We have stayed at the Rising Star (and also the sister Golden Star one year) on 4 or 5 separate occasions, as have members of my immediate family, and there was always a large proportion of guests from the UK & Ireland who were returning clientele although last year the property only became available via Thomas Cook just before the main Summer season started and seemed to be a last minute agreement as the owners had contracted with a european tour operator resulting in a large number of Russian and Scandinavian guests and while this did not cause us any direct problems per se, the whole atmosphere and feel about the place was different.

The staff were still generally the same very pleasant and efficient bunch whom we had met on previous holidays and helped to make our stays very enjoyable but even they were aware of the changing set up at the apartments and within Protaras as a whole.

This year the hotel has disappointingly and I believe foolishly opted to deal exclusively with the Russian and Scandinavian market, presumably because they are offering a better deal than the UK operators. However what they need to realise is that this perceived 'gain' is likely to be short lived as we have seen first hand that guests from those other countries do not spend at the hotel or local bars and restaurants the way that the UK tourists generally do and they also have no loyalty to a place and will soon move on to somewhere else.....and what will those hotels who have put all their eggs in the one basket do then....sidle back up to the Brits ?

The British tourists have been the mainstay of the Cypriot tourist industry from it's infancy....my own and extended family have been holidaying in Cyprus since the mid eighties, when very few people had heard of it as a tourist destination, and at that time we frequented Limassol (although stayed in Pernera in '88) and only migrated to Protaras after the Russians took over Limassol and ruined it.

On speaking to a few of the restaurant owners whose establishments we frequented last year they have grave concerns that Protaras is heading down the same slippery slope, from which it may never recover, and the decision by the Yianna Marie group who own the Rising and Golden Stars and others like them to turn their back on the UK market and also push 'all inclusive' exclusively is only likely to exacerbate this decline........perhaps they have conveniently overlooked the not insignificant part that foreign money deposits from certain countries played in the Cypriot banking crisis........and where has all that money gone....moved elsewhere....like the tourists from those countries will when they are fed up with it !!

The Greek Cypriots frequently say to the Brits not to opt for holidaying in the Turkish occupied northern sector as it will be the demise of tourism in the south yet they now want to start dealing exclusively with the Russians and Scandinavians for a quick extra euro.

This in not intended to be a rant but I'm annoyed and saddened that like many other UK tourists who have developed and sustained the Cypriot tourist economy for close on 30 years we are now becoming persona non grata in certain respects........but just remind you of the title of this review.

Room Tip: Pretend to be Russian or Scandinavian !

Me and my family stayed here August 2012 and had a very enjoyable stay. The location is ideal and in a quiet location. Enjoyed it so much wanted to go back this year. Emailed the hotel to find they are now with an European tour operator and bookings can no longer be made from UK or direct with hotel .. Very disappointed ... Probably gone to a Russian tour operator as lots of Russians and scandanavians there during our stay !

Came here with the wife for a couple of weeks. Coach stopped at the front of the hotel and on first impressions it looked good. We were checked in quickly and found our room to be very clean typical holiday style. Nice treat because it is near enough right on the beach, it was still busy as the weather was still hot. You can book boat trips right outside the hotel as the hotel is very close to the pick-up jetty. If you fancy water sports they are on the beach too. No complaints with the food at the hotel we also ate a few times in the town a short walk away. Nice bustling town not full of rowdy teenagers, quiet nice place to escape to.

Slightly dated but good hotel. Suited us as it was overlooking the beach and was an easy stroll each morning. We particularly enjoyed having breakfast overlooking the sea on the patio every day. We would choosethis hotel again purely for location and basic accomodation needs. The pool was very cold and it was difficult to enjoy.

