“A True Experience of Rural Spain”

My sister and I rented this place for a week in September, after which I wrote the following: This typical Alpujarran town house is situated ten minutes walk north of the town centre and has all ameneties, including an excellent air conditioning unit which is required during the normal `holiday' season, but which would be surplus for six months of the year. What it DOES NOT have is three bedrooms - or even two. It has one bedroom with a double bed on the first floor next to the toilet and bathroom, and a single bed in the dining area of the top floor lounge - this is a large room divided into two by the landing at the top of the spiral staircase; one side single bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, sink, fridge, table & chairs and air conditioning unit; other side three seater bed-settee, TV set, TV table, double doors leading onto balcony. The bed-settee is presumably the third bed, but the bottom had fallen out of one side and it was thus unusable for anything as precarious as sleep!
I think we caught the owner on the hop as he hadn't had time to clean the place out when we arrived, but he kindly went out and purchased some cleaning materials and we set about the task. It was disappointing to find so much rubbish under the double bed, bottle tops, celophane from cigarette packets, empty plastic water bottle, the flotsam & jetsam of a previous occupants sojourn, no doubt - and lots of fluff and dust, but we soon swept up and mopped the tiled floors and settled in snugly for the next week.
It seemed a bit tatty around the edges and in need of refurbishment and decoration, but this is typical of such houses in this area of Spain. The toilet seat needed repairing, but the shower, though primitive, was adequate and there were lashings of hot water on all three floors. There were an abundance of towels available both in the bathroom and in the double wardrobe on the top floor, and the kitchen was well equipped with an excellent electric cooker, and lots of utensils, spices, crockery - and several sets of knives, forks and spoons - everything you'd ever need in a normal domestic household, even down to a washing machine tucked carefully behind the sink in the bathroom and two microwaves! The tiled spiral staircase was a novelty - for the first four days, after which climbing the stairs to carry water and food up from the kitchen on 67 year-old legs became very tiring and very tedious - so we took to eating at the kitchen table and just used the roof terrace for relaxing with a bottle of wine in the evenings - taking great care not to fall down the stairs on the way to the loo before going to bed! My sister, who had the bedroom with the double bed, complained that `there's a lump in the middle' - whilst I slept very soundly and very comfortably in the single bed on the top floor, waking every morning to the delight of sunlight streaming through the double doors leading to the balcony.
My sister, who is used to more refined living and expects home-from-home comforts when on holiday thought it was `the pits' when we first arrived, but later accepted that it was, she supposed `probably adequate'. Whilst I agree with her, I don't share her sentiments and for me it was perfectly acceptable. Yes, there could be many improvements made, but it's a snip at the price - and exactly what I'd recommend for anyone like me who wants to visit the Alpujarra and experience the life and lifestyle of a local Spaniard for a few days!
Given the time and opportunity I would certainly like to go back again. I'd also recommend it to certain friends; some would love it whilst others would'nt be very impressed to say the least. Me? I loved it!
