“Another great vacation at this resort.”
Reviewed 28 March 2013

This was our second trip to this resort, and we loved it as much as the first time.We were there March 16 to 23rd, met some great people from Ottawa, Toronto and Halifax.
Now for the resort, if you want a nice peaceful and relaxed atmosphere you should try this resort, the food is great your butlers will setup your reservations, you have 3 restaurants to choose from, and the buffet for breakfast is fantastic.
Our butler Joel set up dinner for us in our room on our last night and it was over the top, nice bubble bath, table set for 2, wine and a special meal were the best and he even had one of the Cuban singers come by and sing to us, it was truly amazing, I hope to have him as our bultler when we return next year because he was really the best. Thanks again Joel!
The pool bar staff Orestes and Osmany were once again fantastic always making sure you had everything you needed, always happy to talk to you.
The gardeners are very busy and also very happy to see every one, even found out this time that one of the workers does Thia Chi on the beach if you want every morning, this was neat to see.
The snorkling is absolutely amazing, take your own gear though I don't beleive they have any at the resort anymore, if you get a chance get the life guard from the beach bar to take you out, you will be blown away by the way he dives down to flush fish out for you to see.
Some things have changed since last year but it is still a "Little piece of Heaven"
Thanks again Ernesto for the beautiful room you gave us 0822 on sunset beach.

Room Tip: Ifyou can get a room on the sunset beach side you will be amazed.

My husband and I spent a week at the Melia Buenavista in mid-March. After doing the research and reading many reviews we chose this resort and for the most part, were not disappointed. We loved the tranquility of this place and really were able to relax. We never felt crowded, as you sometimes do at larger resorts.

When we arrived, we met our butler who gave us some initial information about the hotel and restaurants and then suggested we go for lunch as our room was not quite ready. After lunch, we returned to the lobby for our tour, but the butler did not show so we explored the hotel on our own which we really didn't mind. To be honest, after booking our dinners (do this on the first day), over the course of our stay, we really didn't have a need for the butlers. Both were friendly and offered their advice and assistance, but as most of our time was spent enjoying the outdoors, luxuries like the hot bath and turn down service were not necessary for us.

The snorkelling was great, particularly off the centre beach. If you walk down the sunset beach at low tide, look for starfish and sand dollars in the shallow waters. Water shoes make for a more comfortable walk! The beach to the east of the resort is the best for swimming. Snorkelling is okay here. Both pools are lovely, however the main pool is where the action is. People did reserve loungers in the morning, so finding free chairs was hit or miss depending on the day, but we were happy to sit by the other pool. Towel service at the main pool was not great, twice they were not available upon request.

We did love the energy of the employees at this resort. Orestes and Osmany, the two outdoor bartenders, were fantastic! They never seemed to take a break, yet had the most amazing sense of humour. Brought our drinks to us before we had even asked for refills! At breakfast, we always looked for Junior. He never failed to give us prompt service and made great cappucinos! Katerina at Los Navegantes and Ayineris at Los Caribes were also wonderful. They made sure our dinners were enjoyable.

The food at this resort was terrific and we didn't mind the some of the set options on the menus, but we are not picky eaters. We tried to savour as much seafood as possible! Do not miss the Cuban nights - great local food and music. We looked forward to the bbq lunch everyday at the main pool.

Overall, we were very satisfied with the resort and enjoyed a relaxing time away. It is important to do the research to determine whether this is the right place for you. If we ever return to Cuba, we would stay at this place again.

My husband and I stayed at the Melia Buenavista from March 16-23rd. We both have mixed feelings about this hotel; lots of good things but equal issues too.

