Myself and my partner stayed here from 18th July - 25th July 2012, half board, inland view room (we could see the sea on the right of us) booked through Thomas Cook.
Upon arrival (22:45) we were welcomed and given our room key (room 118) plus a voucher for lunch the next day, as we had missed dinner. This wasn’t expected and we were grateful. When we got to our room I was initially happy and delighted with the décor etc. until I noticed a few scrapes and imperfections on the walls & curtains. The furniture was stiff and in need of some grease! Nothing was enough to disgust me. They supply you with slippers and toiletries which I suppose helps get the 5* rating. I stay in mostly 5* business hotels so wasn’t sure what to expect from a holiday hotel. Unfortunately the 5* rating doesn’t reflect a free safe!! They charge €2.50 per day for use of that feature plus €2 per day for the fridge (if you want it stocked). I was pleased overall and had no real complaints throughout the holiday. On one occasion we had a big bug in our room, but to be honest it was actually really funny trying to get it out and we had a real giggle about it. Off course I wanted to call reception to come and sort it but my partner agreed to do it himself. The staff there seemed friendly and happy to help. One guy helped us with our bags and chatted to us every day when we saw him which was a nice familiarity.
The pool area was very nice and during the week beds were readily available even when we came down late around 2pm. Weekends are not as good as available beds seem nonexistent. It took us about an hour to wait for a bed to free up. Now I know there were quite a few locals but I believed they were either staying at the hotel or at the nearby apartments, all part of Tsokkos. Greeks and Cypriots holiday too!!
The beach in front of the hotel was beautiful, clear water and plenty of room for your own towels and umbrellas. The showers and taps were in good working order too. I didn’t actually rent a bed for the day so unsure how much they charged. They also have a few booths along that parade for boat trips and activities.
The food at this hotel was very good. I must admit it is the best food I have had from a holiday hotel in Europe. The lunch seemed better than dinner because there seemed to be a lot more choice. We had dinner on two occasions and it was adequate and tasty, but I preferred the lunches. We tend to stay at the pool and have lunch and then venture out in the evening for dinner. As a half board booking you get breakfast and dinner, however should you wish to swap dinner for lunch all you need to do is get a voucher from reception and hand it to your wait staff. In our welcome paper work it didn’t state this, but said something along the lines of ‘be sure to tell your waiter’ so we were a little embarrassed when we sat to eat lunch on our second day and expected to produce a voucher. I then had to go to reception and get one mid way through my meal!
The pool bar offered a range of snacks and drinks and the drinks were of a reasonable price. I was flabbergasted when I was asked to pay €8 for two small ice creams!!! But we did and learnt our lesson!
The entertainment here was good. There was a team of 5 and they weren’t the usual pester pester reps. They asked once and didn’t ask again! They announced the games over the speaker a few times and left it at that. They did the usual aqua aerobics, water polo, table tennis and darts throughout the day as well as the evening entertainment which ended at 22:30 every night! The hotel next door (Odessa) had their entertainment till the early hours. So if you want a lively evening I would pop over there or hit the bars on the main strip which was a 3 minute walk up a small ramp. Some nice traditional restaurants there too as well as a Pizza Hut, McDonald’s and Costa. And of course the place was filled with little supermarkets and themed bars. The places we tended to visit most often were Costa and Rossos Bakery.
Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel to others wanting a relaxing peaceful time with the option to go out and party. I can officially say it’s one of the best holiday hotel I have stayed in so far. The Miramare Beach Hotel, Corfu (stayed June 2011) was the best due to its bungalow and beach 5 steps from our room!
