We stayed here two nights in a camper van. The campsite is located on the banks of Lake Manapouri. There's a beautiful path that leads directly to Pearl Harbour where most tours to Doubtful Sound depart from (5-10 min walk). The camp site is quite small, so I'd suggest to book in advance in summer. Facilities are a tad old, but absolutely spotless! Lovely place to stay with free WiFi.

We stayed at Possums Lodge in September 2013. Now we understand that this is winter time in New Zealand, but we really didn't expect our "motel room" to be quite so freezing. We had all the heating on and the electric blanket but still had to go to bed fully clothed. We even had the bathroom fan heater on and the door open, but still we froze. On day 2 we complained and more heaters were provided, but they barely warmed the place. It was a great shame, because the owner was lovely and the location was perfect.
I'm sure it would be a fantastic place to stay in the summer, but stay well clear in the winter!
The owner booked a cruise on Doubtful Sound for us and it's highly recommended.

Sorry to hear you had a cold night. We find a lot of our overseas visitors feel the cold more we do , we are only too happy to give out additional heating if required.

Allowing people to start pitching their tent at 10.30pm is just a little ridiculous. The owners need to consider a last check in time. We were all set to settle down for the night when our neighbours arrived and started setting up tent. 90 minutes later their child started calling loudly "Mummy". This carried on until 2.45am when they were rudely shining their torch lights into our tent and still hammering in pegs.

The kitchen is way too small. Cozy yes, but when you have three families wanting to eat at the table, which sits 8 people, its a little cramped.

The showers could do with a lock on the door so that no-one walks in on you. Yes, there is a curtain across the shower cubicle, but when the wind blows in its a bit embarrassing to say the least.

The owners were fantastic and offered us a refund which we didnt accept.

A very basic campsite perhaps not as quiet as they advertise it to be (with the neighbours). A bit more space between tent sites would help. . Lovely location. Friendly clientele. The lounge room is a great meeting spot.

The view of the lake is out of this whole for this small and funky holiday park. We parked our rv there and had a great time. The cooking area is small but has everything u need and the bathrooms were close by. The couple who owns the place were nice and fat kitty is your welcome wagon. Free wifi while in the lodge area. That was a nice well me to check in with family back home. We could also walk to Adventure Kayak for our Doubtful sound trip. I would recommend staying here if visiting Foirdlands.

We camper vanned around the whole south island and this was by far the best holiday park! The location was perfect, in the morning you will wake up to the songs of the New Zealand song birds, which was absolutely incredible. The boat dock for the Doubtful Sound cruise is a beautiful 5 minute walk from the campsite, it's in the forest with all the birds as well as next to the river and lake. Also at the dock you can rent a row boat to some great hikes. Short walk to the pub and a convenience store as well. We went during the winter and there was no one else staying their. The rates and facilities were not the best, but definitely satisfactory, if you want nice facilities pay the money and go to a hotel. If you plan on being in the area definitely take the time and stay their!

We rented an 'ensuite' cabin here, which turned out to be a little house with living area, real kitchen with stove, refrigerator and cooking equiipment, bedroom, and bathroom with shower. The decor was old-fashioned, but basically clean and comfortable. It was quiet here and near a couple of nice trails to walk along the lake. There were a couple of cafes within walking distance. Staff was friendly, wi-fi was free in the lounge area. They had other types of accommodation including standard cabins, backpacker lodging, etc.

Someone said in a review here that they didn't open the windows in New Zealand because there are no screens, but the reason there are no screens is that most areas have no biting bugs. The worst bugs are the sand flies which are not active at night, so it is usually ok to open your windows at night to cool things down for sleeping (and it does get cool at night on the South Island, even in the summer).
