“Excellent But Needs A Polish”
Reviewed 6 August 2009

What can one add to the already published glowing reports? Well I can only endorse the positives. An architecturally beautiful hotel in a wonderful Tuscan location. The room in the Papal Villa was wonderful, spacious and comfortable. It really did feel like staying as a guest in a private house, especially meeting the Princess every morning feeding her family of cats in the grounds. Staff are excellent, from Front of House, Restaurant to Housekeeping, always polite and efficient.
Now the criticism, I concur with previous comment about the “tired gardens”, they are, I can’t quite understand this as there are “available employees” to undertake some maintenance work. In the heat of the Tuscan sun it would have been pleasant to relax in a formal Italian Garden, but not here, rather overgrown and shabby. The excellent pool, with attendant, needs daily sweeping of pine needles from the pool surrounds. Small points but ones worth undertaking to meet five star standards. Complementary bottled water would have also been appreciated. The food in both restaurants is excellent, but the more relaxed pool location has a rather limited menu. I thought the food and beverage prices were excessive but this is of course a personal opinion based on comparing this level of dining experience with other Tuscan restaurants in the area.
To reinforce this point visit Villiam and Paula’s restaurant Alla Pieve in the village of Pievescola just a mile or so down the road, and enjoy a superb nouvelle cuisine meal of Tuscan delights beautifully prepared by Chef Paula and served with all the extras by your host, and wine expert, Villiam.
All in all don’t be put off, this hotel is unique, in a great location, with service you would expect from this grade of hotel, just needs some polish here and there.

We stayed at the Relais la Suvera for our Honeymoon in August 2008 and we could not say enough good things about our stay. The location was perfect, it was quiet beautiful countryside. We loved it. We could not fault the hotel, it was absolutely fantastic. The hotel has so much history to it, it was so interesting walking around the hotel and gardens/grounds, all superb. The views of Tuscany from the hotel were amazing. The rooms are decorated very nice and kept in style with the hotel. The food was out of this world, the staff could not do enough for you and were very friendly. All the produce is bought locally. We will definitely being going back. A really treat.

We recently stayed at Relais La Suvera in a suite with a beautiful terrace in the Frattoria building. Unfortunately the weather wasn't good so we were unable to enjoy the terrace as we would have liked. The rooms were beautiful but I felt that the living room was perhaps a bit too formal to relax in. The bedroom was very comfortable and the bathroom was quite nice (although it took a bit to figure out the shower).
The entire staff was lovely and very helpful. I had one of the best massages in my life in the wonderful spa with the jacuzzi in the old cistern in the basement of the tower--don't miss it!
We dined in both restaurants. I think that the food in the main restaurant could be upgraded. The appetizer was delicious and we had high expectations for the main courses, but they were definitely sub-par. The food in the bar was good--especially the steak cooked tableside--and the waiter/chef was wonderful. He descibed exactly how he was preparing the steak and sauce as he was doing it, which made it a fun experience. Breakfasts were very good.
Don't miss seeing the family museum and chapel. They have extraordinary art treasures and amazing artifacts found on the propery.

This is a most wonderful place, a beautiful country residence, once a Papal Villa and still owned by a Marquis and his Princess wife. History abounds, La Suvera even has its own Church in its extensive, but rather tired, gardens and grounds. The rooms and suites are great and the service could not be faulted, but . . . they don't even supply a bottle of water in the rooms, there are no flowers and not even some fruit - in an area where it grows in abundance. It's touches like this that can make a difference between 'OK' and 'fantastic'.

Mealtimes should be one of the highlights of a stay in a five star international hotel but regrettably not here. Maybe we were wrong to be staying here for a whole week because in that time the menus in the main restaurant and in the bar area did not change once. So fed up did we become with the same tired old menu that our culinary highlights were when we went off somewhere else to eat! When we remonstrated, we were told the menus do change - 'seasonally'!

It's a great pity because the staff are lovely and this has all the makings of a fabulous venue. But it needs more progressive management if it's ever to become truly fabulous.

We spent two nights here and had a lovely experience. It is in a very secluded area with little roads winding through the old Tuscan hills. Great location to go sightseeing in Siena, San Galgano, San Gimignano and Volterra... San Galgano & San Gimignano are a must see.

On the first night, we dined at the main restaurant which we found to be a bit too snooty, maitre d' (lady) was not helpful with food allergy but the food was ok. While we did not use, the sommelier appeared very knowledgeable as she took a lot of time explaining the wine and preparing the glasses.

However we dined in the bar area near the pool on the second night which had been played this down by the staff on the welcome tour. This was a Great experience - the food was superior and very accommodating to food allergies as "the food was prepared fresh"; the maitre d' was absolutely fantastic and very engaging. The beef fillet was cooked at the table to absolute perfection.

Other points: nice breakfast but not till 8am so tell reception ahead if you need breakie early; very firm bed; nicely decorated room; friendly reception staff who speak good english.

Not a great internet experience - could not send or receive email except by webmail but could surf the net.

Despite these negatives, it was a lovely experience and we would stay there again!!!

Never have we stayed in a hotel so divine. The spa and pool are impeccable. The service is quick, efficient and polite. The rooms and grounds are luxurious beyond words. Heaven on earth. Room 20 the Pope Villa is extraordinary. Highly recommend La Suvera on all points, and it is a perfect tranquil location to visit Chianti, very nearby. We plan on going back next year, and the next, and the next....

I visited La Suvera in May of 2007 with my fiancee during a trip to Florence and Tuscany...The hotel is ideally located in Tuscany...It is about 30 minutes from Siena, 90 minutes from Florence and just outside the heart of the Chianti wine region...The hotel is in a restored papal villa and is basically a showcase for the antique collection of the owners...Each room is designed in a different way and the attention to detail is incredible...The grounds are beautiful; filled with various plants, trees and animals...There is a lovely pool on the grounds...There is a spa located in the cavernous, medieval part of the hotel..The restuarant is very good and is surprisingly affordable...The hotel produces its own wine but I didn't think it was that good...Service is excellent and responsive...During my first stay at La Suvera, my girlfriend forgot a watch at the hotel...They did not register or insure the parcel and it never reached us in London...Thankfully, it wasn't terribly expensive but it did have some sentimental value...The hotel apolgized and offered to pay us back but thought they should have been more careful in sending back the watch...Most importantly, they were very responsive and quick to take responsibility...During my various trips to Tuscany we have visited various hotels and, in my opinion, La Suvera is the best...The only thing close is Villa San Michele, just outside of Florence in Fiesole...It is unique because it is so close to Florence (about 10-15 minutes in a cab) but allows guests to be able to relax on the beautiful grounds of a magnificently renovated monastery...I have eaten there and the restaurant is excellent and has a terrace with amazing views over Florence...That being said, it lacks the character and complete tranquility of La Suvera and still requires some effort and planning to get in and out of Florence to visit the various sights...Florence is not to be missed and is definitely the top attraction inTuscany but, if you want to explore the Tuscan countryside, La Suvera is the place to stay.
