“A QUIET HOLIDAY FOR A CHANGE”
Reviewed 9 November 2012

My wife and I, sick of the wet and miserable summer decided at the last moment to book a seven night package somewhere there was a chance of some sun, heat and sea bathing. Our Thomas Cook's rep advised Cyprus and this hotel in Protaras (on east coast of Cyprus not far from Fig Tree Bay). By sheer coincidence we had stayed at this hotel for a longer holiday about six years ago and had enjoyed it. Our holidays usually entail long distance flights, car hire, finding hotels and driving up to 1500 miles in three/four weeks so this was a lot more restful. Our flights were excellent - both departed and arrived early with good service on both. The hotel was as we remembered it - magnificent entrance in the neo-classical style and an enormous reception area in a five storey atrium. We had asked for and received a sea facing room on the 1st floor - slightly more expensive but worth it as we were on the balcony bathed in the morning sun at 0630hrs every morning. (We had been on a side sea view room on our last visit and suffered from a nearby disco every night to the wee small hours). The reception was snowed under by the arrival of over 40 guests but soon got us our pass keys and directions to our room. This was large, spotlesly clean, nicely furnished with a complete bathroom that included a full length bath with shower over. The bed would have held four (if we had been that way inclined) and was uber comfortable. At this stage, I have to say the staff in this hotel are excellent and always ready to assist. Now for the food. This is buffet style and the breakfast was excellent in range and quantity - one small complaint is that I always take Tabasco sauce with scrambled eggs but the dining room staff had never heard of it. We were on half-board and had a snack at a near-by coffee house at lunch time but in the evening in the main dining room from an extensive buffet. The range and quality of the food was fine and both of us always found something tasty and to our liking but we only took two courses avoiding soup and sweet for weight reasons. We had seen comments in Trip Adviser about the poor quality of the food and the fact that a four-and-half star hotel should provide better quality and range. Firstly, the stars have nothing to do with the quality of the food and secondly, we dine out at home in a local 4* hotel that charges £40-£45 for first class lunch and dinner buffets so taking the cost of the holiday into consideration I think the Constantinos offers good value for money. One minor complaint - at dinner time someone at dining room reception checks room number and they accompanies you to a table. If the person taking you to your seat is a waiter he will take the drinks order; if it is one of the waitresses there is a problem catching the eye of a wine waiter - sometimes almost ten minutes. On the waitresses, a plea to the hotel management to please provide longer skirts. Short skirts in the evening may be acceptable but definitely not at 0700hrs.
A quiet holiday? We were in Protaras from 31 October to 7 November and about three-quarters of the shops, bars, hotel etc had closed at the end of their summer season. This suited us fine but younger couples and families would find it difficult to keep amused in the evenings. However, our weather was perfect 28-30C degrees every day but it got dark about 1600hrs. The sea was warmer than the swimming pool and there is an exellent boardwalk that goes for miles in both directions from the beach side of the hotel. No problems with sunbed grabbers and the pool was never crowded. Finally, we both enjoyed a really good value break in the sun.

Room Tip: While the discos nearby had closed I would still recommend sea facing rooms to be assured of a good...

Just returned from a good week in Protoras. Hotel very pleased with, although one or two points to note.

If possible, request a pool view room if you like the morning sun. Full sea view rooms are in the shade most of the day. Rooms facing away from the pool are in afternoon only sun.

Th weather has been 27f glorious. the othe 1/2 star rating the hotel has to make it 5* is for the location. Right on the beach.

The rooms are set off an open antrium, and although I requested a quiet room, the evening entertainment can be heard. There are 2 lifts, quite slow, so don't hurry yourself. Dress code for gentlemen for dinner (long trousers) was good, but all fod was buffet style. No waiter service, even though the hotel dining room is on a different floor than the breakfast room.

By the 7th November, the resort was almost completely closed. After this date I would suggest an All Inclusive option at the hotel, as there are few eating places open, unless you have a car.

The room on the second floor was very good although the hairdryer is suitable fr a man, not a female especially with long hair, so I woulod suggest you take your own girls. All the plugs are three pin so no adaptor necessary.

We hired a car, a lot cheaper after the 1st November - winter rates for 2 days.

Plenty of sunloungers for guests, although I would imagine in high season it would be very busy.

Good Hotel worthy of 4*+ rating but not quite 5* compared with other hotels in Europe.

