The trip to Filitheyo marks our 8th trip to the Maldives (Baros x 1, Reethi Rah x 2, Vakarufahli x 2, Kuramathi x 1, Miri x 1). We decided on Filitheyo because Miri was closed for a refurb (Miri was outstanding in terms of food and standard of accommodation) and the house reef was recommended as being excellent. We booked a detached beach bungalow and were a bit disappointed by its location (lagoon side, no cool breeze and close to the jetty so we heard the boats at dawn) and its close proximity to the other bungalows and the fact that the bungalows were not off-set which meant that all the verrandahs were in a line so there was a lack of privacy. We therefore upgraded to an over the water villa and our experience changed totally - it was as if we were on a different holiday.

Whilst the villa itself was a little datedin its decor, we were not paying the same prices as we were in Miri so cannot complain. Our villa benefitted from a sea breeze which also kept the mosquitos at bay (this is the first island we've been on which has had a mosquito problem and it's far worse on the main island). We had wonderful sunset vistas. Our only other comment would be that the steps down to the water were accessed from our deck which was outside our bedroom - this meant that we had to walk through our bedroom in wet gear on our return to get to the bathroom which was at the rear of our bedroom. We only mention this because the floors can get a bit slippy. The food was very good quality and very tasty. The island was not full (around 75% occupancy) and that was perfect at meal times as there was no need to queue for anything and the whole atmosphere was very relaxed as a consequence - if the island had been full, I think the ambience at meal times would have been different.

Breakfast was very (disappointingly) European but when we mentioned this, the manager arranged for us to have a more traditional breakfast in keeping with our location ie curries, which were fantastic. The staff were excellent and really bent over backwards to help and please their guests. Indeed, every evening featured a selection of curries, and they were all excellent.

Drinks are expensive but very affordable in the happy hour - one strange thing, however, is that non alcoholic drinks are not part of happy hour eg mocktails or shakes.

The house reef was fantastic for snorkelling - we saw so many turtles and none were disturbed by us. One even swam up and nearly touched noses with us. We have also never seen so many fish. Again, the fish would swim up to you. Morray eels also featured.

All in all, an excellent experience - we would certainly come back but only to one of the over the water villas

Room Tip: Go for a water villa.

Our apologies for the bad start of the holiday bud we are delighted to read that the water villas where more to your liking. Yes, indeed, our house reef is amazing even we are amazed with the abundance of sea life on our reef. Thank you very much for all the feedback you have given us and we will certainly share this with the team. And we are very pleased to read that we where able to make some changes to the breakfast buffet so you could enjoy a more locale breakfast.

We look forward to welcome you back at Filitheyo soon We would love another opportunity to wow you!

Sunny regards from Filitheyo

We Stayed at the Filitheyo for a week in Mid November 2014, a 35 min seaplane transfer from Male. We stayed in the Water Villa 28 on the end of the line. wonderful views and access to the reef(exit 3)
The reef has a number of access points all marked - the reef is amazing with a drop off at access points. We saw a shark ( around 6 feet long) on oen snorkel! There so many differnt variityies of fish and the coral is colourful and plentyful . There are 2 wrecks between entry 4 and 5 ( a little away from the reef so best to have a guide to show you on a reef dice to start with).
Dive school was busy but very friendly and helpful, you can drive on the reef unguided (if qualified) anytime of day just let them know... They have two boats leave in the morning and two in the afternoon the blue is for more expereinced divers who go to the edge of the Atol (more current there) although qualified to advnced to stuck to the red boat which stays inside the Atol and they were great dive sites. This island is for those that dive or snorkel as to access the natural beauty here you need to be in the sea.
The rooms are fine I wouldnt stay they are to the standard of some of the other islands we have been to, there is so much they could do to improve without much cost, they had obviously spent money on certain things but then finished them badly. I had to clean the bathroom on arrival ! yes I am fussy so I do accept that. (keep an eye out for the toilet brushes! is all I will say.

Food wise you get the same table and waiter for your stay wich is a good idea and the buffet is fresh with choice, however after a week we had become a little fed up with buffets.

