“Beautiful Location and friendly service”
Reviewed 8 September 2012

Stayed here for two nights. The setting is just beautiful, looking towards the fells surrounding Buttermere and just a short walk from the Lake. I can't think of many more romantic places.

The staff were lovely and helpful. They dry your clothes (it can rain) and make you feel very welcome.

I will definelty come back. Often.

PS the food in the bar is good too. It's not as cosy as the bridge inn but I proffered the food.

Room Tip: All rooms have good views

It was bank holiday weekend so everywhere was busy. No tables were free at the Bridge so we tried the Fish Hotel for an evening meal.

The bar is a large, fairly featureless room - it does mean there is a good selection of different sized tables but I wouldn't call it cosy! We asked for a tab when ordering our drinks on arrival at the bar but were told that they don't do tabs. This meant we didn't bother with extra drinks or desserts and you do feel like they don't trust you.

The menu is simple with approx 10 main meals and 5 or so puddings. no starters. However, after the size of the main meals, you don't need a starter or a pudding probably! I'm quite happy with a limited choice if they cook what's on there well and they did. The one thing missing was a pie option - always popular after a long walk. The cumberland sausage, half roast chicken, chilli and salt and pepper squid all went down well with clean plates.

Just returned home from 2 days of constant rain in the lakes(not what we usually get) but this could not spoil the pleasure of our stay at the Fish.Usual spotless bedroom and bathroom, comfy bed and pillows(not like home but if it was so important to me I would have taken my own).
The breakfast was exactly as you would expect from a good B & B but with more choice of fruits and really good porridge. The menu in the Bar has changed slightly from our last visit and we did miss the homemade pies but there is loads of choice and ever changing specials. The Ham Salad still remains one of our firm favourites especially with a shared bowl of chips. We were a partly of 4 but we often holiday in a party of 16.When we do we realise that this is very difficult for the waiting on staff wherever we are and ask for paper to write our own order.Looking forward to our next visit what ever the the weather

The hotel is situated at the trail head for buttermere lake trails and it was spectacular. It was our Mini-moon and the Richardsons were wonderful in making us feel comfortable. Looking forward to going back for our ten year anniversary!

Called into the hotel on our way through Buttermere on the off chance of finding a room for the night. Staff were friendly and helpful, even offered to dry our soaking clothes from the days hiking.
Room was spotlessly clean and comfortable with good bathroom facilities.
Excellent range of local and international beers in the bar with a basic but appealing food menu. Portion sizes were immense and great value for money.
Found no evidence of the poor customer service claimed in other reviews of this establishment. Very happy with our stay in all aspects.

Room Tip: Can't comment on the other rooms, but room 7 had outstanding views of the nearby fells.

Been going here for years. Never had a bad pint or meal. Staff always welcoming and polite. Wonderful setting. Can't understand the negatives.I can only assume there are such people as poor customers who seem to enjoy holidays by making pretentious complaints about minor problems which I know the staff at the Fish always try to resolve to the customers satisfaction.
