“Big mistake... right time, wrong place -terrible hollidays”
Reviewed 28 August 2009

Sun Island (Maldives):
We decided to go there following the sugestion of some friends experience, some years ago...(Green Resort Award on 1999)
But surely there was a big change since then...
1st- Separation of the family on the transfer to the island (more than 2 hours waiting after a 13 hours journey.
2nd-one more hour waiting for rooms...
3rd-decoration of the rooms and restaurants- completely "demodée"- 70´ies- without any reformulation: quallity of the bath towells- some seem the cloths I clean my car...; "nylon" on the bed covers, etc...
4th- Timetable of the restaurants- breakfast closing at 9 o´clock(with half an hour of tolerance...)- on hollidays- wake up early...
5th- Facilities- TV with half a dozen programs- CNN, Sky, one russian and the others local -maldives/indian/arabs ( ESPN on pay TV...), noisy air conditioned, etc...
6th- Staff friendliness- the worst- after telling them that the beer tasted soap/chloride (because of the glasses...), they refused to keep on serving beer or wine...
and more... when my son brought out a sandwich rolled in a paper napkin, they pursuid ... and menace him with a 15 dollar bill... What we pay is not enough for a burguer...
7th-Food and drinks- lot´s of fried, greased & chilli "speciallities"...good for health...
You have to pay everything - even "courtesy" water... Alchool?...15 USD for a single whisky...
7th- Distance from the rooms to the restaurant- 600m-each way: no shuttle; the only "transfer" is by bike that you have to pay- 3,5 USD/day...
8th- Night entertainment/water sports- where?...poor one´s - top of week -"snail race!"...
When you want to complain there´s no one responsable- you can´t see who´s in charge.
So what I suggest is close the Hotel for remodelation, give formation to the staff and change the manager;
Meanwhile chose another destination....

We went on honeymoon to Sun Island. Aw, you just wouldn't believe this place - it is just my idea of heaven. We went in the rainy season and on the first day as we arrived in on our sea plane with the rain beating down, we looked at each other and said, just like home, in Northern Ireland. Within an hour, we were on the beach on a cloudy warm day and swimming in the lovely warm sea. It didn't matter if it rained because you were wet anyway. The rain is really quite enjoyable as it's so warm there. As the days went on, it got hotter. The rain was tumultuous at night but very enjoyable and we had lots of fun riding home after a night out giggling in the floods of water coming down on you. Your clothes dry out overnight.

We had a bungalow on the edge of the beach. You come out of your back patio doors onto a palm tree covered beach and have a private area shared with just a handful of others who aren't always there. We loved our outdoor shower which was obviously very private

For the first time, I swam with sharks and stingrays. Sounds absolutely terrifying and believe you me, I'm the biggest coward when it comes to things like that - I also have a fear of swimming underwater. By the end of two weeks I was swimming with the best of them, looking for sharks and other fish. The fish are just amazing there - there are thousands around you - you just wouldn't believe it until you see it - all colours, shapes, types. The sharks don't touch you - they just swim past. I think the largest I saw whilst swimming was about ten feet long but the bigger ones come in at night for feeding at the restaurant at the end of the peer.

I think I got bitten once by some kind of insect and usually I get attacked by mosquitos. There are rather large ants on the beach but you just walk round them. We saw one funny white spider.

The food in the restaurant is absolutely out of this world and the staff are incredible. We ate so much and the fruit isoutstanding. The whole place is just a complete worktank of people constantly busying themselves in the gardens, the hotel, the bungalows. They smile all the time and are just lovely.

We hired out a bicycle every day as that's the main method of travel on the island. It's quite cheap and means you can get round the island easily. If you have mobility problems, then you need to ask for a accommodation near the hotel as ours was a good bit away from it.

This is by far the best holiday we have ever been on and would say it is 5* (at least it's better than any 5* hotel we've ever stayed inat home or in other countries). Entertainment is a bit lacking but to be honest you don't really care. There is one band which is brilliant - a girl sings on it and she has an incredible voice. They also do a karaoke which is a bit tacky but just the usual. We would recommend going all-inclusive here as you don't have to think about anything then.