Prices are often mentioned in the Maldives - here it was $6 fora beer half of what we have paid elsewhere in the Maldives. Others have nmentioned paying for water, there was litres of water in our room for tea etc. more brought every eveneing and morning. If you asked for water in the bar or resurant yes you paid but thats no different to most islands in the Maldives.
Wifi was expensive and even if you paid it couldnt be accesed in your room only bar and reception area

Over all we had a great week with the reef making it for us, its a max 4* island the staff are freiendly and helpful but could thre litle details could be improved.

Room Tip: Water villas are worth the upgrade I wouldnt stay in a superior room at al,l the detached villa much better - East side current very strong

Dear Bebra,

Thank you very much for A remarkable review , and we loved reading every word of it! Thank you for taking the time to review your experience at Filitheyo on Trip Advisor.

Yes we pride our self on having one of the most amazing housereef in the Maldives we are working very closely with our dive team to preserve this amazing treasure that nature has given us.

Also thank you for the great feedback and some pointers, we will discus it with the team. In regards, to the small little touches we are currently planning a soft refurbishment set for this coming summer...

In regards, to the our wonderful buffet restaurant, we understand that sometimes we need a changes in environment and food choice how wonderful the food is , therefore we are having also a A la Cart restaurant with amazing sunset views, we would strongly advice to try it on your next visit to Filitheyo as the food is mouth watering.

Sunny regards from Filitheyo and hope to welcome you soon back.

We stayed 7 nights in Filitheyo Island Resort in mid November and we had high expectations before arriving to Maldives and this Island. We saved money during one year to convert our dreamy honeymoon into reality. Unfortunately there were 4 rainy days and inspite others experiences, the rain did not take 10-15 minutes, it's rain for hours, more than half a day without break, it was disappointment for us about Maldives, because its logo is "The sunny side of the world". It was "The rainy side of the world" for us. When you travel to Maldives, you should know that only paradise beaches and sun is the only one opportunitiy to enjoy and take advantage of this country. Fortunately Filitheyo Island has a great restaurant and bar, where there are lot of delicious and varied food and drink. Unfortunately our waiter was phlegmatic and not very helpful, no smile and it seems to us that he was terribly bored what to do. We could imagine a waiter with better mood. For example during our airplane trasfer from Male, we stopped at Lux Maldives, where the staff welcomed their guests with big smile and waving. So it can be do better. We were on all inclusive, which contained two excursions: night fishing and island hopping. Night fishing had been cancelled firstly due to bad and rainy wheather, secondly we went to the sea, but after 20 minutes we should go back to the island due to coming storm. The guest relation promised to the participants, that we can try it on next day, but we did not get further possibility to go to this program. We don't recommend this extra program. The island hopping was terrible with lot of mosquitos, although we used the necessary protection before this tour. The other island was very dirty and there were lot of trash, during the tour we were waiting for return to Island Resort. We don't recommend this excursion for pay.
As we were on our honeymoon we expected some extra services from the hotel, but we didn't get any special attention in this case. On this island there is no safe beach in the sea, because there are lot of dangerous fishes under the water and we felt that we are the only one couple on this island who are not divers.
We don't think, that we would travel again to this island and we would choose another destination in the world, where there is more sunshine. Maldives cost too much than it can give us. It has a very god marketing.

Room Tip: We had the room #49 superior. It was nice with good conditions in that, although after 2 days we didn't get new towels from room service. We should asked them from the reception as the used towels could not dried due to rainy weather. Superior rooms are on windy beach, deluxe rooms are on windless side of the island. There are some beautiful pictures with palms in the island's advertising, actually they died and they were covered in water. In the superior room you had no private atmosphere as you can hear your neighbour what they discuss or told or do.

Thank you very much for taking your time in writing a review on Trip Advisor for Filitheyo.

We are sorry to read that the weather did not cooperate during your vacationnand that it rained for 4 days however we hope that the remaining days of your vacation was filled with lots of sun and blue skies.

