“Not impressed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 September 2013

I asked taxi driver to bring me to restaurant serving typical local food. He highly recommended La Tomasita. I tried one of the local favorites, fish with creamy sauce and onions accompanied with rice and beans ... and I must say that I did not like it ... too many spices, which over-powered good fish.

Traditional peruvian meals served in a beautiful setting. Must try lomo saltado, taquenas and chiveche.

“Great Place for a Traditional Meal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 December 2012

Every Peruvian region has a traditional food or style of cooking/food preparation that is unique to the area. This is especially true in the Province of Piura, where the foods of the coast meld with the tastes of the sierras. We had a fantastic meal of fish (Ceviche) and traditional rice dishes (oh man - get the arroz con mariscos . . . . it is the best piaya outside of Spain). One of the best dishes for me was the La Tomasita rendition of Lomo Saltado - a traditional Chifa dish that has its origins in Lima. The beef was a bit tough - but the flavors were fantastic.

I highly suggest a mixed meal of seafood and traditional meat dishes. Consider getting a sampler platter that has a "mashed yucca" and a marvelous assortment of beef and pork ribs. In addition to the fantastic food, the restaurant has a fully functional air conditioning system. Believe you me - this comes in really handy on a mid summer afternoon (think mid-January when the temperatures are well into the 90's).

Speaking of afternoons - the best time to go to any traditional restaurant in Peru is mid-day. Most traditional places are closed after 4 p.m. In addition, the later in the afternoon you go - the more likely you are to run into an incomplete menu. This was true of our visit to La Tomasita - where they had sold out of a couple of the dishes we wanted to order.

One last thing - the service at La Tomasita is really underwhelming. in fact, this place would probably get better reviews if the service were not so marginal. Don't let the dissuade you - the food is fantastic and the people are very nice.

“Maybe the best in Piura”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2011

We had lunch at La Tomasita after it was recommended by people at our hotel. The food was very, very good. A cebiche of mero (stripped bass) was excellent as was a causa made with shimp. Others in our party had jalea, sauteed shrimp and some other dishes. Everyone was very happy. The only problem is that service is very rushed and it took a while to take care of our bill. We will definitely go back!
