Thank you Grant and Annette for making our visit so memorable.

The rooms, the view, the birds and the company could not be faulted. We so enjoyed being together in the Lodge - and was definitely a Home away from Home feel.

You are both so lucky to have found such a beautiful piece of paradise, which we count ourselves lucky to have you share it with us.

Thank you so much - we will be back.

I would highly recommend staying at the waterfront french cottage at bream bay lodge.
My boyfriend and I stayed there this past weekend for our 4 year anniversary and it was absolutely idyllic. The hosts Grant and Annette were fantastic, you could not ask for friendlier more welcoming hosts- I was a little skeptical after reading some of the earlier reviews as we are a couple in our early 20's and one earlier review said they were made to feel unwelcome due to their age, well I would highly disagree, we were made to feel very welcome. We stayed for 3 nights in the french cottage, luckily we were the only guests which made the cottage much more private, however there is another cottage right next door so if you are planning to stay here I would recommend that if you are after privacy you check first whether the other cottage is booked for the same nights as if it is it would significantly cut down on your privacy. The cottage itself was perfect, it is equipped with everything you could possibly need, we stayed in the middle of winter and while we were only given a small fan heater, that was all we needed as the cottage is very warm and due to the open plan living, heats up quickly. The kitchen was great, there is no oven but the microwave isn't a normal microwave it has oven settings so it functions like an oven, however, I would recommend taking food that you can cook on the stove top or bbq. There is also no dishwasher but we didn't mind that. There is also a tv and dvd player and free wireless internet which was a great bonus.
In terms of activities, there is so much to do! We made use of the little rowboat and rowed over to the beach which was a gorgeous white sand beach with not a single other soul in sight! The gold class movie theater was another highlight, they have 200 movies to chose from and we were able to enjoy two movies and allowed to take in our own refreshments each time. The spa pool was also fantastic with gorgeous views. We also very much liked seeing all the different kinds of animals around the grounds, however, if animals aren't your thing then it wouldn't matter as they are kept in secure paddocks (except the bunnies, we had 7 bunnies outside our cottage at one point!)
Overall it was the perfect long weekend and we will definitely be back!
The only reason I didn't give the lodge 5 stars is due to the fact that if the lodge did have more occupants privacy would definitely be an issue as well as the availability of the facilities, for us this was not an issue but we thought it an important thing to note for future visits.

Room Tip: We would highly recommend The Waterfront French Cottage, as it has gorgeous decor, a full kitchen an...

Wow, what a hidden treasure this place is... I absolutely highly reccomend to all!
We stayed here for only one short night to get out of the hustle and bustle of Auckland and we couldnt have picked a better place to stay.
For starters, we were greeted by a couple of warm and welcoming smiles from Annette and Grant. They are perfect hosts: helpful, friendly and bubbly.
We were then guided off to our cottage and shown around their property. The views were breathtaking, the sound of the waves crashing was so calming, their place is just gorgeous.
We were shown our cottage which was clean and spacious, there was romantic french vintage style decor and it completely opened up onto a big deck looking over the estuary. We had a completely seperate driveway onto a fully fenced section: great for a dog, far from the roadside so no traffic noise what so ever.
The photos on their website just do not do justice!
I also did want to note, with most pet friendly accomodation the rooms are usually run down and dirty, this place is immaculate with no sign of any dogs previously staying,
We had the most comfortable sleep: best ive had in a long time, the only downside of this stay was that we had to make it so short.
If youre looking for a calming, peaceful and luxurious stay away, this is the perfect lodge to go to!! Thank you Annette and Grant, you will be seeing us again no doubt!

We stayed in the french cottage and it was just lovely. Very elegantly decorated with nice linen and decor throughout. Grant gave us a lovely welcome and tour of the grounds. Kayaking was a highlight and we checked out the local bird life. The rescue animals on the property was a highlight for me being an animal lover and they added to the whole experience. We just wished we could have stayed longer than one night.

Welcoming host. When we arrived he showed us around the grounds and gave us the tour. The lodge is right on the estuary with beautiful pohutukawa trees lining the shore. The water in the estuary is not very deep at all and was pleasant to swim in, although we'd recommend reef shoes. The ocean and beach are just a short kayak across the estuary where there were few, if any, people around. They have rescue animals on their property which were a delight to see, and to pet! They had a few other guests staying at the time, but it was not fully booked when we stayed there. They also have a very nice cinema that you can reserve a show time for, and choose from their movies. We ended up watching Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring because we had just come from Matamata that day and seen Hobbiton. The super king bed in the double ocean suite was superb and it was nice to have some screens on the windows so we could leave them open all night and hear the ocean and the sea birds. We also enjoyed the jacuzzi spa several times during our stay, but it could have been a bit hotter. Overall the hosts were very nice, but gave us some mixed messages.

My husband and I as well as our friends, another couple, had booked the double ocean suite, which says on the website is a first floor suite, but is in fact, not. This didn't make a difference to us really because we are all young and fit and in our late 20s, but for someone else with disabilities, trouble walking up stairs, this might present a problem. On the tour we were showed through the downstairs kitchen in the main house and were told we could use it, but just to put everything back the way we found it. We were told later by the lady host (after we had cooked some eggs and bacon and made toast and coffee in the morning..and cleaned up) that we were not allowed to use the kitchen. Also, we had read the reviews on tripadvisor that said they were allowed to bring wine into the cinema, so we had gone to the store and bought some candy and soda to have while watching the movie. I later asked the host if it was okay to bring them in just to make sure and he said we were only allowed water. Now, I don't know if he was just juding us by our age and assuming we'd spill on his seats or what? It seems to me like this lodge is trying to be too many things at once, for it is not a true B&B, because there's no breakfast, and it's not a Hotel, because there is no maid service. It seems like they're trying to be the best of all worlds, but it presents a very confusing situation for their guests.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for it's setting and amenities, but just make sure you know what sort of place you're booking, and if you have any questions about it, call before you book!