As you mentioned this is the "The sunny side of life" actually we here in the Maldives are blessed with great weather year round as well the some of the raining days, which we need other wise we would not have such a green and lush surroundings. But we understand that is is disappointing when you travel so fare and it rains however that is not in our control, as you know the weather is very unpredictable all over the world and that is the same for us her in the Maldives.

It is very disappointing to read that you found "there is no safe beach in the sea, because there are lot of dangerous fishes under the water". We are very blessed with wide sandy beaches and an amazing housereef with a abundance of aquatic life for all to enjoy and fortunately we do not have any fish that can endanger our guests in the lagoon. But it sadden us that you could not enjoy what makes the Maldives unique.

In addition, you mentioned that our resort is only for divers, it is true we have many guest who are diving but as well we have guest who are not divers and are offering many facilities that divers and non divers can enjoy, like the amazing Jungle Spa, great bars and dinning options, fishing, a extensive library, gym, etc.

Once again thank you for your candid review and have save save future travels.

Sunny regards,

Willem

Why? Because we have returned from our visit to Filitheyo Island on the 2nd November instead of 31st October.

And whose fault it is? - certainly not ours.
We were supposed to leave Filitheyo on the Thursday 30th October at 15.30, at least this was the departure time of our hidroplane according to the hotel. We were on time with all our guests who were avaiting for the boat to take us to the hidroplane.
It was 4pm when we saw the boat coming but returning, then 4.30pm when my husband started to be thinking there is something wrong here. So he walked to the receptionist.
He asked what the situation was, when the receptionist was saying simply: "No hidroplane transfer today" We were told later there is a storm in Male thus no more hidroplanes.

SO WE MISSED OUR FLIGHT THAT DAY

Let me ask how is this possible, that you are awaiting for the transfer, and the resort is not informing of something extreamly important. Why do you have to wait almost 2 hours to get this information? Why do YOU have to walk yourself to the reception to ask this question?

Anyway this was the begining of our horror story...

Firstly because we booked our trip and hidroplane through a travel agent and the plane ticket directly through arline ourself.
This turned out to be our unlucky situation, since we were let down, and left alone to resolve everything ourselves, and pay the extra cost of travelling home.
I certainly think it is not my fault that I could not get to Male and my view is that the resort should have been in touch with the hidroplane company and if necessary to change the timing of our flight. Or to arrange a boat transfer, any option to be offered, so that you can select the one more appropriate to you.
but we were not informed at all, had no option, no information of the situtation

I would have been happier if I were to leave earlier but get on time to the departure, rather than miss my flight. Why not the resort re-arrange offering these options, why they dont check the weather forecast?

As mentioned above the travel agent and the insurance company as well was saying this is vis major, and cannot help, so we had to organise ourself the trip back to home.
however there were no available seets the next day, neither the following only 3 days later.
We had to return back, since both myself and my husband we are working, so we were desparate to find a solution.
Many phones during the evening and no luck, so decided to to leave early morning to Male airport and try to resolve from there.
I did not want to stay any longer at the resort, I LOST ALL MY TRUST. Have to say due to the stress I could not eat, sleep that day...

and we were asked to PAY THE NIGHT in the resort. Whose fault is the whole story? and still we had to pay? Ridiculous, and we had no other options so we payed. (We thought if we are not paying the hidroplane wont take us to Male, and we were really desperate to leave the nightmare place)

Following day we were supposed to leave at 8.30, and finally left at 9.30 with the hidroplane. So my view is that you have to be careful, they are not punctual at all.

We got to Male, and from there we got a person Albert from Der tours who gave us a contact person who was arranging a ticket for us, but only for the following day and on our own cost. We slept at the airport, as had no trust going anywhere else. I lost all my trust in Maldives.
We came back, and we tried to claim the money from our travel agent, but the respond is NO.

Having had such a stress to arrive home, and the extra money it cost, I cannot think well of Filitheyo Island and Maldives any more. This was my 2nd trip to Maldive, but decided I will never return.

