“Good value grub”

The prices here are a little higher than average for the food... having said that you get a LOT for your money. You'd not need to order a starter, which is good because they don't do them! We didn't have room for desserts, which is disappointing because they looked HUGE! The ale choices were good and we had a lovely walk there each night for a pint. Lovely view and good service.

Stayed here with my parents at the recommendation of my very new father-in-law, whose aunt often stayed here to go walking. It's perfectly comfortable and clean, with lovely friendly proprietor and wifi, and nicely placed between Buttermere and Crummock Water. Buttermere is a 10-minute walk away and absolutely beautiful. If you don't want to eat there, there are at least two other eateries in "town" and a bus stop right outside. We took the family room (a double and single bed), but as it was the same price as a double and single room would have been, I slightly regretted it when the snoring started! Which I contributed to as well of course.

Just stayed for two nights with a group of friends and would wholeheartedly recommend. 5 real ales, very good value evening meals, superb breakfast and friendly staff. They also take your wet outdoor clothes away to a drying room if required. A pleasant residents lounge, but no mobile signal!

Room Tip: I think all the bedrooms had a lake view but worth checking before booking.

We stopped here as we wished to climb up Haystacks. Could not be in a better location and made a wonderful view from our bedroom window, of both Haystacks and of peaks.

Bedroom very clean as was the rest of the inn and a very goog bed.

Did not have an evening meal, but the breakfast was wonderful.

Will return when next in the area.

Stayed 3 nights over May Day bank holiday weekend, one couple and a single, joining 41 friends who were in the YHA and 4 who were in the Bridge for an annual get-together. We chose the Fish because it offered a better deal for our single companion.

Wonderful views from our room (10) along the lake and towards Haystacks. Having read Melvyn Bragg's "The Maid of Buttermere" it felt quite special to be staying in the inn where The Maid's father had been landlord (historically, not just fiction).

Evening meals in the bar were pub grub, not especially brilliant or cheap but absolutely fine, good service (the "special" on the board one night, slow roasted lamb with red wine and garlic gravy, looked good, should have chosen it I think).

Excellent breakfast: pity it only started at 8.15, but the waitress was ready to take our order promptly when we got into the dining room at about 8.14 and it arrived as soon as we'd finished our cereal (nice choice of fruit on offer too) so we enjoyed a full breakfast and got away just about in time to meet the folk who were at the YHA (unlike our friends at the Bridge where breakfast was apparently more leisurely).

Room 10, very comfortable, super bathroom, no problems at all. Posh biscuits with the hospitality tray. Wifi available (not advertised because not reliable), not bad in our room but better in the residents' lounge - but they do lock up rather early, before 11pm, and I felt I wasn't welcome to sit down there any later.

Plenty of car park space for guests.

A great place to stay and would go back there if I wanted to stay in the area again.

We stayed for the 3rd time at the Fish Inn and were not disappointed. The service was as friendly as ever and the food at the bar just what you needed after a good long walk. The breakfast was delicious and the room great and comfortable. Lovely relaxing stay and hope to return next year.
