“Lovely Hotel”
Reviewed 14 September 2013

My partner and I stayed last weekend for a spur of the moment weekend away. The hotel is lovely, squeaky floorboards and lots of original cosy Victorian features. The staff were very friendly and eager to please. Food was excellent and good value for money. A wedding was hosted here during our stay and I thought it made a great wedding venue, big enough to accommodate a reasonable size party but small enough to feel intimate.....

We can definitely recommend this hotel and thank you to the staff for making our stay so enjoyable

This place is amazing... The downstairs has recently had a refurb and is truly spectacular.

When you drive up the long private driveway you feel excited about how imposing the building looks and this continues inside. There is wood paneling and a very large carved stone wood burning fire in the bar. Despite it being a hotel this places feels welcoming and homely!

The food is always stunning and I really recommend a visit.

We first went to a wedding and since then we have gone back for the food and a romantic retreat in the stunning rooms. We stayed in a room with a 4 poster bed which made our stay very special indeed.

A must visit if your in the area.

Didn't actually stay over here, just came for dinner.

Food was really very good. Best steak I have ever had, and the deserts are to die for.

Quite expensive, but you definately get what you pay for.

Would highly recommend for a special meal out.

As with many reviewers we stayed here recently following a wedding reception - hotel itself is family run and has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Our stay was very comfortable and the breakfast very filling.

The building is full of character and at the back is a charming and exceptionally well kept little garden which is akin to something you might expect to find at a National Trust property.

I'd certainly recommend this hotel and I'm surprised by some of the other reviews on here - as a seasoned traveller myself, I found my stay to be very reasonably priced for such a lovely hotel.

My daughter and then fiance booked the Oakwood for their wedding reception which was a sit down meal for 75 and then and follow through evening event for up to 125 ( we had about 100 guests I think). About 10 of the wedding party then stayed the night at the Oakwood and left about mid day on the following day. The hotel had been refurbished in between us booking and attending the events and although we thought it very nice before, the refurb was definitely a big improvement.

The whole event was superb - the staff were very attentive and very polished with the serving and attention to detail. They knew just when to be friendly and when to be that bit more formal and were all fantastic. The manager/head waiter was on hand with friendly guidance through the formal stages of the event such as the speeches and cake cutting.

We had ordered a relatively straight forward meal of chicken chasseur and vegetables with a nice soup and crumble to follow and it was all very good.

The grounds of the hotel are excellent for photography and we had an superb room ( more of a mini suite - room 11) on the top floor. I do think that the rooms vary though as our other daughter had a much smaller (she described it as poky) room - though she did comment that it was nicely 'done'. The bridal suite also was very nice - though I actually think our room (11) was possibly the nicer of the two!

Breakfast the following morning did not disappoint and overall we would not hesitate in recommending the oakwood to anyone for an event such as a wedding.

Like one of your other reviewers we, too, stayed at the hotel whilst attending a wedding reception there.
The wedding arrangements went smoothly and the food was good and served by attentive staff.
However, there are two things that prompted the title of this review:
- The hotel is, how can I say, "tired" and in need of some investment by the owners eg Our room - room 15 - was up in the attic and consequently had a sloping ceiling which was, frankly, dangerous because of its low height, the window was far too small, had an antiquated method of opening (we couldn't shut it right up) and clearly wasn't very safe if toddlers were in the room (sharp edges and non-safety glass). The shower cubicle was old with plumbing to match (the water oscillated from too hot to too cold) and was grubby. The room's décor was not very good, the finish was amateurish whilst the furnishings were cheap and un-matched...and there was no lift to get you up the numerous flights of stairs.
- The hotel is, I suggest, resting on its past history / quirkiness but is not up to the standards that the majority of seasoned travellers expect from a hotel of their star rating.....and certainly nowhere near the price band we were expected to pay (we paid £90 for B&B).

The staff were diligent and "committed to the cause" - all credit to them for being so - but anyone considering booking this hotel should take all the reviews into account and NOT be drawn in by their publicity material.

One last thing - they had Marmite available for breakfast (plus point)...but it was out of date by many months...!!

Stayed here after attending a wedding. The wedding etc went well and the food was good.Waiting on staff were competent and attentive.

However what spoilt it for us was our bedroom. My daughters room and mine smelt of smoke on arrival but with the window open we were so busy we never gave it a thought.

We didn't get a good nights sleep though because it smelt so bad, even the clean bedding smelt.

The hotel is worth a stay but choose upstairs rooms only and make sure its non smoking.I think if we had been told it was a smoking room we would have gone else where.

On leaving I did mention that we were not happy with the room and expected a discount which wasn't forth coming.I think £100 for the night was too much.

So just make sure you have the right info on arrival

Room Tip: Choose upstairs bedroom
