“All ring and no doughnut”
Reviewed 23 August 2013

I don't know how other reviewers can say this hotel offers "outstanding service". Maybe they all came at a dead time of the year. Or, simply, it may as well be that we were unlucky, but the fact is: whatever interaction we had with staff, we had to wait absolute ages for service.

Example no.1. Our arrival. 1:45pm. No-one manning the desk, the poor receptionist can be seen running up and down with towels while radioing people every two seconds. Phones ringing like church bells at reception. People waiting and waiting ahead of us.
After waiting (at least) 15 mins for my turn, I am finally told that our room is not ready and that we have to wait at reception for another 20 mins. Very matter of fact. No apology, nothing. Bear in mind we'd been travelling and we were knackered. Remember this is a *Four Star* hotel.

After 20 mins, I walk up to the desk to remind the overworked receptionist that we're waiting. "Oh yes", he replies. He radios the cleaners. He tells us we can go upstairs.
Definitely off to a bad start.

Example no.2. The downstairs restaurant ("El cenador"). Packed. One poor waitress, rushed off her feet, looking flustered, trying her best to attend everyone. It almost makes you want to go "don't worry, love, take a breather, we'll go elsewhere". Why on earth management doesn't hire more staff (it's mid-August!!!) is beyond me. They certainly look like they can afford it.

Oh, and by the way, the food is also super basic - forget a leaf of lettuce or a potato on the side, you get what you order (four star hotel, remember).

Yes, the rooms are amazing. They look absolutely new, trendy-looking, spacious and immaculately clean. The bathrooms have two sinks. The location is central, opposite Gaudi's "Palacio episcopal", awesome. The facilities are great, the spa is most certainly enjoyable (though, for the record, it's not included in the room price - it's 12 Euros a piece - and beware that shower caps are mandatory in the spa and if you don't have any they charge you €3 for one).

Unfortunately, though, a lot of it is gimmickry. Example: you get those grand Buck Rogers showers which look like they're from outer space, but you also need a degree in astrophysics to understand how to work them, which is quite frustrating when you simply want to have a nice warm shower. When I tried, a metal boulder came off the tap and landed on my toe. Nice.

Management are obviously aware that the showers are weird to work as they put (inadequate) instructions in every room.

The back garden is lovely, a picture basically, but you can wait ages and ages to get served a simple beer. Again, recruit more staff!

You ask for information and you're curtly told "it's written here", pointing at a maze of signs and notices at reception.

In short, Hotel Spa Ciudad Astorga certainly looks the part, but it's not worth the money as it's unnecessarily expensive and the service not up to it. Overambitious, perhaps. Frustrating, certainly.
Would NOT recommend.

Spent one night at the hotel/spa during our trek of the Camino de Santiago. The facilities of this hotel were truly outstanding, and the attitude of the staff was as positive as any I have encountered anywhere in the world. A very positive experience.

Very modern hotel in the centre of Astorga just around the corner from the Gaudi Palace and Cathedral. This is a lovely little town full of surprises.
The hotel was great value and offered parking - it also benefits from it's own tapas bar where we had a snack at lunchtime and it was so good we returned for our evening meal. Lovely atmosphere and full of local people. We didn't eat in the restaurant but I'm sure it would have lived up to the rest of the hotel.
The gentleman who checked us in on our arrival was very helpful and friendly, however the servers in the tapas bar were quite grumpy - service with a smile would be much better, maybe some training needed.
Altogether a very enjoyable stay and would recommend a visit to this little town with great character.

Room Tip: High floor room overlooking garden.

We stopped in this beautiful little town for one night while walking the Camino de Santiago. The hotel is new (under 1 year old) and right next to the Gaudi castle and the cathedral.

Many positive aspects: nice room (although on the small side), great design, incredibly comfortable beds, beautiful bathroom with quality equipment and a nice view over the garden from our little balcony.

The hotel has a strange policy towards the usage of the spa. The spa and pool are opened to anyone (even those who do not stay in the hotel which I don’t regard as fair) and they charge a 12 euros fee per person for residents. Still a really relaxing experience (we were the only ones in the spa).

Would highly recommend this option if you visit or pass through the city of Astoria.

Room Tip: Balconies are small but give a sense of extra space to the rooms

Good but the rooms were small . Perfect location next to the main square . Nice look but not so friendly staff . The pool ,because we got there at six was a waste of money for the hour we could get because it closed at seven . When we got. Back at nine thirty , there were still people down there . The breakfast is good

We checked out of another local hotel which couldn't provide internet service, and started looking. Very gracious welcome, offer to use their internet service even without being a guest, showed us reasonable rooms availabe ... we recommend the superior rooms, amazingly quiet. Skip the breakfast, but try the local hotel cafe. The only disappointment was the high charge to use the pool and sauna which we skipped.

Room Tip: go for a superior room.

Our room was spacious and very elegant, and the hotel and grounds as a whole looked great. Staff were friendly and helpful, we needed a late checkout and this wasn't a problem at all. The spa was very relaxing, and well thought out. My only fault was that the breakfast was rather mediocre, and they seemed to have run out of a lot of things. I would stay here again.
