“Best access to the dunes and very pleasant to boot!”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

We flew in from Swakopmund over the dunes and saw this interesting set of 'cabins' nestled against the mountain as we came in for our landing. We were picked up and driven to the Lodge early enough before sunset that we could enjoy the beauty of the setting as well as the lodge itself. This was the place we saw from our small plane. The night was quiet and sleep was easy. This was to be a very early morning wakeup as we were trying to get to the top of Big Daddy dune by sunrise. So, missing breakfast we drove to the dunes, very happy that we were staying inside the park so we could travel when we wanted to, and began the hike upward. As the sun rose above the distant mountains, some folks were up there already and we were pretty close. This morning was to be one of the true highlights of our trip, hiking Big Daddy, plunge walking together down the dune into Dead Vlei, photographing Dead Vlei almost by ourselves and then, as the folks from outside the gates began to arrive, having a picnic on site. On the way back to the Lodge, we stopped at the Canyon nearby to marvel at the natural beauty of this place, so near, yet so deep in the ground. For our second night there, we could appreciate the positioning of the cabins on the raised boardwalk that allowed us to enjoy the jackals on the ground and still feel safe. In the morning, we could partake of the very nice buffet laid out for us. Even though this Lodge is in the middle of the desert, there was a power plant, diesel generators, hidden away on the other side of the mountain and obviously very quiet, as no sounds were heard in the night at all.

We had a great couple of nights in this lodge. There are 24 individual huts which radiate out from the restaurant area. Very well apportioned. We were very cold at night so remember your winter pajamas! As the lodge is the only accomodation within the national park you must stay here if you want to see the sunrise over the dunes. Do take the offer of a guide. We were the only people at sunrise and then we sent to the dead trees again, the first people there and saw them in shade and sun. Breakfast at the dunes was the icing on the cake.

Room Tip: Numbers 12 and 24 are the furthest away. You need a torch.

The rooms are very good and spacious. As most other reviewers state being able to get to dunes (very) early is a bonus. The food was very good and maybe just the presentation on the plate stopped it from being excellent. Occasional reviewers remark about the service but to be fair we found it excellent. The restaurant staff were friendly and helpful. When we said this our agent in Windhoek they seemed surprised.

On our last visit to Namibia 7 years ago, we stayed just outside the dunes and my husband was determined we would stay inside this time. It certainly is well worth it as there is no restriction on entry and exit time and we could access the dunes early in the morning and until the sun had completely set. We stayed 3 nights and were somewhat battered when we arrived having shredded a tyre on the road down to Sossusvlei. Somehow we had not booked direct with North West reservations and despite having paid in full months previously, were shown an e mail by our welcoming host that said one of our rooms should be cancelled as we had only paid a deposit. Fortunately the lodge staff had not done this, but it was another unpleasant moment. The chalets are great and so atmospheric. They all face out over the plain and the resident jackal and springbok appear around the site and at the little water hole. We self drove and also joined the early morning tour organised from the lodge and led by Sharpaka who spotted aardwolf in the darkness as we were driving towards the dunes to see sunrise. Climbing Big Daddy and then breakfast under the trees, again with a hopeful jackal, is unforgettable. Food was reasonable and after explain that a plate of vegetables does not constitute a vegetarian meal the first night, the second and third nights the chef really worked hard for me. The pool is a chilly and very necessary refresher several times during the day as April daytime temperatures were much warmer than anticipated. We also enjoyed the board walk linking all the chalets to the central area. It was lovely to walk to the end looking at the amazing starscape in the cool of the evening after dinner.

Room Tip: If you don't want to walk too far, ask for a chalet close to the central area

We chose this place because of the location - the view and access to the park. Was it worth it? Yes, on both counts. We self-drove leaving in time to be the first to climb Dune 46 (although being first made the climb more difficult) and to be up the hill in time to see the sun rise - inspiring. The room was spacious, well equipped and well serviced; with a great view. Meals were good. We had a room near the end of the board walk, so the long walk was good for our health. Shuttle bus transport was well coordinated. WiFi and cell phone access (if needed) required enquiry as to where was possible.

Room Tip: You only have the choice of a "room with a view"!

Sossus Dune Lodge, as others have said, is located in the park which means you can get into the dunes and take the first early morning photos well before anyone else (by 6am). If you are staying outside then the main gates don't even open until 6.45am, and then there's another 45-60 min drive on top of that. The chalets themselves are nice, good for viewing the sunset and are well apportioned. Nice quality shower (needed after visiting the dunes). Had dinner when I stayed and it was decent, all came very promptly and was nice enough. Strangely enough, got some nicely cooked fish (in the desert). On the negatives, the set up is slightly odd in that there is a 200-300 odd metre walk to many of the units from reception - which seems odd as they could have built them closer. You also need a shuttle service to get luggage to and from the car park (though to be fair, they were pretty fast and efficient at this). Staff were friendly, although I didn't feel they were as helpful because I was self-driving to the dunes (rather than using their tour service). I never got told about the breakfast pack - only by the shuttle driver as I left, but was too late then. Made for a hungry late morning after conquering the tallest peak -came back with wind burn, sand everywhere, and a need for a good lunch. Overall, a high quality establishment. And it is in the desert afterall.

The Sossus Dune Lodge is integrated in the Namib Naukluft National Park. The lodge consists of a main building with bar, restaurant and pool. At each side are around 10 houses built on stilts.
Each house s separate and has a fantastic view. It is very spacious and seems to be built completely from wood and bamboos.
The breakfast is okay and the dinner was excellent. Our personal highlight was the sun-rise tour at 5am which we booked at the lodge. We were the first and the only persons at Dead Vlei at 6am. The sunrise and colours were impressive. Shapaka, our guide, served our breakfast under a tree next to the Big mama dunes; an unforgettable moment.