We stayed here for two Weeks September 2012. This is our Sixth Year at the Rising Star. For repeat Visitors it's still the Rising Star but not as you know it. It is still run by the same caring Staff and Alex the Manager. This Year it was still Self Catering but with Breakfast Provided. Next year it will be Half Board, which doesn't suite ourselves, as part of our Holiday is Dining out in the local Restaurants. The Hotel restaurant Breakfast was however very good, there was a good self service selection ranging from Full English to a selection of Cold Meats Toast Fruit Juice Etc.The Dining area was maintained to a High Standard as was all the Public Areas including the pool. This year we had a Room in the Annexe, which concerned us at First but it was superb great sea views and the same great standard of Room. Over the years this Hotel has changed from being all British to now being occupied by mainly by Russian and Skandanavian People, this isn't a problem except for the allocation of Rooms, with the better ones which overlook the Pool and Fig Tree Bay, being Reserved for the latter.Thomas Cook with whom we Traveled seems to only have the Rooms which overlook the Farm Land to the Rear of the Hotel. There isn't any entertainment Day or Night, which, doesn't bother us but would probably concern Families with Children.Protaras is still the same except for fewer people Dining out caused by more Hotels offering all Inclusive which will eventually Kill off the restaurant Trade. Places we Visit are the Nissitosis ( on the Beach just in front of the Hotel) Good for Lunch Time Snacks and Evening Meals. Good Food and Service. The Yianna Maria Just across from The Rising Star. The Towers Newly Opened on the Strip. And the Olympus, always busy. For a Good Morning Out try the Family Boat Capt. Panikos. Buy a Ticket from Geordi Al. On the Jetty.Boat leaves every Morning at 1100. A good Morning Out well Worth the money Trip includes Wine Fruit and other Food.

Having just returned from 2 weeks here. It was our 5th time here but 1st on b and b basis. Was delighted with choice of breakfast and quality of food. Excellent. However was a bit put off by staff snatching plates away before you were finished. Woe betide you if you went for more toast all had disappeared before you got back. Sunbeds very uncomfortable. Had to buy a cussion in Ayia Napa for them. We were told that Thomas Cook customers were not well treated as regards the best rooms. We could not complain as we were put in the annexe above the yianna marie offices and had a great room with big balcony and great sea view. However others that had been going there for years were not so lucky and were given rooms over looking waste ground. No entertainment for children. We were then told by others that Thomas Cook will not be accomodated in Rising Star next year which is what they did to their sister hotel The Golden Star this year. Very disappointed. Shame on the management for not treating loyal customers better. Staff couldn'tbe better especially Leo in Yianna Marie restaurant and Lucy receptionist in Rising Star

Room Tip: Don't be afraid to ask for annexe. All rooms have sea view and good balconies

We stayed at Tsokkas gardens a couple of times and watched this hotel being built,we decided then that it would be a lovely spot to stay. We came as a family, hubby, daughter, son in law and 2 grand daughters. We asked for a pool view room but was put into a rear view room,we were a little disappointed at first, but after the first night,we're glad we were put there. It was quiet, and actually more interesting to watch local life going on opposite, than music blaring around the pool!!Friendly staff and reps, our rooms were really nice, very clean, cleaning staff excellent. Always room around the pool, plenty of room and beds/ umbrellas, lovely grass area too facing the sea. Lots of good children's activities, which was enjoyed immensely. It's only a VERY short walk to the beach,my fave, good little cafes and cocktail bars for a nice lunchtime break, from all that chilling out by the sea!!! Cyprus is our most favourite holiday place. We always hire a car,but always do it ourselves and not thru the reps,it's so much cheaper, and good vehicles . Troodos area is always a day trip, Nicosia is a must go. Famagusta area, kyrenia and polis. We always take a trip to the donkey sanctuary, some of the villages in that area are fantastic, ask some of the English speaking locals, they will point you in right direction. Cape Greco a must too,you could spend a day just walking and swimming off the rocks, wonderful for snorkelling. Some lovely little coves all along this coast . Ayia Napa worth a visit, lovely harbour and great fish eateries, and nice beaches. Paphos a worthwhile but long drive. Protaras is our favourite place, everything you would want there, been there many times and we never tire of it . It's a tonic. We are planning a holiday next year yes in Protaras again, but may try another hotel. Forgot to say about the little cafe along the walkway from Protaras to pernera,it's wonderful, great food and very reasonable, and such friendly staff,AND we go away and come back 12/ 18mths later and we are welcomed like old friends.protaras has it all,go and enjoy
