At first glance, the Swan at Carp seems like just your average British-style pub - bar posters and gear throughout, a dozen beers on tap at the cosy bar and scores of international beers as well as some pub-type fare. There are even jazz sessions some nights. Open the menu and fine restaurant is the new designation. Hosts Joe and Sunna Thompson are Cordon Bleu graduates and it shows in their imaginative and nicely presented main courses and desserts. Our favourites are the delicious crepes and especially the Chicken Florentine and Lobster Newberg varieties. The main courses and attractive appetizers go well with a vast assortment of beers or with a decent wine list. If we have any criticism it is that, while quaint and atmospheric, the Swan needs a bit of a facelift, but it is still a great eating place for either the fine diner or the pub fan and it has no local competition since the Cheshire Cat burned down.