When we arrived, the front desk seemed very disorganized and we felt like we were in the way. We were handed a package but not told what to do with it and asked to sit down off to the side. We were eventually shown to our room by our first butler and given a quick review of the location of the restaurants, spa and pools. We did not, however, receive what we feel was important information regarding the restaurants. We were only shown 2 of the 3 restaurants and so we didn't know dinner was available at another restaurant until 2 days into our visit. We were also not told that one of the restaurants was booked by an outside group mid-week. This wasn't a big deal but it would have been nice to know ahead of time. We would have also liked to know that there was no choice of food at dinner. We were handed a menu which listed the appetizer, soup, choice of 2 entrees and dessert. Again, this wouldn't be as big of a deal if each restaurant posted their menu in the morning so you could at least choose between restaurants. We were not expecting fabulous food, as we have heard Cuba is not known for their cuisine. However, the food was grossly oversalted and I found the oil they cook with quite nauseating. Breakfast was the best meal of the day (no real complaints), lunch was acceptable but dinners were certainly an issue (with the exception of Cuban night and Los Caribes; the chicken was really yummy that night!)

Our first butler also didn't tell us that the "room service card" that was kept beside the door turned the power to the entire room off when removed from its slot. This would have been nice to know. She also didn't show up to work one day and by the time we figured this out and went to the front desk to make our dinner reservation, most of the restaurants were booked and so we had to take the restaurant and time that was left over. Our second butler was fabulous - very apporoachable, knowledgable and couldn't do enough for us.
Our room key cards stopped working three times throughout the week. All three times the problem was fixed immediately but it was a little annoying.

Despite the above issues, there were certainly great points about the Melia too. The pools were beautiful, the people working at the bars and restaurants were great (very friendly and always trying to help). The aquafit instructor was really good and I thought the class was lots of fun! The beaches were fabulous! Snorkelling was out of this World. Clarnet (I appologize if I've spelled his name wrong), took us out to the middle beach one day and showed us an amazing reef with fantastic fish - just like being in an aquarium! We snorkelled 4 times that week and each time was exceptional! Because of the reef, there isn't great swimming directly in front of the resort, however just a 5 minute walk from the resort you can pretty much have a private beach with a beautiful sandy bottom. There was always enough chairs and shady spots both at the pool and the beach. And the sunsets from our room were fantastic! There wasn't a saxaphone player everynight but we had champagne 2/7 nights and the sax player 1/7 (very nice).

We went to the Carnival in town Monday night. I wouldn't recommend this. Aside from some Cuban music you can have an equally enjoyable time at the resort. I strongly recommend purchasing water shoes as they come in handy when walking the beaches.

Overall, we had a nice time in Cuba but would not visit the Melia Buenavista again.

Room Tip: I recommend a second floor room on the Sunset beach. It's quieter here and the views are great!

Receive our most respectful greeting from sunny Cuba.
We heartily appreciate you honest review. We understand some of our services did not exactly meet all your expectations but we thank your giving us the chance to identify these improvement opportunities. Our guests’ comments are well taken into consideration since they help us to improve our performance in all areas.
Being our staff our most appreciated resource, we have had them focused in a more efficient communication both, among different departments of our resort and between our guests and the hotel staff and management. So far, it has brought about some good results in terms of guests’ satisfaction.
It will always be a pleasure to welcome you at Melia Buenavista and serve you as our guests.

Fourth trip to Cuba in almost as many years, thinking this resort would be the pinnacle of our trips there. A frigid bus ride to the resort was a bit of a precursor to how our week would go at the Buenavista. Check-in was without a hitch, though those chairs were certainly made for little people or those without any impairments. The room was very nice, however former tenants had left some personal things behind that the cleaning staff had obviously missed. We liked the outdoor showers but we would advise caution when stepping down onto the tile with wet feet, that really hurt!

Room service was dismal, the fish was delivered uncooked, burger rare and took as long as 2.5 hours. We certainly would have appreciated a bottle of wine or rum that other guest have received.

The breakfast buffet was adequate, though I did not appreciate having to fight the flies for my meals there.

Beach beds? were in disrepair and not much better than the plastic lounges used at the other resorts. We were looking forward to the hammocks but alas they were sagged out and rather narrow.

The beaches were nice and snorkeling off the east beach was great. The sunset view from the west beach was very nice though the sax player that arrived there every evening prefers to play notes and scales.

Lots of little things were missed, not what you should expect from a resort that has only 105 rooms and is rated #2 in the area. The one saving grace was the fresh coconuts that the gardeners offered to those who were on the west beach.