Room Tip: Go for a pool view room if you like the morning sun

Party included myself age 75, my daughter age 47 and two grandsons, 12 and 15.
Billed by Thomas Cook as 4* but by hotel as 5*. We have to realise that there is a difference in grading in other countries. We felt that 4* would be fair.
Good points - Wonderful food, so much choice and well presented. Most of Restaurant staff very efficient.Think anyone who complains about the food must be used to a life of extreme luxury! Lovely room with side sea view - I loved to sit on the balcony at night. Bed very comfy, bathroom perfect with complimentary toiletries. Towels changed daily. Our rooms were on 3rd floor and I believe these have been renovated but lower floors maybe have not. Rooms kept perfectly clean each day. All public areas comfortable and clean. Loved the beachside location, alternating between pool and beach was great. Also, very pleasant walks along the front in both directions. My grandsons enjoyed the tennis, table tennis (charged) and also the activities organised by the staff such as darts (free).

Not so good points - We paid for All inclusive and wonder if it was worth the extra cost. Charges were made for safe deposit box and fridge - was surprised at this in a 5*? hotel. The fitness suite was excellent but, again, although AI guests, we still had to pay for most of the things available. Ice creams - we could only have rather cheap choc ices and had to pay for anything decent. Likewise with drinks. We appreciated that we were entitled only to local drinks but many of the soft drinks were certainly watered down. The staff at the beach bar were very nice but can't say the same for the food - children had beefburgers but couldn't eat them. It appeared that bottled water was a no - only what appeared to be tap water available on AI. Having said all this, the drinks were quite expensive to buy, so difficult to work out whether All Inclusive was a good deal or not. Hotel ran out of milk to supply the rooms for our last four days. This had to be collected at the bar by the glass.
We booked the tennis court for an hour from 5pm and requested that the floodlights be switched on - at the end of October it was dark at that time. We were asked to pay an additional 5euros for this, to which we objected. After some discussion we were not charged.

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel but, as All Inclusive guests, we felt rather let down.

As to entertainment, rather disappointing and not very well attended. I think hotel could put on at least one "big" show a week - dancers or a group maybe. We had bingo and quizzes (which are run by the hotel but only succeed if guests participate) light music, and a magician who was very good. I agree with Loobyloo24 that use of the outside area in the evening would be nice. Once the sunbeds (plenty of them) and the pool were finished at the end of day, this area was unused. If the lighting could be left on I am sure people would use this area to sit with a drink and relax in the evening in very pleasant surroundings.

The staff on the whole were excellent although one receptionist seemed unwilling to be friendly and helpful.

I would certainly recommend Constantine the Great but would like to see a few "rough edges" ironed out.

Room Tip: From our rooms on 3rd floor (318 & 320) we had nice side views of the sea but not much sun. The...

Returned two weeks ago after our 15th visit to The Constantinos. We love this Hotel and will be returning again next year. The entire staff are so friendly and helpful, from the receptionists, Bar staff, Restaurant staff, Cleaners, we could not fault them at all. The rooms are lovely with the most comfortable of beds, our cleaner Nikki was exceptional, with clean bedding and towels every day.
Andreas, Anna,Elias and all the girls on reception are so helpful, nothing is too much trouble.

I agree with the previous review, some holiday makers are very rude to the staff, not even bothering to say please and thank you.

The entertainment team are lovely, but during the summer they should be given an outside area near the pool, this used to happen a few years ago and attracted more people to sit outside, watch the entertainment and use the outside bar.

I don't agree with making the Hotel Adults only as we have taken our family including grandsons four times and they loved it, and although we are 70 years young!! , we love joining in with French Boules, Water aerobics etc. and 'shake it up,shake it up' has definately been the hotel's theme tune since this entertainment team has been there.

Food is always good and the Staff in all the restaurants work so hard. Too many to name individually, but a special mention for Petros in the Dining Room.

We will be back in May next year and again in October, as will many other return visitors.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the Pool area have lovely views.

Myself and a friend went to Constantinos the Great at the start of October. We went with Thomas Cook…who put this hotel up as a 4 star and NOT a 5 star. This is a good thing because although the hotel and all its staff say its 5 star, its not. I think anyone going here expecting 5 star WILL be disappointed…but 4 star Is about right.

Location – Spot on…right on the beach and just a little way down from the main shops and bars. Yes there was a little noise from the strip but nothing major. One major plus point that we loved was eating our breakfast outside with a lovely sea view. Just beautiful. = 5 star

Hotel – Very grand but old fashioned . Good points – Everywhere was comfortable, beds, furniture in reception, bar and dining area all very comfy. I think the only thing that really disappointed me was that there was no outside bar/seating area at night. All the evening entertainment was on the bottom floor and it felt very disjointed as the main bar was on the reception floor…one floor up. Evening entertainment consisted of a mini disco for the few kids that were there, quiz, magic show and a pianist one night…pretty sad and tired. I think they really need to sort out putting it all outside by the pool as I feel this would attract more people in one space and therefore get them a better audience. = 4 star

