Not the first time we've stayed here - and probably not the last . . .

Quiet, cosy, friendly, comfortable . . . good food, good beer . . . good drying room (we were lucky and didn't need it - don't stay in the Lakes unless you are prepared to take the weather as you find it) . . . excellent walking - we stayed 4 nights and didn't get in the car once!

Incidentally, if you want to track how far you've actually walked / climbed, get ViewRanger on your smartphone + full 1:25,000 OS maps of the Lake District - I'd still carry paper maps as they can't run out of battery and still work after being dropped in puddles, but this is an app that is now on my (almost) essentials list - note that once maps are downloaded this doesn't require an internet connection (mobile phone signal or WiFi) to continue working.

This was probably just at the start of the season (between New Year and Easter, the Lake District can feel deserted), so, apart from one large group who were staying, things were still fairly quiet. The bar closed early one night because no-one was in there - but the barman did check with all the residents who were in the lounge that they didn't want anything further before it closed. Yes, they do lock the front door at 10 p.m. - but did tell us when we arrived and said that if we needed to arrange to come in later that wouldn't be a problem. No, we couldn't check in to our room until 3 p.m., but they did take our luggage and make sure it was in the room ready when we arrived back from an hour or so's walk. And when things are quiet, most people do eat in the bar (so the restaurant can be quiet or empty) and don't expect the selection on the specials board to change completely every night.

Mod cons? Comfortable room, excellent shower, tea / coffee / biscuits in the room, warm and cosy lounge (possibly slightly too warm). WiFi - yes, downstairs in the lounge / reception / dining room, elsewhere pretty hit and miss (our teenage son reckoned he could get WiFi lying in the bath in room 5 . . .) - and they seemed to be in the process of improving coverage / reliability (not easy in an old building with stone walls that thick!). Mobile phone reception (Three network) - not a hope! Hooray! A chance to disconnect from the hurly burly! Even better - not a TV in sight anywhere (rooms, lounge or bar). If you actually want a real holiday away from other pressures, this is a good place to be.

Breakfast - good selection of full Cumbrian (black pudding and sausages get a special mention from me) or continental style - cereals etc. include porridge (highly recommended with honey!) - all served to the table, not buffet style.

Packed lunches (order the night before) - sandwich (ham + chutney was my preference) + chocolate brownie (!!!) + crisps (Seabrook - not Walkers, . . .) + fruit + drink - very welcome as there isn't a lot of scope to buy much else without driving to Keswick or Cockermouth.

Evening bar meals - kept us all (including a hungry teenager) well fed (everything we had was good, but Cumberland sausage and sticky toffee pudding both especially recommended). And do try the selection of locally brewed beers on tap.

Room Tip: Room 1 recommended - A. Wainwright's room - at the front of the hotel with 4 poster bed. Rooms...

Dear Nuttingcdef,,

Thank you so much for the in depth review of The Bridge, I am certain it will be very useful to others who read it.

I am delighted to see your review start with "Quiet, cosy, friendly, comfortable, good food, good beer" - these are really important values to us and when we read them we know we have achieved our goals.

I am glad you enjoyed our food offerings too - I feel our breakfasts are of high quality, and we are keen to keep the table service as is gives us the chance to interact with our customers in the morning. The packed lunches have been increasingly popular of late, and from what we hear, are substantial enough for the keen walkers. (The brownies are my favourite :) ) Our new bar menu has also been well received, with a few new tasty additions as well as keeping the traditional meals.

I have some good news too - we have an electrician coming this week to lay an Ethernet cable from Reception to the bar where we will place an access point - fingers crossed this will help the wi fi signal in the bar and possibly for a few bedrooms too.

I found one of your most helpful points being "If you want a real holiday away from other pressures, this is a good pace to be". This is so true - in this day and age we are in constant contact with our emails, work lives and other commitments that it makes it hard to switch off and appreciate the beauty, tranquility and peace we have. I believe that by not having TV's, by not having mobile phone service and by having limited wi fi, we are in a great position for customers to wind down and just experience the organic beauty of Buttermere.