We have been to Cuba 5 times and other islands and resorts. I believe this is important so you know that I have something to compare it to. I love Cuba and its people. They have an energy and pride about them that entices me to keep coming back.
Food
We are very much aware of the food situation here in Cuba in terms of “boring, tasteless” so let’s get that out of the way 1st…The food at this resort and spa was terrific! I enjoyed their soups very much. I loved that the portions were small and therefore saved on wasting. If you want more of what you just had, just ask, they will bring it to you.
Tip:
1. Book your dinners right away on the 1st day with your butler, that way you can relax without worrying about as there are no buffets here.( a welcome sight for me)
2. Do the room service Breakfast: Book your Breakfasts with your butler as well. Tell him the time you want to BF served and they will bring it in your room at that time, rather than call it in on that day as some people said that they waited a long time when they ordered BF room service the morning of.
3. Get the romantic dinner in your room. Your butler will help arrange that for you.
4. If you like seafood you’re in heaven here. Fresh shrimp, lobster tails, OMG the Salmon Rocked my world! If you’re not a seafood lover there are many other choices of beef or chicken, so you should be OK.
5. DO, do the Cuban night!! The band is awesome!!

Service
Use your butler people!! That’s what he’s there for! He will do his very best to get you what you need. If you want more beer in your fridge, leave a little tip in there with a note asking for what you would like. We aren’t big for staying up late at the bar, so we would order champagne or wine in our room for the evening. ( we tipped our butler at the end of the week rather than on going)

Prime seating is difficult to get no matter where you go, especially if you’re a late riser. Get your butler to book you a seat…provided you’re going to use it. We were in bed early most nights so were also up early so we didn’t have an issue with having the space we wanted.

When you get to the resort there is not a big counter and line up…they sit you down in a comfy chair and bring you your documents and paper work. They bring you a refreshing mojito (no alcohol) and help with your check in. (Loved the personal touch at this resort)

Your butler will give you a personal tour of your resort, taking his time and answering any questions you might have.

By day 2 the butler would come and ask how things are, the staff all know what you like in terms of drink or food.

The second I stepped food on this resort I was able to relax. The mood and energy of this resort/spa, is just that… Tranquility….ahhhhh

Use the turn down service and ask your butler to run you a beautiful hot bath in terms of what time you would like it, when you get home you will have the sweetest surprise awaiting you

Pools
2 pools
1 quiet pool (no bar tender) and the regular pool. The regular pool has spa/meditation music playing most of the day. Very relaxing and calming.
The atmosphere was serenity. No drunk loud people at all!

Beaches
3 beaches- the resorts own private snorkeling beach, nude beach and other beach. Terrific service!! Sun set with sax player and champagne are highly recommended.

Spa
Packages were a bit high in price but well worth it. The spa accommodates couples very easily. Small spa but very clean and many services.

This trip was meant to relax and unplug for us. This is exactly what it helped us achieve. Thanks so much to all the staff and wonderful service for getting us there. We will be back.
Thanks so much for your hospitality!!

Hubby and I spent a glorious 2 weeks here, and was our second trip to Santa Clara,Cuba..We arrived in the dark after the dreaded 2.5 hour bus ride.
Our room was a welcome site after the travel, We had a nice bottle of red wine and snacks waiting for us.( thanks Ernesto:)..) and the view from the oceanside suite in the morning was awesome. The suite was very large with a huge kingsize bed, walk in closet zacuzzi tub, and outdoor shower.( some folks didn't like that.. but you really can't see much...and the advert for the resort clearly tells travelers about the shower...) We sat on the patio some evenings as we had a view from here , with some nice red wine..ask for the chilean
This resort has three beaches..the sunset beach which you have to see to believe, and everynight they have a ritual with a guy playing his Sax as the sun goes down, while you sip champagne.. there is a second beach whick is a bit more windy, but beautiful,..and a beach for the more extraverted folks out there..(sans clothes..) :) this beach has the best snorkeling, loads or different types of fish.