Definitely good for honeymooners and a peaceful island holiday. Don't expect to go clubbing or you'll be disappointed. Also, don't listen to people who say you don't need to wear shoes - you do, as there are ants about. There are also walkways the whole way round the island - you just use them the way you would use pathways at home. People also dress fully for meals and evening entertainment, but it's not clubber type gear. There is only a few shops with not a lot to buy in them, so don't expect much from your shopping trips and take everything with you that you need.

We had great fun with the canoes and watersports. There is a beach bar at one end of the island where you can choose from lots of things.

If you're going, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. We would give anything to go back again. It's a long journey at 24 hours from Northern Ireland but well worth the wait. - it's just paradise.

As my wife and i have both been travel agents for 17 years and this was our honeymoon you can imagine the amount of research that we both put in planning our honeymoon, we looked at lots of options but decided that Sun Island would be a good choice so hopefully rhis report will help you to make your mind up on this resort. We flew Monarch and upgraded to the premium srevice, it was good not bad leg room and the IF entertasinment was good, lots to eat and drink and was worth the money.Sea plane transfer a must as the speedboat takes around 2 and a half hours, seaplane is around 25 mins.We booked a deluxe ocean view room,it was nice and spacious with an outside shower, walk outside back of room and right onto a lovely beach area, a good choice. The most common complaint about this hotel is the AI board basis, here is a guide to what its all about, you are given a wristband upon arrival, you can drink in the main bar, the swim up pool bar and the beach bar, you have a choice of 4 beers including botlles of becks, you can have white , red and rose wine, there is quite a few rums to choose from and whisky and vodka are also on the AI, mixers are included on the AI.At meal times in the main resteraunt you can have tea/coffe, water, soft drinks and beer or wine by the glass. There is absolutely no need to go without a drink whether it be a soft drink in the daytime on the beach or a drink in one of the bars at night, the key to remember is that this is not the Caribbean and therefore some restrictions on AI will be in force, for example the mini bar in the rooms are not included but i think if you know this in advance there should be no problem.
FOOD - never made breakfast that often but usual choice of fruit , cold meats, varios curries!!??!!, had some really nice omlettes from the egg chefs, lunch was always a good choice and there was always something that we liked, dinner was good but was disappointed with the curries, there was too many veggi options and not enough meat curries for our liking but that was just our opinion. We dined at the Italian twice in the two weeks we were there and both times it was good, remember to get your discount voucher from your waiter in the main resteraunt the night before you go to one of the speciality resteraunts, food isnt too expensive but watch the price of the wine.
Overall opinion was that the food was of a good standard and plentiful.
As this is a tipping island i would recommend that you tip well the first couple of days, give the waiter in the reteraunt $10 and he will look after you, this is the same with the waiter in the bar give him $10 to start with and slip him a couple of dollars each night thereafter and he will make sure your glass is never empty(nassem was our waiter and he was very good). We were told by the Thomas Cook rep that if you are nice to the staff they will be nice to you, like anything in life treat people the way you would like to be treated and all will be fine.
If you are on your honeymoon i would recommend the Couples Massage in the Spa , butt naked but your on honeymoon so lie back and enjoy!!!!

Negatives - not too many but the pool definetly needs to be closed and resurfaced, the water sports equipment were all out of order during our two week stay, not enough meat curries or shellfish.

In my opinion this is a great Island with plenty of things to keep you occupied and lets not forget the most amazing weather , beaches and turquoise luke warm waters of the Indian Ocean is way its classed as PARADISE.

I spent five days in August 2009 with my two sons and three more families in a total of 15 people.
We chose de "Super DeLuxe" bungallows. The rooms are not DeLuxe and may be compared to a 3 star residential ( whith a bad decoration) They don't offer water, and the tea&coffee set cost $8,50 USD. The restaurant was very far from the rooms and the only fast way to go from one place to another was with bikes which cost $3,50 USD/day. When it rained despite there being buggies that were not being used at the time transportation was not facilitated. However the biggest problem was the staff that was often impolite, slow, and most of the times unavailable. To top it off, when the manager was requested he was nowhere to be found and didn't even show himself once during our stay. Sun Island never again...

