We stayed at Hotel Lowen for three nights in july 2010. We arrived in Appenzell by train all the way from Tirano, Italy and were warmly welcommed by the staff. A big bonus was the Appenzeller-card that we received for staying in Appenzell for more than three days. We made well use of the card and tried among others the health spa in Gontenbad, the bob-rolercoaster and cooled of in the towns outside swimmingpool.
The location of the hotel is in the center of Appenzell and it is surrounded by beautiful buildings that gives the whole town a uniqe charm. The rooms are quite simple, but clean and comfortable. The breakfast was standard with some local specialities. We also had dinner one night in the hotel restaurant and the food was great.
The managers are very friendly and personal. It's a good sign when the manager remembers how you like your coffe in the morning. They also tipped us about a local swinger-festival (wrestling) which was quite an experience. He was a bit sceptical when we told him that we would walk up Santis in the soaring heat, but when we returned after having climed the mountain in three hours he was imressed :-)
We enjoyed our stay both at Lowen and in Appenzell a lot. If we returnsome day we'd like to stay again.More
