My husband, 18-year-old daughter and I have just returned from a week at the Sunrise Beach Hotel 29/6 – 6/7/14. We arrived at approx. 0200 hrs. having travelled all day. There was no ‘welcome’ drink awaiting us on arrival, which was surprising having read previous reviews.
We booked our holiday through Thomson and paid extra for the privilege of a full sea view room, so imagine our disappointment when we were informed upon check in, that our room would not be ready until the next day. We were told the correct room would be allocated at 1200 noon the following day. As did not want to ‘kick up a fuss’ we took the keys to the allocated room.
The room was at the rear of the hotel, noisy, hot (air con not working) with no sea view, to say we were a little disappointed at this stage, was an understatement.
However when we went to collect keys from reception we were told room would not be ready until at least 13.00, with clothes creasing in the suitcase we were advised to hang clothes in wardrobe and porter would move to correct room when it was ready. Later back in reception to collect new keys an argument commenced between porter and reception regarding taking clothes to our new room. All in all not a great start to holiday!
Our new room was far better than the original with an amazing panoramic view of beach – the only problem being we had no bed for teenage daughter and so we had to wait for a makeshift bed to arrive and not a proper bed as described by Thomson.
Almost a half-day wasted trying to sort out room, not what you would expect from a 5 star hotel!
The hotel itself has positive points, great location as near all amenities shops/bars. Staff friendly be it at the pool/bars/restaurants – would especially like to thank Neo who kept things running smoothly in the restaurant areas, a true gentleman always pleasant and friendly.
Negative – the hotel is looking a bit tired in areas, the first room we were allocated was in need of a refurb as looking rather dated, lift area had masking tape on marble – again not what you would expect from a 5 star hotel, lift action very slow and always full. Last year we stayed in a four star hotel in Mallorca and the rooms were much more stylish/modern.
I personally like pouring my own wine, as I am not a big drinker and so like to know what I am drinking and yet despite our protest each evening, the waiters insisted on pouring wine for us. The same applied to dirty dishes; these were removed even before you finished the last mouthful of food – which made a relaxing experience, not so relaxing.
Allocation of sunbeds – pros/cons …. At least you know you have a bed without the usual early morning rush, daughter didn’t like the fact we were sat in the same place day in and day out … it got boring!
Also there is very little space in-between sunbeds and it felt cramped and intrusive on occasions.
I would recommend a trip on the Dolphin Submarine boat – only ∈10 each and well worth the money – had a great time swimming in the blue lagoon.
Also went into Ayia Napa on the bus ∈4.50 each way for all of us, certainly worth a look!
All in all had an enjoyable time, but fair to say the room mix up spoilt what should have been an excellent holiday.
The couple booking in before us also had a similar issue with rooms – it later transpired there had been double bookings for this week, which lead to confusion/upset.
Nice hotel, but in my opinion not a 5 star.
