We have stayed at the Rising Star (and also the sister Golden Star one year) on 4 or 5 separate occasions, as have members of my immediate family, and there was always a large proportion of guests from the UK & Ireland who were returning clientele although last year the property only became available via Thomas Cook just before the main Summer season started and seemed to be a last minute agreement as the owners had contracted with a european tour operator resulting in a large number of Russian and Scandinavian guests and while this did not cause us any direct problems per se, the whole atmosphere and feel about the place was different.
The staff were still generally the same very pleasant and efficient bunch whom we had met on previous holidays and helped to make our stays very enjoyable but even they were aware of the changing set up at the apartments and within Protaras as a whole.
This year the hotel has disappointingly and I believe foolishly opted to deal exclusively with the Russian and Scandinavian market, presumably because they are offering a better deal than the UK operators. However what they need to realise is that this perceived 'gain' is likely to be short lived as we have seen first hand that guests from those other countries do not spend at the hotel or local bars and restaurants the way that the UK tourists generally do and they also have no loyalty to a place and will soon move on to somewhere else.....and what will those hotels who have put all their eggs in the one basket do then....sidle back up to the Brits ?
The British tourists have been the mainstay of the Cypriot tourist industry from it's infancy....my own and extended family have been holidaying in Cyprus since the mid eighties, when very few people had heard of it as a tourist destination, and at that time we frequented Limassol (although stayed in Pernera in '88) and only migrated to Protaras after the Russians took over Limassol and ruined it.
On speaking to a few of the restaurant owners whose establishments we frequented last year they have grave concerns that Protaras is heading down the same slippery slope, from which it may never recover, and the decision by the Yianna Marie group who own the Rising and Golden Stars and others like them to turn their back on the UK market and also push 'all inclusive' exclusively is only likely to exacerbate this decline........perhaps they have conveniently overlooked the not insignificant part that foreign money deposits from certain countries played in the Cypriot banking crisis........and where has all that money gone....moved elsewhere....like the tourists from those countries will when they are fed up with it !!
The Greek Cypriots frequently say to the Brits not to opt for holidaying in the Turkish occupied northern sector as it will be the demise of tourism in the south yet they now want to start dealing exclusively with the Russians and Scandinavians for a quick extra euro.
This in not intended to be a rant but I'm annoyed and saddened that like many other UK tourists who have developed and sustained the Cypriot tourist economy for close on 30 years we are now becoming persona non grata in certain respects........but just remind you of the title of this review.
