What a fantastic holiday!!! we could not fault this hotel or our holiday it was just perfect.
everybody is so helpful and friendly, they could not do enough for us.
we paid extra for a sea view which was worth it to open the curtains in the morning and just look out to sea. the food was first rate and so much variety, the staff were always cheerful and friendly.we went half board so we could experience the food away from the hotel, on the main street outside the hotel there are restaurants to suit everyones taste or walk on the newly built coastal path and take in one of the cafe's looking out to sea ("di capilla" we would recommend). We have to mention Andreas and Tassos from the othello bar, the guys went out of their way to make us welcome and made our holiday complete! and as the titles says we can't wait to go back!!

We stayed at the Sunrise beach at the beginning of may & were very disappointed with the amount of building work going on,not just next to the hotel, but on the beach, and around Protaras in general. There are building sites everywhere, all along the beach, with cranes moving, diggers & trucks delivering building materials & workmen banging from 6.30am everyday, right next to the hotel & on the beach.
At the back of the hotel, where you are supposed to be enjoying the luxury of a beachfront location, you get moved constantly because workmen are travelling up & down on JCB diggers, fencing off areas to be worked on & levelling the new pathway that is nothing more than some white shingle stones that are sharp to walk on.
The hotel in our opinion is a good 3 star, with the restaurants deserving a 4 star-no where near the platinum standard Thomson say that it is.The pool area was also good,as were the childrens entertainers.
We had a family sea view room which was ok for 4,but lacked storage space & was never cleaned properly. The bathroom was very dated, with a rusty showerscreen & sticky bath.We complained to the hotel & were sent a basket of fruit, but this by no means made up for the platinum price we had paid for a 3 star holiday. We would never return!

Dear Guest,

We are sorry to hear that your holiday at the Sunrise did not meet your high expectations. We will continue to work hard at improving the holiday experience offered to all our guests.

Regarding the building work for the construction of the pedestrian pathway, we share your disappointment about the work that was taking place during April and the management have worked tirelessly to limit the disruption even though this is a project by the local authorities. Thankfully, all heavy work relating to the pathway was completed by the end of April, and all that remains is for the placing of the wooden decking once it arrives.

We booked a platinum hotel in a beach front location. This hotel is excellent, however for platinum our expectations were slightly higher. The restaurants and food were outstanding. Bar is expensive, especially for us as a party of 5.

The rooms were nice, not outstanding, but clean. The building work around the hotel was significant, and disturbing. In addition to building work on the beach which we strongly feel we should have been informed of. The hotel continue to tell guests it was the municipal however they had planned the work for last year and delayed it, so hotels were aware of it. They should have reduced prices to reflect a significant part of the offer was missing. Beach front location with no or limited access to beach, for me my children having to move three times during boules on the beach with hotel entertainment staff for diggers and JCB to pass is not acceptable. Very disappointing. The hotel could have offered guests free full board as compensation or upgrade of rooms.

For guests looking to travel in April next year they should be aware the main resort is closed, it doesnt really open until May. The pool water is freezing.

Had a disappointing holiday at a platinum price, not quite the beach holiday of a lifetime

Dear Guest,

We are sorry to hear that your holiday here was disrupted during the time that work was undertaken on the beach pathway in April. All the construction has been completed since the end of April and the beach is now fully accessible in front of the Hotel.
Any other building work currently taking place close to the Hotel is light so as not to disrupt guests in residence and will be completed by the end of May. We do hope that your recent experiences will not deter you from choosing the Sunrise Beach Hotel for your next holiday in Cyprus.

We stayed at the Sunrise Beach Hotel from 18th April for 1 week. It was excellent value for money because we booked direct with the hotel and they had an offer of stay B&B and get half board free! I doubt whether Thomson's offered this savings to their customers?
We arrive late due to a 5hr delay on flight, but because of this the hotel offered us full board on the first day of our holiday which i though was fantastic considering the delay was through no fault of the hotel.
The hotel itself is lovely, with a prime position on the beach and the reason we chose to stay here was due to the reviews on Trip Advisor rating this as Protaras top hotel.... But i personaly feel that the hotel are using this to theirnadvantage and are not making the effort that you would expect a top rated hotel to do.
We had a fabulous family suite which overlooked the pool and beach (room 340) and was ample size for the 4 of us. The cleanliness left alot to be desired though. The floors were not cleaned, probably only twice during our stay and the bathroom smelt, simply because i think it was not cleaned properly. One day the cleaners came into the room when we were in there and all they did was make the beds! That to me is not cleaning the room!
The food in the restaurants was lovely, with different themes every night of our stay. However would recommend that they look at offering more variety of desserts as it was either apples and kiwi fruits or a cake type desssert. The restaurant manager was extremely friendly and offered us a free bottle of wine on one night of our stay.
The evening entertainment left alot to be desired, but maybe this was because we were there early season? There was the typical kids disco at 9pm which did the same songs every night and then really your only option was to venture up the strip because the entertainment after the disco was diabolical.
Protaras beach is beautiful and the strip is perfect for your nights out to find a bar to finish off your day. I would recommend Cheers bar for excellent value for money on drinks and food (you get loads) and The Love Boat bar for the entertainment or . Both venues had 'tribute' acts which were very good and got the crowd joining in and were good value for money on drinks... Well as far as prices go in holiday resorts nowadays!
A trip to Ayia Napa by bus costs €2 return per person (excellent value) takes about 30 mins and runs very frequently. The bus stop is right outside the hotel.
All in all our holiday was not as perfect as we thought it might be? Whether thats because we went slightly out of season and didn't have fantastic weather (heatwave going on in UK at the time grrrrr....). However i feel the hotel didnt live up to my expectations of believing that it would be out of this world.
So if i was to recommend anything to you it would be to not expect first rate/first class and you probably wont be diasppointed and will find yourself having a fabulous time!

