“A nice place to relax”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

A nice hotel on Kalamata great beach. We stayed for 3 nights and very much enjoyed swimming & relaxed. Umbrellas and sunbeds are offered for free. Breakfast is good, we did not try the restaurant food - we preferred driving around in Kalamata and the wider area of Mani. The place is very nice, the room was ok - the bed was creaking. People, polite, kind, professionals. Spa and gym are included in the price, which I found quite high for what is offered overall. The rest of the hotel, unfortunately does not have much to offer, the lobby is nothing special, no activities for kids or anything if this is what you are interested. Kalamata is 5' driving, a nice town which reminded me a little of the past - maybe Greece of 80s or even 70s.

We've stayed there with our two babies- 2.5 years and 11 months for 4 nights in Superior Room. Lets start with the good things: the view is wonderful, the food is very good and the beach is beautiful with nice deep and clean water. The things that are bed from our experience: the maintenance is low. It starting in the gardens which looks quite poor, and defiantly not in a level of 4-5 stars hotel, continuing with stains on the public areas floor, and the towels are very chip and old that I wouldn't consider using at home...The TV is from the 80' but when we checked out we saw a delivery of new flat screen TVs. Another thing that really annoying is what they call "kids club" or something like that...It's a beautiful gallery floor with old and ruined toys that probably guests left at the hotel...The gap between what you see in their web site to the reality is huge...

Room Tip: Rooms with sea& pool view

We have been staying there every time we visit Kalamata because of it location on the beach and its proximity to town. The setting is lovely and we often meet our greek relatives there while attending the summer Dance festival.
It was recently renovated and the room was nice. Our original room assignment had problems with the A/C and we immediately asked to be relocated. Since we made our reservations in March for a July stay we got a special deal which made it much more reasonable. We did not insist on views because the premium to pay is too high.
The breakfast was very abundant and with incredible variety. The greek yogurt with honey is amazing! Oh, yes and they also have "loukoumades" at the breakfast buffet!!
The sea is very clean and the water at mid depth all the way across the coastline.

We stayed in the middle of August and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. We paid £2000 overall (including flights) approximately £1200 for the 'deluxe' hotel room and half board which we got 'upgraded to' anyway. Upon arrival we got an extremely vague greeting, no information was given about the area and no one offered to take our luggage upstairs to our room. The room was certainly not 'deluxe', the balcony was minuscule and had a tree right in front of it blocking any chance of the view. The room was extremely dirty, the CD player that was meant to be in the room wasn't there, the bed was extremely uncomfy , there was absolutely no decor to the room and it wasn't at all pleasant to be in. Admittedly the staff did act rather fast and we had a new and much better room the following day. Regarding the food: where to begin? We were lucky to be upgraded to half board for free (but with no explanation why) although both the breakfast and dinner buffet consisted if the same thing EVERY single night, the only thing that changed was the flavour of pasta. The food was cold, off putting and really not very eatable at times. There were a couple of nice staff but the majority of them were intimidating and not focused at all, on occasions they would forget to bring us drinks we had ordered and generally deal with things in the wrong way e.g not making sure the wine was cold before serving. Nightlife? Well there wasn't any in fact the only 'nightlife' was sitting by the pool in the evening listening to the children screaming their heads off. Be aware that the reason this hotel is costly is because it has a private beach literally 10 steps away from the hotel pool and that is it. Yes that's a great bonus but even then, all the sun beds and umbrellas are broken which makes it rather unenjoyable anyway. 1 last thing... You pay 4 euros for a coffee, and need a Mortgage to buy anything else.

The beach is one of the best I have seen in Greece if you are ok with pebbles. Blue and deep with min waves which is very nice. The hotel is old and not well maintained but so as the rest of the many others in greece. you should lower the expectations but probably one of the still good ones in the region. breakfast is ok compared to benchmarks in greece but far away from what you'd get in places like Turkey.

Mostly Greek people who are already connected/familiar with Kalamata will stay at this hotel, so they all know what they are dealing with, but if you are a foreign traveller it might be of use to you to know that the beach of this hotel is made up only of rather large pebbles and stones. The sea here is truly deep and for good swimmers only: goes deep quite early (almost as soon as you step in it) and gets really deep, so plastic shoes would be of use to you in order to deal with the big pebbles, if you are old or not very experienced in swimming, yet plan to swim in the sea. Having said that, the sea is crystal clear and really warm, especially in July and until august 15th.
The hotel has a great location and great views everywhere. There is abus terminating here connecting in to the city centre and it runs rather frequent.
Breakfast is superb (american as well as continental) but can get too hot to eat it in the summer, as it is often hard to get a seat in the indoors a/c'd restaurant, so one might need to eat outside in the heat. This can be hard in a place where temperatures in July frequently reach 38 celsius (and it is the same eating area for dinner, if you have half board). Apart from bus, you also have easy access from the hotel to Kalamata's centre by taxi, which the receptionists will order for you and it arrives in just 5 minutes (cost to town centre is about 7 euros). Most importantly for the summer months, taxis can quickly take you to the town's famous and most loved place to go for evening walks and restaurants/cafes/bars, which is the "Lighthouse Promenade ("Antivrahionas" in Greek), which can be reached by taxi from Filoxenia for only 5 euros. You can even walk back from Antivraxionas to Filoxenia, as there is a fabulous path by the sea for you to walk on, with great views and lively Kalamatan atmosphere. This town is one of the happiest, liveliest in Greece and recession feels far from here.

Downsides of the hotel, which are never fixed: the hotel is supposed to have wifi in the rooms, but from my room(s) the wifi has not worked in 3 years (I visit Filoxenia every July or August for 3-4 nights with my family). The reception staff will always bizarrely lie about this and say it is a temporary problem, but it seems to me to be a permanent one, at least for all rooms that are further from the reception area. As this hotel has 3 wings, the rooms with no wifi are not few. WiFi seems to only work in the reception are and by the pool bar and (maybe) in the rooms of the wing of the hotel closer to the reception (I am usually in the wing closer to the mountain, as i prefer it 'cause it is quieter).
Another not fixed downside: the rooms are hardly 4 star, (which the hotel claims to be), and are more circa the 3 star range. But this is often the case with Greek hotels located anywhere further than an hour's drive from Athens or Thessaloniki. The standard rooms are rather cramped, but the cleaning staff have always been very good, while I have stayed there, so rooms are quite clean and they are never short of product, even though the product they provide in Filoxenia is from obscure brands, and not by great greek brands such as Korres or Apivita, which is what other hotels in the Grecotel chain will give you.
Unfortunately, (at least for Greek clients that don't book through big foreign travel agents), the prices do not reflect the fact that these are not really 4 star rooms.
Another downside that has surfaced recently (since last summer): The prices at the beach bar are ridiculous, especially considering the quality of the drinks: 8 euros for a small glass (185ml) of unexceptional white wine, (that arrives to you warm if you don't go get it yourself from the bar), is laughable, as is the 5.5euros they charge for a small 330ml beer. Go to a cornershop and stock up is my advice, if you enjoy a glass of wine by the sea (they won't complain or even notice). Things used to be much cheaper until 2011 by the way, but now it even is 83 cents of a small 500ml bottle of water at all hotel bars and room service (used to be a whole euro, but the recent VAT reduction made it 83 cents apparently).

Room Tip: If you do not mind the noise of the pool that closes at 8pm and continues working as a bar/restauran...
