“A welcome return - good food served again!”
Reviewed 2 February 2014

Our son recommended that we once again try the Giants Rest, an old favourite that had sadly declined under previous owners. It was every bit as good as we had been told! The chicken pate and smoked mackerel pate were delicious, but we could have done without as the main course was huge! The steak and ale pie (my personal measuring stick) was delicious, with huge pieces of tender steak, a delicious gravy, excellent veg & potatoes. My husband is still raving about the quality and crispiness of the belly of pork (his measuring stick!!), not even spoiled by the absence of his revered apple sauce! Wine at £14 a bottle, a pint and a G&T for £55 the lot - not bad at all!
Lovely and cosy, nice that they still have the wooden games and cards. lovely friendly staff. Just wish we'd had room for dessert.
Very, very, very, very good - this is one to recommend!

“First Class Traditional English Pub”
Reviewed 27 January 2014

This was our second visit to The Giants Rest and we can't wait to go again. Great food, fresh produce, friendly staff and atmosphere. Extensive menu with wide choice on the specials board.

“Glorious food in beautiful surroundings”
Reviewed 22 January 2014

Six of us ate at The Giant's Rest on a Saturday evening. We were staying at Wilmington Priory just down the road, so it was lovely to just be able to wander to the pub with no-one having to drive.

The pub looks lovely, with twinkly white lights round the doors, and in the bunches of twigs along the ceiling. There was a lovely atmosphere, a bit of a buzz but not busy. We were shown to our table which was marked with my name in chalk on a sliver of slate. It seemed a little odd that given there were plenty of free tables, ours was right by the bar, by the blackboard and on the way to the toilets. If it had been much busier, we would have felt in the way. However, it was an 8-person table for 6 people, so we had extra room and extra chairs for coats etc.

The entire menu is written up on a large blackboard with the specials on a smaller one, although there is a printed version on each table. They stock the local beer from The Long Man Brewery.

We bought a round of drinks at the bar and they offered to start a tab which is always helpful. We were given plenty of time to choose before our order was taken. We ordered four starters and six main courses. As a starter, I shared a baked camembert with salad and cranberry sauce with a friend. It came with a huge basket of bread. The camembert was done to perfection although it would have been nice if it had still been in its little wooden box, rather than on a small dish.

My main course was African Style Sweet Potato, Spinach, Okra and Peanut Stew. It was HUGE! Really good value for £11. My friends ordered the sea bass, the belly of pork, the local sausage and mash, the stew and a special. Everyone said the food was delicious.

We were all so full after two courses that we couldn't manage any of the desserts although we were very close to ordering the cheese board and the treacle tart.

The staff were friendly, all the orders were brought correctly and in good time. Unlike some other places, no-one tried to clear our plates until everyone at the table had finished. We split the bill and it came to around £24 each (food and alcohol).

We walked back to our accommodation fully satisfied and I will certainly go back again.

“A Well Kept Pub.”
Reviewed 9 January 2014

Booked a table for two people on a Friday evening.
Arrived in the middle of a storm so was surprised, on entering the pub, to find the log fire just about lit, not giving out a nice welcoming warm smile. Definitely needed stoking up.
The young lady bar / waitress was very accommodating and good fun to talk to.
A small crowd at the bar and also a few tables already occupied made a good atmosphere.
Food wise, between us we had Pheasant and Chicken which we thought was excellent in taste, presentation and quantity.
A good selection of well kept real ales was a bonus and went down very swiftly.
The toilets were in a good hygienic condition.
I have had lunch at this establishment, in the summer months and enjoyed sitting outside watching the world go by.
Situated just off of the A27 road, easy to find, a car park at the rear makes this pub well worth a visit.