We came to get married at the sunrise beach and brought 33 of our close family and friends with us.

My wife to be and I arrived a few days ahead of the group to make the necessary arrangements and were meeted by extremely friiendly reception staff and a most welcome fresh orange on our arrival. Unfortunately our grfeat first impression was short lived as we opened the curtains of our sea-view room to see JCB diggers and wire mesh fencing runnnig the length of the beach outside the hotel. This, however, turned out to be as a result of work carried out by the municipality (local council) who were laying a new footpath along the length of the resort and nothing at all to do with the hotel. (Thankfully, the beach was returned to it's former glory after only a couple of days and before our wedding guests arrived.)

Our sea view room was was clean and spacious and (without the diggers!) provided an incredible panoramic view of the sea and beach from the large sliding glass doors which ran from one end of the room to the other. The day before our wedding we were upgraded to a jacuzzi suite for the remaining 11 days of our stay. It was a fantastic room with two balconies and a beautiful view of the sea, really quite special.

The beach outside the hotel is beautiful and only 5 feet away from the hotel pool.It actually looks as though it belongs in a caribbean brochure as the water is so crystal clear and with a shallow shelf that allows you to see the sea floor for quite some distance out from the shore - perfect for swimming and snorkelling etc. Whilst my new wife and I have yet to visit the caribbean, it is by farthe nicest beach we've seen in the mediterranean.

The resort has a number of bars and restaurants, all serving food and drink at reasonable prices. While we didn't manage to eat at all of the restaurants we liked the look of, those we did visit served a great selection of food and we were not once disappointed by the quality.

The hotel itself is very modern and absolutely spotless throughout. The hotel has a couple of bars, one with a cool, sophisticated feel to it and the other (the reef bar) with more of a traditional pub feel (a few tv screens for sports, pool table etc). There is a great gym with all the resistance equipment you could ask for and some hi-tec cardio machines (thought perhaps it could use one or two more of these during busier times).

The food at the hotel is simply fantastic, with and anything you could wish for at breakfast (cooked, continental, fruits, yoghurts, waffles, pancakes) and a huge range of dishes to choose from in both starter, main course and dessert options at the evening meal.. The restaurant runs a theme each evening (greek, carvery, Italian and such like) which ensures that you have several new dishes to rey each evening whilst still providing some regular favourites to suit all tastes. As buffet style restaurants go it's the best my partner and I have seen and any of our 33 strong guests that we've spoken to about it agreed.

The staff - this is where the hotel really excels. It is by far the friendliest and most well-run hotel my wife and I have ever stayed in and I know that many of our guests felt the same way. Every member of staff, and between us we encountered most/all of them during our 17-day stay, were friendly, helpful and cheerful without exception and not in a false or trained-to-be-polite kind of way. Instead their efforts were entirley genuine and from cleaners to maitre d' they all seemed really happy in their work and enjoyed having a laugh with the guests. Even the "grumpy" pool guy mentioned in some of the reviews here was not to be found!
As a result, we all felt extremely welcome and at home at the hotel. In fact, we met a couple who were staying at the hotel for the 3rd year running who explained that the staff had barely changed from year to year, which says a lot about how much they enjoy their work given that the hotels often have a fairly transient workforce.

particular there are a few staff we would like to mention -
Denise, the hotel wedding co-ordinator and PR manager is nothing short of a legend. To say that we'd had a few hurdles to overcome whilst organising our wedding would be an understatement, our original airline going bust being the worst, but from the minute we met Denise her calm and friendly manner put us entirely at ease with her calm and friendly manner and made us feel completely confident that our day would be really special. Even in the lead up to our arrival she was always extremely helpful and prompt when replying to our emails. If you're thinking of getting married in Cyprus then you would do well choosing the Sunrise Beach if only to have her on board.

Justine - in the Othello bar - it was a pleasure chatting to her each day and she couldn't do enough to help wherever possible

Elina in the othello bar - always friendly and smiling away.