We flew from Kuwait into Dubai then down to the Maldives using Emirates; as usual the service was excellent and the in flight entertainment was spot on. We then transferred to the island by sea plane, well worth the extra cost as the views are spectacular.

Initially we stayed in a Super Deluxe beach villa these rooms were ok but nothing special, however the location of the rooms on the beach was superb, however, we decided to upgrade our second week to a water bungalow, this cost us an extra £100.00 per night but we thought was well worth it, the only annoying thing was that you were charged for tea and coffee in the room which is normally a given in any hotel.

We had opted for an all inclusive package but beware this all inclusive is not the same as we had experienced in other resorts around the world in fact it was the most restrictive I had experienced... No drinks in the mini bar in the room, no cocktails, drinks not available in certain bars or restaurants, this was the only real annoyance of the holiday and the fact that you could not get a drink from the bar you, had to order them through your waiter, and they never brought you a drink unless you had finished the one you were drinking!!

We have a 16 year old and a 7 year old and there was enough to do in the resort to keep them occupied most of the time, the main criticism was that other than going to the Italian Specialty restaurant for a Pizza there was little in the way of child friendly food, no chip's or chicken nuggets etc, etc, my little girl lived on rice and pasta for most of the holiday lol. That said the food in the restaurant although buffet based was of a good standard.

We ate out in the Italian and Thai restaurants, again the food was good but expensive; food for 2 adults and 2 Children gave little change out of $150.00 with a bottle of wine at averaging at $50-60.00. Soft drinks were $5.00 beers $7.50, and branded spirits $12 - 15.00, so as you can imagine it was not cheap to eat out...

The pool was another disappointment, in that it was set in an idyllic location but in desperate need of some maintenance, however, the beaches and reefs around the island were fantastic.

We used the spa several times and this was reasonably priced for the services offered.

In summary the Island was beautiful, the facilities in general were above average, the staff great, in some areas the resort needed sprucing up, but overall still a good place to stay, just beware if there is a way of charging you for something they will!

We would consider going there again...

After a fantastic flight in a seaplane we arrived on Sun Island to wait at least 1 hour for our room. The villas are well isolated and confortable. Best to hire a bike to get around the Island is big and the sun is strong. The food is great beware of the curries HOT!!! Staff friendly rooms serviced 2 a day. snorkeling brilliant no need to use bottles.Extras a bit expensive, but they ilmport so it's understandable. I don't think the all inclusive is worth it I took beers wine at dinner and water daily without breaking the bank; less than the price of all inclucive. If you want a great beach holiday to relax this is the place .

Beautiful idilic romatic island ideal for couple or if you want to bring some romance back into your life. I saw a few people moan on here before don't know why I'm fussy saw no bird in rest..no rats...staff were all lovely....However

Tips you have to go ALL INCLUSIVE I don't drink that much but $5 for a small coke $5 for a becks,$30 for a jaccuzi, $20 for badminton, $50 tennis hire $60 a couple to go on an island trip $30 Movies for a week that's ALL FREE on ALL IN. Don't bring kids nothing for them to do except cycle or swim. I run a lot and there is a 2 mile route around the island plus if you include water bungalows and other pier it's over 3 miles. Just in 90% humidity. Never used Gym but it looked really good 4 treadmills, X trainers and weights with music and tv. Loved the free films saw loads of good ones.

Staff very friendly I was up front with waiter said I'll tip you at end if your a good boy :). Bar service very good always there gave like $2 a night very happy with that, cocktails nice not AI though about $12 (20% discount on cocktail for day). No real entertainment except crab racing, Karoke once a week, Disco twice. Then again I made my own entertainment ;). Spa was lovely about $70 for massage recommend the Lobbi Lobbi romance one with simultanious massage 1 hour and 30 mins naked bath very liberal lol.

My place was near sea as I asked for sea view just about a mile from Restaraunt me and GF very fit not a prob if your older not so good so you need to ask for Pool view. Went to Thai rest which is 25% off food for AI nice as a treat a little pricey but really lovely not worth doing romantic special ($250) it was good enough for $100 had place to ourselves !!! waiter a bit of wet fish though yes I can serve myself thank you. Enjoyed it even though rainy season I'd love to go back one day thoughly recommend it. Photos to follow
