Initially, my wife and I had booked this 4 night break primarily in the hope of seeing the Northern Lights but, sensibly, had heeded the advice of our tour operator and had winter activities to look forward to as well.

Muotka Wilderness Lodge is an ideal base in beautiful Lapland with excellent staff and facilities. The accommodation we had was fairly basic but clean and comfortable, the best aspect being a good shower, the worst being a small sink tucked under the bathroom cabinet making teeth brushing/face washing slightly awkward. We also decided to book the smoke sauna, a traditional Finnish sauna in it's own building, which was great. I couldn't quite manage the ice hole plunge though (a quick roll in the snow was quite enough!).

The main building housed the restaurant where the food was excellent. It was cooked fresh every day and although, as expected, there was only a few options for dinner I must say I really enjoyed every single meal (the soups were especially good after a day in the cold!). There is also a bar, although drinks are expensive (in keeping with the rest of Finland).

The activities were well organised and run by friendly staff who made sure everyone got the most out of what they were doing. Most of the essential winter clothing was provided by the lodge so we just brought base layers, a fleece and hat, gloves, snood etc. In our 3 full days there we packed in a snowmobiling reindeer safari, snow shoeing, x country skiing and husky sledding, all of which were great fun - special mention
must go to Carlos, our guide, who was well informed and had a great sense of humour!

Alas, because of the cloud the aurora did not materialise while we were there but this did not detract from a fabulous holiday. Better to just think of it as a bonus if you do see it and just enjoy all that Muotka Lodge and Lapland have to offer.

It's difficult to know where to start in summarising how good the Muotkan Maja Wilderness Lodge is; I absolutely loved every minute of the time I spent here.

I travelled alone and booked the Wilderness Adventure Week which is a 6 night/7 day holiday incorporating various activities including snowmobiling, snow shoeing, skiing, husky sledging and a reindeer day. I booked direct with the owners by email which was very straightforward and simple; paid the deposit and balance by credit card over the phone. The cost of the holiday included full board, all activities and the hire of winter weather clothing and boots. I arranged my own flights to/from Ivalo via Helsinki with BA.

From the moment I arrived I was made to feel welcome and the hospitality of all the staff I encountered during my stay was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble. The room I was allocated was small but had a double bed and everything I needed; the lodge's website uses the description "cosy" for the accommodation and I would say this is accurate. There was no T.V in my room but free wifi is provided throughout the lodge.

The food is truly fantastic, home cooking in style but every meal I had was delicious. The soups were a particular highlight for me and every dish is made from scratch on the premises.

The activities were great and made very special by the eagerness of the guides. Carlos, Santtu and Noora were amazing and extremely dedicated to ensuring every guest got the most out of each activity.

Sadly the Northern lights remained allusive during my stay but I would not hesitate in returning to the Muotkan Maja Wilderness Lodge in search of them again. A simply outstanding establishment.

We just spent 4 nights/5 days at the Muotkan Maja and really enjoyed it. The service was stellar and the activities perfect for our family. We did snowmobiling, dog sledding, snow shoeing, cross-country skiing and a visit to the reindeer farm. The hotel even arranged for Santa Claus to visit during dinner on Christmas day (after he got back from delivering all the presents around the world).

The food was hearty and tasty, although I wish there were labels so I knew what I was eating.

I enjoyed the sauna so much, I wish I had one at home.

It was a wonderful vacation and my kids are asking if we can go back again next year.

If you wish to experience nature at its finest, coupled with the most hospitable staff you could ask for then take this opportunity.

My wife and I both 24 booked directly, don't bother with middle-men travel agents, give Mari or Jouko a call.

The location is breathtakingly beautiful, deep in the national park of Saariselkä, 8 miles from the Russian border and about 400m above sea level. It gets nice and cold in the winter months in Lapland! For us it was a steady -8 with no wind chill.

Wrapped up nicely in winter gear provided, we went snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, walking and of course waiting up late for the legendary Aurora Borealis in the clear nights sky which did not disappoint.

The food was great, a truly fantastic adventure we would go again in an instant!

I loved my time here at the lodge. It's not exactly luxurious, but it was cozy, simple and clean. The lodge is nestled in the middle of nowhere which is something I actually valued. The surrounding area was absolutely stunning covered in deep deep snow. I got a tad tired of everything being made of reindeer meat, but the fantastic cooking made up for it. Activities were solid to say the least, and yes I was fortunate enough to see the lights at a nearby hilltop.

We had the privilege of being one of the very earliest guests at this new accommodation from 8 – 9 February 2013, prior to our stay at its established sister accommodation, Nellim Wilderness Hotel further north from 9 – 13 February 2013 (we have also posted our review of Nellim dated 18 March 2013, please refer to the other thread on it).

Muotkan Maja is run by the same able owners of Nellim Wilderness Hotel, which means you are in very good hands as a guest! Smallish and quiet in nature, it provides a cosy stay tucked away in the snowy silence of the forest.

As we had to find accommodation somewhere for one night prior to our arrival at Nellim, Jouko offered us the option of staying at Muotkan Maja. Initially, we were rather hesitant to take this up. After all, at that point, there was little information on the accommodation online (since it is so new) and much less a review, and we had no idea what we might be buying into.

However, our “leap of faith” to trust his suggestion paid off, and our concerns were happily proved unfounded. Although it is new having started operations just a few months back, Muotkan Maja is promising. It was well-equipped, with a typically clean-cut Finnish design. We were pleasantly surprised that the accommodation looked and felt better than what we had expected, based on the few photos of it that were available online at the time.

Most importantly, we were very well taken care of by Jouko and Saana, with their welcoming and personalised service.

As Muotkan Maja is located near the fells and is also near a lovely ski resort, skiiers may find this a favourable destination. Snowshoeing, etc can also be done there and we are sure they will be able to help you, as far as possible, experience what you hope to experience!

Our main activity there was a reindeer sleigh ride (which is not available at Nellim). Though it was extremely short (as described), it was absolutely delightful. (If we ever return to Finland, we would go for a reindeer safari!) We also got an extended time of interaction over tea with a Sami lady, Satu which was most enlightening on the Sami culture.

Because of our short stay, one minor regrettable thing is that we did not get to “explore” the facilities around its compound further – we did not manage to find time to see the riverside sauna and the smoke sauna!

Speaking of saunas, you may wish to note that the sauna in the main building (where we stayed) caters to both men and women, at different timings in the evening.

Anyway, here’s a final but very important point – If you are looking for a less commercialised stay in the Kakslauttanen, Saariselka region, check out Muotkan Maja, where you are far less likely to feel like just another nameless guest. We say this with confidence and from experience, because prior to Muotkan Maja, we had stayed at one of the big-name resorts in the same region which, while nice, was overpriced with a less relationally rewarding experience.

Choose Muotkan Maja and we are sure that the hospitality of your hosts and guides will give you a most memorable experience. Give it a go!

P.S. We have also uploaded some 11 photos on this accommodation separately, do take a look. :-)