There were a few good things as well, but for me, it is still hard to remember the good ones:
(+) reef is beautiful. Snorkeling is amazing. We saw turtle, sting ray, manta ray, moray eel, lemon shark, many spieces of fish
(+) food is good, and the sushi is very fresh and nice
(+) island is clean, and they kept original, ie no sidewalk and you can walk with no shoes even to the restaurant
(-) room is spacious but the enterior is tired
(-) cats, crows, cockroach in the island . I even brought home a cockroach in the luggage home. Last great surprise from Filitheyo Island.
(o) Service is average

And yet I have not mentioned the arrival, when it was a storm, and our boat trip from hidroplane to island took 1 hour instead of 10 min, and in 3 m waves, when everyone on the boat though we will die.... We were not provided with any safety jacket either

So think twice, and consider that the resort is not taking any responsibility!

Room Tip: if you go to beach villa, try to get the room up till room nr 90.

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience at Filitheyo on Trip Advisor.

We regret to read your experience in regards to the Seaplane transfers and the not so good weather you where experiencing during your stay with us. Unfortunately due to the location of the Maldives and the resorts it can happen that due to adverse weather the seaplanes can't operate.

As you know the weather can be very unpredictable every where in the world and like every where else also here in the Maldives the weather can go from amazing to a storm in mater of minutes.

NO it is not your fault that the weather is bad and neither it is ours or the Seaplane Company or the Maldives. Trust us to stop Seaplane transfers is not a choice that TMA (the seaplane company) takes lightly however because due to the safety of all the passengers it would simply not be safe to fly.

And because, all of the resorts are located on there individual islands there is no other way to transfer our guest guest than by seaplane.

In regards, to the expenses related to re booking of the international flight, etc that is something unfortunately we cant held responsible for as this is not in our circle of influence and we would suggests to contact your travel agent or insurance

Beside the unfortunate circumstances of events we are happy to read that your enjoyed or breathtaking housereef and our culinary offerings.

we at Filitheyo are hoping that you will be back to the Maldives soon to enjoy what Maldives is known for as one of the most amazing destinations in the world where you can experience nature, solitude and great servce.

Sunny regards,

Willem

In one word Fab-u-lous, this was one of my must do's and it was well worth the wait, Paradise, sun, beautiful sand/beaches, clear sea where I snorkelled every day seeing so many fish, beautiful coral, met some beautiful people whilst on holiday from Germany and Switzerland.
The Island is covered in palms, there were birds and Bats- ( some say they were fruit bats some saying flying fox) either way they were so cute and fun to watch.
The beach Villa was spacious and clean, right by the sea, it was great sitting out on the veranda and hearing the sea. The shower was open aired fabulous showering either by moonlight or sunshine. we had a look at the water villas whilst we were there to sea if that would be our next stay but I have to say that although they are superb you would be a bit insular, Ideal for newly weds but not for sisters, I felt I had more space, freedom being in the beach villas.
Now the food was out of this world, everything is homemade, fresh and delicious, I can sometimes find eating abroad difficult but I have to say there was so much choice that I actually over ate for the first time, and the desserts are to die for.
The staff were absolutely marvellous from the moment we arrived until our departure, the gentleman in the shop astounded me when looking for a card to use as a make do Birthday card for a lady I had met on the island said if I returned in the afternoon he would try to get an actual birthday card which he did and he did not charge me for it, that worked well I visited a few times with my sisters to buy items. The staff in the restaurant were brilliant - all the chef were very friendly and our man Shafiu was very attentive and even knew when we needed more wine before we did, he could talk about the food we were eating and we always had a lovely welcome, morning, noon and night. Also the restaurant manager Rasika was very helpful when we had a slight problem with a table for our new found friends.
In the Bar the service and friendly welcome was just as Fab- Sendal, Reddi and Denish looked after our every need, morning , noon and night and in particular one very late night-
The staff just could not do enough for you- Sunsets and sunrises to marvel at and the peace and quiet is just heavenly- This Island is a must see destination- words just are not enough to describe it - you need to go to have the wonderful experience that I have just had with my Sisters

Room Tip: if you go for the 90-100 you get the biggest beach area