There are three restaurants ,a piano bar.." which gets rockin" and an available BBQ at the pool for lunch. Most days we had lunch at los caribe, where Larzaro attended to us the whole time we were there He has two cute kids, and lights up when he speaks of them. He works alone at lunch so don't be in a rush. At night we ate as Los Navigatos where the wait staff was so welcoming.. we ate alot of steak.( don't forget to have your butler make reservations for you) Micheal and Alein were great Menus do not vary that much, so be prepaired for that.. but the food as awesome and you can have as much as you want just ask..I have to say that what i missed most was a salad.( a small salad bar here would be great). Breakfast was good , you can order a fresh omlette, or have a small buffet. The hot trays could have been kept hotter.
This resort is attached to two other Melia resorts close by if you are craving more variety simply take the shuttle van to Melia Las Dunas, where you wlll find a huge buffet, but remember that llas dunas is a huge resort, and very noisy. Where the beunavista is so nice a quiet.. It's for couples.. After a visit at las dunas we returned to our resort by a taxi instead.. just for the experience. We had a 1952 Chevy, and on our last day there we went again and returned in a 1930 Ford with the Rumble seat in the back.. where we were sitting of course.. loads of fun

there are lots of loungers by the pool, and if you need a huge umbrella.. then the pool boy is not hard on the eyes. Bartenders not bad either..(I am am married .. not buried..)

The spa is small, but adequate. We had a couples hot stone massage..

Oh, and the Cappuccino...AMAZING.. add some ameretto and it's even more amazing..
We would love to go back here..
Pics will be posted soon.....

My wife and I recently returned from Melia Buenavista, it was our first trip back to Cuba in 15 years. We have experienced Mexico ( Mayan Riveria--multiple resorts, Nuevo Vallarta) and the Dominican Republic ( Punta Cana, La Romana and Puerto Plata) and agreed we would give it another try. We were so glad we did!

The resort is very small and therefore staff get to know you and speak daily in a friendly way. You could do as much or as little as you like while you were there. Most guests kept to themselves as they are there to relax but conversations were always to be had if you wanted. Lots of space between people at the beach and at the pool--everyone had there own personal space and if you want to move elsewhere, someone was close by to carry your lounger for you.

After reading some other reviews - we experienced the exact opposite. No towel game issue, we never had a problem with finding seats, yes people may leave for lunch or a walk, but never did we see them unused for large portions of day.

Orestes and Osmany were the greatest bartenders and hardest working guys you could meet. Always attentive and bringing drinks or food upon request and many times without--they just arrived drinks in hand and a smile on their face!! Thin crust wood fired pizza were awesome! No tables by the pool--who cares!!! The fact they run it right to you is enjoyable enough--if you need a table you could move to outdoor bar area.

The room was as large as we have experienced in any resort--outdoor shower was a very cool experience.

Beach areas all had their own appeal depending on what you cared to do or not to do!

We experienced both very calm and windy days. The windy days provided quite the natural show with the waves crashing over the coral islands that are just in front of resort.

Snorkelling was fabulous just in front of main beach or the middle beach ( water shoes are needed to truly enjoy) and we actually saw dolphins going by out in front of middle beach jumping out of the surf as they went

Food selection although not as plentiful as other resorts we have been to ( which were much bigger) was sufficient ( eggs, pancakes, bacon, cheeses, fruits, pastries--coffee, fresh juices--for breakfast) Lunches could be menu items from one of two places or pool side BBQ, which included burgers, various Kabobs, with sauces, Roast beef, Paella, and even Lobster tails!--and the dinners were all quite tasty ( no not just for Cuba--in general) but again choices were limited-usually a few entree choices- one which was fish or seafood. We brought a few home comforts - salad dressing etc... and used them only once.

Butler service was a nice touch but not over the top, basically they were the middle man if you needed something. Dinner reservations, a bottle of champagne in the room, room service or just simple inquiries they could always be found or called from the front desk.

We did visit the other Melia resorts to see what they were like and found our experience at the Buenavista to be much more enjoyable--no crowds, no noise!---but that is what we went for. Some people we met did eat at other resorts and had mixed reviews--again personal preference.

Yes, it was a long drive from airport, which we knew prior but was well worth it and complaining about should not slight the experience of the resort. If you dont want to travel that far - dont go--pretty simple.

If you do choose to go, you should not be disappointed!

Rest Relax Recoupe Regenerate were all things we were able to do with some wonderful people!
