Milford Sound Full-Day Tour from Te Anau
Reviewed 24 January 2014

We drove into Milford sound at about 7.30am. Clouds hugged the soaring mountains around us as we descended towards the fiord, water pouring down the sides in varyingly sized waterfalls. The journey across the water and out to the Tasman Sea was imagination-provoking. The return car journey of approx. 7 hours to Queenstown was nothing compared to the majesty of Milford Sound.

We had a one day trip to Milford Sound, which included a boat ride with lunch. We were warned to take rain ponchos and jackets, even though it was late spring. The weather, while it could have been better, was good. Very little rain and it was not that cold. The Sound and the entire National Park is beautiful. It seems that in New Zealand people do care about the environment, and it shows. The park is pristine, the water clean enough to drink. The Sound is beautiful, waterfalls everywhere and jagged peaks, and snow at the tops. I did not appreciate the true beauty until I started looking at my pictures. Fiordland National Park itself is a place where you can spend days, but the gem is Milford Sound. We went from the dock all the way to the ocean, while this is called a sound, it is really a fiord. Hiking the park is a special trip and must be reserved since it can take days and there are cabin type structures to camp in. If one has the time and the energy this would be an incredible hike.

It's tough to say that any place in New Zealand is the most scenic, but Milford Sound definitely competes for it. I've climbed amazing mountains, hiked untouched valleys, and watched the sun set across the ocean, and still this was absolutely jaw dropping.

We were fortunate enough to have a relatively clear day, and we left Te Anau around 7 AM to beat the tour buses. That was barely enough time to make our 10 AM cruise, since we stopped to take photos and see The Chasm along the way.

If you've seen all the pictures of Milford Sound, it's difficult to describe much more than that. I'd recommend driving so you can stop where you want and when you want, since the weather changes so quickly.

We were lucky and stopped here on a very still day, so the little lakes were completely clear and reflected the mountains perfectly. It truly was lovely to see, and just about the right distance from Te Anau to warrant a 20 minute stop and stretch.

I particularly liked the little sign which had been designed upside down, so that on a still day when the lakes were reflecting, the reflection read right side up.

It is a beautiful little spot, and very convenient, being right by the side of the road (no ‘bush’ walking required!) with plenty of parking for those wanting to stop for more than just a couple of minutes.

We drove to Milford Sound from Te Anau which we used as a base during our tour of the Fiordlands. We had booked the 11AM cruise with Real Journeys. There are a number of spots with breathtaking scenery en-route to Milford Sound and it is advisable to allow 2 hours considering the short breaks. There may also be some wait at the Homer tunnel.

The cruise was fantastic with some awesome scenery. Got to see seals. The boat was taken close to the waterfall and being a sunny day we could even catch a rainbow.

Great experience, not to be missed.