Staff – We found them all to be very pleasant, maids were in every day to do the rooms, reception staff were very helpful and the chefs and waiters were all lovely. Cant remember names but the little lad that looks about 12 (although im sure he was a little older) was fantastic, always smiling and making conversation, as was the waitress with red hair…we wish we had remembered their names..they should be commended. The entertainment staff in the day were hilarious….everymorning is Water aerobics…and the two lads that take alternate days to do it are fantastic…The hotel song “Shake it up shake it up” will be ringing in your ears until the day you leave…its great fun to watch the guys putting their own spin on it…their enthusiasm is great fun to watch and they are not pushy like ive known other reps to be in past years…if you don’t want to join in they don’t pester you. Plenty of other activities, French bowls, water polo, darts etc. = 5 star

Pool area – Lovely pool, shelves in one side so great for people with disabilities, plenty big enough and plenty of sunbeds. Yes there were a few tiles missing and etchings of graffiti under the bridge as you swim under it in the pool but nothing major.. it all just needs a bit of a touch up = 4 star

Food – Lovely, great selection of hot main dishes and lots of salads and a meat counter where the chef carves a different fresh cooked joint each evening. Only one option for kids (chips and nuggets) but there was always chicken and potatoes etc that kids could eat from the adult main dishes…and to be honest I think this hotel might want to look at becoming adults only. I’d say the hotel was 70% older couples, 20% middle aged couples and 10% families. Breakfast was lovely, great choice of full cooked breakfast, cakes and pastries, fruit and yoghurts and also freshly made omelettes and crepes. Yummy = 5 star.

Rooms –Rooms were very comfortable, beds and pillows were heavenly. Downsides to the rooms, they are very old fashioned and need sprucing up a bit. Yes there was a little tear in the wall paper, extractor fan not working in the bathroom, wardrobe was pretty basic and there few little tiles missing in the bathroom but these little points didn’t matter to us the beds were comfy and I think that’s the most important thing. Maids came daily and mopped the floor and made the beds. Be aware that if you book a side sea view you could end up being over the carpark like we were. We asked if we could be changed to a room overlooking the pool or more of the sea but the hotel was fully booked. The girls on reception told us with a smile we were lucky to be in a room as it was, as the hotel was very overbooked and we witnessed this later whilst sitting on our balcony. People arriving all smiles dragging their cases in..then 5 minutes later walking back out again not happy. Most were being taken next door to the Vrisianna Hotel. We went for a nose around the Vrisianna later in the week and it seemed very nice, smaller pool but much more modern. Most people getting moved on had booked with other companies over the internet and didn’t have reps…but there WAS a few unlucky Thomas Cook people that we bumped into who had been moved for the first few days but then were upgraded when they finally got their rooms. There is not many front sea view rooms….but having seen how lovely the view is I think I would consider paying extra for one if I was to stay again.

Overall we had a very pleasant and comfortable stay, I think If we had been expecting 5 star we would have been disappointed, and hence there was a lot of guests walking around wth sour faces who I can only guess were told by their travel companies that it WAS a 5 star. Its Not…but we really liked it and would defiantly go back again. Mr Tsokkos just needs to spruce it all up a bit, give it a refurb and sort out the entertainment area and it would be fab.

from arrival to departure all aspects of the holiday lived up to expectations. Even the weather was exceptional. We were slightly nervous after reading some very negative reviews prior to departure but after our weeks holiday where staff were friendly the hotel was spotless and the variety and choice of food was enough to meet the needs of any visitor. I can only conclude that some of the reviews were from very negative people
We would certainly return

We visited the Constantinos last year and decided to go back again having had the most wonderful time there, this year was exactly the same from entering the hotel and being met by the most friendliest reception desk people we were given rooms overlooking the pool and spent every morning watching the amazing sunrises. everybody in the hotel from the receptionist, waiters, waitresses to the maids who did our room we found them to be some of the friendliest people they could not do enough.

The food was lovely and the meat was cooked to perfection, the dinning room has been done up since last year to a vast improvement.

The bathrooms have also had a make over which makes them look really nice, our rooms were cleaned every day with fresh towels for us.

The entire holiday we had no cause what so ever to complain about anything but on hearing how some holiday makers were speaking to the staff i did cringe, as sometimes the holiday makers could not even manage a please and thankyou to them.

Thank you Constatinos for making our holiday complete, if you have read the reviews and feel put off by them please, please don't, go see for yourselves. Remember when a review is written and chances are it will not be a good one you are only getting one side of the story unfortunately, we used to stay at the Vrissianna next door and did so for 7 years now we stay here which we love and will be back next.year.
Thank you to all the staff