Once again, thank you for your in depth review: I hope that it is of assistance to others who use Trip Advisor as a guide to booking their accommodation.

Best wishes,

Ray and team

My husband and I were just wandering through the Lakes District hoping to find a place to stay after hiking the highlands of Scotland. We were thrilled to discover this little inn nestled in the hills. We walked in, booked our room, strolled around the outskirts of the cute little village (hardly that!) then came in for a delicious 4 course dinner!
Overall, the hotel has a very quaint and personal service that is hard to come by these days :)

Dear Retzy B,

Thank you so much for your review of us, and I am delighted your chance encounter of The Bridge was a memorable one.

It is always nice to stumble upon a place and have a great time at the last minute. Quite a few of our regulars originally happened across us by chance as you had, and now we seem them frequently.

It is always so encouraging to hear that we deliver on personal standards and meet our customers expectations, thank you.

I hope that we can welcome you again in the near future, and thank you for your custom.

Best wishes from the Team at the Bridge,

We have just spent 4 days in one of the hotel's self catering apartments. The apartment was excellent - superbly clean, warm and comfortable, with wonderful views from every window. The accommodation is in a beautiful setting with numerous walks right on the doorstep. The food in the Bar was excellent and very reasonably priced. The Staff were all friendly and welcoming (even the 'behind the scenes staff' always had a smile or 'hello' if you met them in passing). We did some super walks during our stay and only wish we could have stayed longer. We said we would return and we certainly will.

Dear PDOB7,

Thank you very much for your review of our Self Catering apartments.

We have found the out of season short breaks to be very popular, and are delighted that you had the chance to make use of the offer.

We are so very fortunate to have all the walks right from our doorstep here in Buttermere, and often guests of ours who spend a week never have to use their car at all to complete all the walks they have planned in the valley.

Thank you again for your kind words, and we hope that we can accommodate you again.

Had a fantastic stay here for husbands surprise birthday treat. From my first enquiry they couldn't do enough to help. We even had help with our bags up to our room which was stunning with even prettier views. The chocolate 'birthday card' was a lovely touch! (Thank you)
Beautiful food served at dinner. Hubby even said it was the best steak he'd ever had!
After the best nights sleep in ages (silence really is golden) we were treated to a very yummy breakfast where again, nothing was too much trouble.
After a swift walk in the wind and rain we recharged with a hot chocolate in the bar before heading home to decide when we will return for a longer visit where we hope to start our 'To do' list of walks from the Bridge's front door.
I can't thank all the staff at The Bridge enough.

Dear Blue,

Well, I know you are a spaniel and I think its fantastic you can type!

Thank you very much for your kind words - it was great seeing you again and the humans. I thought you made good friends with Molly the Labrador, and you enjoyed the treats we gave you in Reception.

I hope we can see you again soon - try and convince your owners that May is a splendid time to visit :)

We stayed at this hotel for the fourth time last weekend and it was, once again a joy. The staff are friendly, lovely and go the extra mile to ensure guest comfort, welcome and satisfaction. It was my husband's birthday and the staff had left a treat for him in our room which was unexpected and extremely nice. We hadn't eaten in the restaurant before apart from breakfasts as we had been put off a few years previously by the food we had in the bar. I'm happy to type that the food this time was delicious and served beautifully. The hotel is clean, comfortable and we will certainly be visiting it as many times in the future as we can! The surroundings are magnificent with gorgeous Buttermere a short walk away. I can only highly recommend this hotel which provides a perfect accommodation for a variety of needs. If a guest wants to sit, relax and unwind there is a lovely lounge area. Or if walking is your thing there are many walks of various lengths, the staff will be only to happy to advise. We are planing the next trip back to the bridge for Easter.
