My wife and I have just returned from a two week holiday at Chaaya Reef Ellaidhoo, this was our 5th trip to the Maldives, our first to Chaaya Reef.
We arrived on the island and were greeted by the management team, served cold drinks, given all required info and room keys, that was the hardest we worked for a fortnight.
We stayed in a water bungalow which was well equipped, spacious and comfortable, plenty of hot water, tea, coffee & minibar, hairdryer, iron & board.
Beach towels are also supplied, so more space in the case for the womens shoes which they don't need.
This end of the island was served by the Malamathi bar & restaurant, which was fabulous, a big open kitchen where you could have your food cooked before your eyes, fish, steaks, chicken, pork, pastas or a great buffett with a good choice of dishes and deserts to die for. The staff here I can guarantee you will wan't to pack into your case and bring home, Pushpa, Gamini, Hassan, Riana and too many more to mention were terrific, this was the same for all the staff on the island, from the pool man to management. they genuinely got pleasure from making the guests happy. All guests were talking about repeat visits, a compliment to the staff.
The island manager Mr Prem Kumar (find him on Chaaya Reef Fans on Facebook) did everything in his power to make sure everybody had the best time possible and regularly visited the restaurant checking all was well.
The island has a well equiped gym (not that I used it) and a great spa with a good range of treatments. The shallow lagoons and super soft sand were ideal for a dip, well sheltered from the deeper sea, for those that prefer, there is a large infinity pool.
The diving & snorkelling are just the best, a house reef with a 30+m wall with overhangs, soft and hard corals and everything from turtles and sharks to nudibranch's and shrimp. A review of the dive base will be done on their site.
Can't wait to return

Had a wonderful stay at this lovely island. Snorkeling is wonderful, good tip, go night snorkeling with a torch this is when all the big fish come in, amazing.
We stayed in beach bungalow 309, unfortunately I lost my lovely white gold diamond ring, so please if anyone should find it please give it to PREM as is of great sentimental value. PREM upgraded us to a water bungalow, beautiful in side but quite noisy and no steps into the water.
Got to mention the bar staff as they really made our holiday special, such lovely guys, Dileepa, Sideth, Shalen and Nalin, always ready to shake your hand with a lovely smile.
I wont go on just read all the positive reviews.

Room Tip: Best bungalows are 301 to 311, noisy air condition

We have recently come back from an outstanding week at Chaaya Reef. We do not usually take package holidays but Thomson offered what we felt was a very good deal on an all inclusive package for a week in early May. And for us the resort was all but perfect. One of the best house reefs in the Maldives and absolutely faultless service. From the moment we arrived when the whole management team come out to say hello to the moment we left when the management team were there again to wave us off it was clear that from the General Manager (Mr Prem Kumar) down quality of service is central to everything they do.

There were a number of learning points that are worth passing on so please forgive the somewhat long review.

Chaaya Reef is not an expensive resort by Maldives standards and so we were prepared for a few compromises. What was surprising was how few compromises we had to accept! Perhaps the only real niggle was that the "All Inclusive" menu did not include espresso based coffee (Latte/ Cappucino/ ...); did not include orange juice (as in from oranges rather than cordial which was offered) and did not include "popular" cocktails like Pina Colada. But when I mentioned these to Mr Kumar towards the end of the holiday, on one of the many occasions when the management took the time to ask for feedback, he did agree that coffee should be included, that cartoned orange juice (quite reasonably not freshly squeezed) could probably be included in the budget and that the inclusive cocktail list could be extended. He promised to look into it so you may find that by the time you get there this very small niggle has been resolved. If not then do make the effort to feed back. I am sure that Mr Kumar is genuinely keen to continue to exceed his guests expectations!

The Air Taxi was great but a useful point to note is that luggage often travels separately from the passengers. However, we now understand that the thing to do is pack everything you want for the first day in one bag. Tell the Air Taxi check in desk at Male airport that you need that bag to travel with you and they will priorise that bag over your other baggage. (I wish we had known that in advance!).

On arrival if you are all inclusive, you will be given a wrist band to prove you are all inclusive. The default is (unsuprisingly) that you wear it on your wrist. However, if like us that reminds you a bit too much of teenage music festivals rather than an upmarket paradise resort then you can ask to put the band on your door key instead. This is what we did and it was fine.

The spa was exceptionally good (Miss Jenny and the girls are fabulous!). We had almost every treatment going (Miss Jenny is a good sales person!) and I can recommend them all but particularly the hot stone massage. I suggest you try it even if you have tried it elsewhere, as here it is much more of a massage! Unlike some places where the stones are just put on and left, here they actively massage you with each hot stones before putting it into position. Bliss!!

The dive centre is efficient and with the house reef at hand incredibly convenient. Being German run, the Tutonic manner may jar a little with the laid back nature of a tropical island but this is one area where I would rather trade a little "bon ami" for the confidence of German rigour!! We took the unlimited 6 day dive package as we planned more than 10 dives and it was great to have the freedom to "dive when you want".

Clearly if you come to this part of the world outside the dry season you are going to get mosquitos! Our room had a little tablet based plug in mosquito repellant tucked away in a draw, which combined with a spray repellant for outside meant we had no problems. The reception were very good at providing additional tablets on request.

There have been some comments in other reviews about the air conditioning being noisy in some rooms. We found that if we ran the AC very cold then it was indeed somewhat noisy but if we set a reasonable temperature then it was not a problem. Similarly, others have said that the water bungalows being semi-detached is a problem but I must say we had no problem at all. The sea wall could have been more sympathetically built but again we did not find it a significant negative and it clearly is there for a reason.

So all in all, a fabulous holiday, with amazing diving on our door step, all the facilities we could ask for and quite possibly the most attentive service we have ever experienced anywhere. We would certainly like to go back and would recommend Chaaya Reef to our friends.

Just returned from 2 fabulous weeks in Ellaidhoo with my hubby. Have to say that having been to 4 other islands in the Maldives, this one is my favourite. The staff as mentioned by other reviews, really do make the holiday special. Prem in particular was always on hand to ensure our stay exceeded our expectations, making it one of our best holidays yet. The bar staff in both bars were exceptional as were the spa staff who delivered 5 glorious hours of treatments to me during my stay. We were lucky to be staying in the water bungalows which were stunning. The food was of excellent quality and much of it was cooked to order by the really friendly chefs. The pool area was often quiet and the pool attendant always on hand to bring a lounger mat and towel to you upon arrival. Entertainment was a singer/keyboard player each night in the main bar, with 2 nights per week devoted to bingo and crab racing! Have to say that the bingo in particular was hilariously delivered by Pushpah and a single game would take 1.5hrs as he'd make everyone guess the number he had just drawn from the box!!
I would definately recommend this island to everyone as I couldnt fault it. Special thanks again to Prem for making our holiday so special xxx Hope to see you all again in November if I can save the pennies in time.
