Skip the noisy locale down the block... This place is been around for many years. Service is good and the food is also. But dinner on the balcony next to the sea... Watching the pelicans dive for food . Tranquil and quiet, this is the place to eat.

This restaurant has been around for some years now, so we decided to go to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We ordered beer, sangria, fish turnovers and marlin bites to start. The turnover and marlin were quite tasty. For entrees we had garlic lobster in mofongo (mashed green plantain). It was not garlicky, tasted bland although it was freshly prepared. Service was ok, the sangria was watery, wouldn't go back to this place. Once was enough.

The food here is usually fresh especially the lobster. There are many divers who use the bay and they pick up lobsters. When they do and get them up on land all of a sudden they don't know what to do with them. So the sell them to the restaurant. Same with the fish. Land crabs are kept in pens outside the front entrance.

With friends in Salinas, we were introduced to this restaurant, and every trip we make the hour ride from San Juan for the food. Good seafood, and typical Puerto Rican fare. The tostones rellenos come in shrimp, lobster, crab -and are extremely tasty! You cannot get them in San juan. Ask for Benny

Jan. 18, 2009. We stopped at Puerto al Sol last week on our way back from Guanica to San Juan. This was our third or fourth visit, and the restaurant changes not at all. It is timeless. Eat outside and watch the terns and pelicans search for their lunch while you eat yours: a huge pot of asapao (seafood stew with rice) or, for a smaller appetite, the small seafood "soup." Not fancy -- the chairs are plastic, the single washbasin serves for both men's and women's restrooms, English is barely spoken -- but you won't find more satisfying food in all of Puerto Rico. For a truly different dessert, try the preserved fruit with manchego cheese.

Only problem is finding it. Leave Hwy 52 at the Salinas exit, turn left at first stoplight onto Hwy 180, which circles eastward around the town of Salinas towards Playa de Salinas. Turn left at end of street onto Hwy 701. If these directions don't work, ask! Puerto Ricans are friendly, helpful and if their English isn't good they are very articulate with gestures. Puerto al Sol is worth the detour!
