I can only warn you to STAY AWAY. The owner was extremely hostile/aggressive to me/my wife & 5 month baby. I had to physically remove him from our room, even then he forced the door open & continued shouting within inches of my wife/baby. I physically moved him again & he said he would call the police. We packed up/left immediately. He went crazy after I asked politely if the fridge could go colder to chill baby's breast milk, and if the air con could go cooler as it appeared to not work. **Please don't risk ruining your holiday and please do not give this man your money**. This is seems to be a regular problem here if you read other reviews, I see 3 times. The 'junior suite' was v.small, dark, hot and had spiders. The pool looked milky/dirty.

Room Tip: Air Con is very poor. Junior Suites are very small/hot. Spiders in room. Pool milky/dirty.

We ate at the Taray, which is now noted in the Michellin Guide. The food was excellent, and extremely good value. It would seem that they price meals based on the cost of the ingredients to them (rather than what they can get away with charging), as there is a wide variation in prices (6 Euro's for beautiful swordfish for example), but the quality is the same.

The setting for dinner is tranquil, the service good, and at the overall cost, this is, I would suggest, the best value restaurant in Orgiva, if not the wider region.

The rooms have been refurbished since our last visit - not the height of international luxury, perhaps, but nicely decorated, very clean, with comfortable beds, good lighting options, big wardrobe, plenty of luggage space. Unlike some other reviewers, we had a good-sized bathroom with shower over the bath, bidet, etc..
Good air con and heating (can be cool at night in the mountains) Everything worked perfectly.
No real seating in the room, other than the bed and one upright chair, but the rooms open onto large verandah, each room with its own outside chairs.
Beautiful, peaceful gardens full of orange trees, many plants with information labels (they take the 'botanico' tag seriously!) and views of the surrounding mountains.
Enormous double swimming pool - one section fairly shallow, one for more serious swimmers.
The two big selling points of the Taray Botanico are the food and the very friendly (and efficient) staff.
Can't think if anywhere else you could possibly get a three course meal of this quality, plus a glass of wine, for 12 euros. Really great food, and great service.
Most of the staff speak at least some English - those who don't, are adept at understanding and making themselves understood, and were very tolerant of our mangled Spanish!
Orgiva itself is a fairly nondescript agricultural town (apart from an amazing number of ex-70s hippies who seem to have moved there!!) but the surroundings are breathtaking.
We'll certainly be back, and wouldn't consider staying anywhere other than the Taray Botanico. Many thanks to all the staff !

The service, including at meals, was very friendly and helpful.
The rooms are basic, particularly the smaller rooms where there really isn't anywhere to sit and read except the bed.
The en suite was not well laid out so it was a balancing act with towels, dry clothes and toiletries. The water temperature of the shower was unpredictable - we had lukewarm showers a number of times although the shower was very pleasant when it was hot.
Breakfasts were adequate. Dinners were quite good.

Room Tip: We had a small room so there wasn't much space for a couple.. There are larger rooms with a sm...

We stayed here one night in January, on our way through. We were walk-ins and were very warmly welcomed by the owner. It has not been the cheapest place we stayed in, but it has been one of the best dinners we have had during our trip and one of the most quiet sleeps. When we mentioned our lack of sleep at our last hotel (crying kids and an arguing couple), he made sure to give us a room with no neighbours whatsoever - very considerate. He then continued to explain to us how to turn off the airconditioning/heating system and use a small space heater for overnight for complete quiet operation.

We opted for half-board: dinner and breakfast included. After a long day it was a relief not to have to drive into Orgiva (about 1km away) to try and find a place to eat. Dinner was absolutely wonderful: "home-grown" trout (they have their own fish nursery), sole, great soup and salad and a wonderful local organic wine to accompany it. Our waitress did not speak anything but Spanish (and we speak about everything but Spanish..), but she took all the time to try and explain dishes to us with hand gestures, pictures, etceteras. We actually managed to understand quite a bit and picked up a bit of Spanish along the way!

The room was comfortable with fantastic views. The only small negative would be the shower: it is located on the wrong wall. Where it is situated now (facing width wise in the bath) you basically flood the bathroom when turning on the shower, you're better off taking the showerhead into your hands. Moving this to the other wall - lenght wise - would solve this issue. The shower itself was comfortable: nice and hot, consistent temperature, good pressure.

Overall it has been a great stay - the place is absolutely beautiful with true Andalucian style and hospitality.

We couldn't return soon enough after our fabulous stay in September 2009, once experienced there is a longing to return to The Taray. Once again we were not disappointed.

The Taray for us is a place of tranquility, inspiration and relaxation. Not only is the setting and the hotel a beautiful gem, the owner and staff make it fabulous. Eladio, the owner, is a very warm and welcoming man with a wry sense of humour. His staff are very friendly and so helpful, and nothing is too much trouble for them.

Eladio, his family and staff take great pride in their Hotel providing guests not only with all one would expect from a very well run establishment, but more than that, especially for us, a sense of being cared for and valued.

We have stayed here about four times during the last eight years. This time we decided to stay for a whole week and we did not regret it. The hotel's rustic theme and personal service appeal to us. It is a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful Alpujarran scenery. The gardens are filled with attractive fruit trees and palms. The two swimming pools are excellent - there is plenty of room for all the guests, plenty of shade and adequate sunbeds.

The rooms, of which there are only fifteeen, are chalet style each with its own front door. There is a separate lounge with TV (but only Spanish stations are available), the bedroom has plenty of storage space and the bathroom has all you need. It was very hot while we were there so we were glad of the air conditioning.

The restaurant is rustic Spanish style with a very pleasant terrace outside. The breakfast was very good with plenty of orange juice (and other juices), tea, coffee, fresh bread, hard boiled eggs, ham, cheese, chorizo, cereals, yoghurt, madeira cake and best of all fresh apricots from the trees in the hotel grounds. Lunch and dinner were pleasant enough, nothing to write home about but the staff are very friendly (which makes up for the service being a little slow). Eating there is a pleasant experience as the ambience is relaxed and friendly with small fountain in the courtyard and the sound of birdsong in the trees during the day or the cicardas at night . Prices seemed fairly reasonable.

The hotel is about a kilometre from the village of Orgiva where there are some restaurants and quite a few bars serving tapas. So there are just about enough places to go to if you are staying for a week. We drove into Orgiva every time - it is walkable but not in the July heat (even at night it is very warm). There is ample free parking in the grounds.

I would recommend this hotel if you are looking to chill out in a scenic setting. It has all you need, the theme being rustic paradise rather than luxurious or sophisticated. It is not for you if you are looking for nightlife or gourmet meals but I thoroughly recommend it if you want to experience the real Spain.
