“Hard to Describe”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

The Hill of Crosses in Lithuania is one the most moving places in the world (to me). Believers in the God pray and then may leave their own cross (purchased at a nearby shop) at this hill.

Read the other reviews about this hallowed ground, but to be there is a once in a lifetime experience. I planted a cross there in honor of my family.

“The Spirit of Rebellion”
Reviewed 31 May 2014

It's not so much the Hill of Crosses itself that impresses but the spirit of religious rebellion behind it. While the Hill of Crosses dates from the 1800s, it's time of the Russian occupation from 1944-1990 that really resonates. Religion was outlawed and the hill was bulldozed at least three times by the Russians. However, the crosses kept being replaced. It was a very Lithuanian type of rebellion.
On the surface, the place is almost tacky. However, the spirit of the place is overwhelming. Definitely worth a visit if you wish to understand Lithuania.

“Great unusual place”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

Name says it all, it's a hill with crosses, however the number and scale of crosses is incredible and worth exploring for half an hour or so.

“Worth due to the religious meaning...if you are around”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

PROS:
- the religious meaning
- The atmosphere
- There´s a special altar made when the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1993.

CONS:
- In the middle of no where
- Location

SHORT REVIEW:
- On a business trip between Riga (Latvia) and Šiauliai (Lithuania) with a local business partner, we stopped here to have a look, but the weather was terrible, so was not possible to leave the car.

DO I WILL RETURN?
Maybe not, one visit is enough.
