc..... its a surprise to some (many even) that they are not more expensive!

Very pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and we hope to welcome you back again

We stayed here in August for our cricket tour, using the hotel as a base from which to venture out and play our games.

The reception was prompt and polite, and luckily my room happened to be a double, whereas most of our squad had to share twin rooms. All the rooms were well equipped with all the usual features you would expect from this style/type of room. It was quiet to sleep in, and easy to find post an evenings refreshment!

The breakfast was equally good, with service from charming young ladies, who weren't phased by our group.

The best meal we had was a 'special' steak night. It was fabulous, cooked just right, with just the right amount of accompanying 'fried' offerings, namely mushrooms, onion rings, tomatoes and chips. The peppercorn sauce topped the whole thing off. Unfortunately I was too full for desert, but they looked great too.

Highly recommend this hotel whether like us you're there as a group, or equally travelling as a couple or even on business.

Room Tip: Like me go for one of the lower rooms, at the far end of the selection, near to the rear garden.