Angela the reservations manager and all of the reception staff - all extremely friendly and helpful, going the extra mile to ensure we had a pleasant stay.

Peter and George the hotel porters, always smiling and asking about your stay whenever you pass by at reception.

All of the cleaners - they meet you with a friendly smile and a hello whenever you bump into them.

Neo, the maitre d' - Neo's banter kept us entertained at mealtimes throughout our stay. It's quite impressive that he manages to run the restaurant so smoothly and yet still find time to chat and amuse the guests. However, he did fail on his promise to find my wife's grandmother a rich young cypriot man to marry.

The barman in Reef bar - we only saw him a few times during our stay but he was always friendly and chatty whenever we did.

All of the remaing staff at othello bar and in the restaurant - there are too many to mention and we couldn't recall all of their names but as mentioned above, there wasn't one member of staff that didn't impress us at some point.

The animation team - we only had a couple of infants with us but their endless enthusiasm impressed.

The bad points -

There are only a handful to mention and they mostly relate to value for money-
The hotel charges 4 euros 40 cents for a 1litre bottle of still water which is in my view simply extortionate and makes you feel a little exploited when you order 4/5 bottlers for the table at dinner, given that they know you can't really take your own in with you. At less than 60 cents for 2l bottles on the strip you're going to want to stock up in your room. As regards alochol, drinks are quite expensive but not crazily so. I think the hotel has missed a trick here as if they charged slightly less for alcohol I'm sure people would spend more time time drinking there rather than heading for the strip where drinks are very cheap.
The hotel also charges 8euro 50 cents to use the steam room and jacuzzi near the indoor swimming pool, which again I find a bit greedy since these facilities are usually free along with the rest of a hotel's fitness/leisure facilities.
As regards weddings, the hotel does not allow you to use any DJ other than their own and I felt that 500 euros for 3 hours was very unfair, again perhaps expoliting the fact that with no other option you're gonna have to pay it if you want some DJ entertainment at your reception. I know that the hotel makes a tidy profit on this and is again evidence of the owners being a bit too greedy.
As for the cost of the wedding venue, the hotel charged 400 euros for the use of the sea view terrace that we used for our ceremony and meal. Many other hotels would provide the venue for free provided you have eg 10 or more guests staying at the hotel. We had 28 guests staying for a minimum of a week.
To hire squash and tennis equipment cost 8euro 50 cents a time which again is pretty expensive.
There was building work going on at either side of the hotel which I felt we should have been informed about long before our stay. Whilst the work mentioned above be the municipality on the beach footpath was nothing to do with the hotel, the owners of the hotel are currently building a 5 star sister hotel right next to it. The work on this site woke us up very early for the first week of our stay and the sound of angle grinders at 7am did detract from the realaxing holiday feel of the place. I know we were staying at the hotel prior to the start of the busy season but I don't think that is any reason to expect the hotel to be anything other than what you see in the brochure and online, unless you are told otherwise and given a chance to move elsewhere.

Conclusion -

This hotel is simply fantastic. It is a shame that the owners seek to charge so much in some areas as it does grate a little when you feel they are taking advantage here and there, but they are very fortunate to have an incredible staff who more than make up for it. I know we have mentioned just about all of them to some extent but they really are that good and are the reason staying here is such a great experience.
As for the building works, I think a little more information for would-be guests is in order and you should check the state of play before booking. Otherwise, it's just a beautiful location.

We came to the hotel having had various problems with our wedding plans (nothing to do with Denise!) and we were immediately annoyed by the state of the beach. As we all know when somethng like that puts you in a bad mood at a hotel you start to notice other little problems that otherwise would probably not have bothered you, so the fact that we found everythign else to be perfect says it all really.
If you're looking for a great beach holiday or a wedding destination in cyprus then look no further, just remember to bring a few extra euros!

The Sunrise Beach hotel in Protaras is a wonderful hotel. I cannot find any faults at all, the hotel was fab, the staff and service was brilliant, the food was exceptional and it is wonderfully situated on the beach. Everything was spotless, their attention to detail was fantastic and the whole holiday was brilliant, we don't usually go back to the same place twice, but we are already planning a repeat holiday for next year. The staff there absolutely made our holiday so enjoyable. Thanks again. Linda and Wayne

We stayed at the hotel from the 10th April 2011 for one week and had absolutely no problem with the hotel, however Thomson must have know about the building works that were going on as you could not possibly miss them.
The beach was closed with heavy machinery starting up at 0730hrs onwards this continued all week. The hotel is being extended and due to go on until May 2012 with part of the ground hoarded off adjacent to the pool so no relaxing by the pool as well as work at the front of the hotel with concrete being pumped whilst we were there.
Don't get me wrong the hotel is lovely, the food is good and the staff really friendly. The work is not their fault so our gripe is with Thomson for not letting us know so that we could have made an informed chioce as to where we stayed. Not much point having a beach front hotel if you cannot use it.
Our answeres are therefore specific to the hotel and not its surroundings
