“Very nice”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 September 2013

We have been frequent visitors to Cuba for the past eighteen years. During that time, we have seen numerous improvements in what Cuba's resorts have to offer visitors: the Melia Buenavista is one example of why these continuous improvements are attracting more visitors and drawing accolades in reviews.

Recent reviewers have done an excellent job of describing the physical attractions and benefits of the Buenavista: it is unnecessary for me to repeat them. I do, however, hope to provide some different insights which will encourage prospective future clients to actually stay at the hotel.

A small, adults only resort such as the Buenavista is obviously designed to appeal to a limited, but demanding clientele. Being relatively new (less than four years old) it is still in the process of acquiring a reputation which, in our opinion, it already richly deserves.

While we were there, the hotel was less than half full. The age range of these clients was broad: from mid-twenties to late sixties. Visitors from Russia, Brazil, Argentina, the United States, Spain and Canada were evident. Just as evident was the fact that despite their differences, all were looking for essentially, the same experience ... a small, intimate resort set in a beautiful surrounding which offered outstanding service.

From our arrival, through to our departure, the service from the staff we encountered was excellent.

First impressions are critically important: the welcome in the Buenavista lobby was comforting. One immediately knew that this was a place where service and concern for the clients needs/wishes was paramount. You just "knew" that you had made the right choice in coming to this property. The week which followed magnified that belief.

A beautiful natural setting, intimacy, an attractive physical component, very, very good food, a diverse interesting, clientele and excellent service: the Buenavista has it all. I would be remiss, however, if I did not include one last thought on why this hotel is as good as it is.

Service from front line staff is critical in the service industry. Having the latter does not happen in isolation. Management must, in my opinion, ensure that staff must buy into the belief that service is the foundation of any success.

The manager of the Melia Buenavista, Jaume Vilardell i Margarit is relatively new to his position. He is, however a natural leader. A positive, enthusiastic visionary he doesn't simply delegate service to his staff ... he leads by example.

He is constantly out and about the resort, greeting clients, asking them for positive and negative feedback and, when necessary, taking the steps to rectify concerns. He respects the Cuban employees. He knows when to praise and when to prod. His commitment to excellence is obvious to the staff: they have embraced that commitment and are doing their best to ensure that the goal is achieved.

Jaume's management team has also embraced his values. Ana, in quality control, cordially and calmly dealt with a minor request we had. Her prompt and efficient response was, as well as a testimony to her excellence, another example of the fact that service is paramount at the Buenavista.

We feel fortunate indeed to have visited the Melia Buenavista. We highly recommend it to those who are new to Cuba and those who have visited the island many times. We hope and believe that your experience will be similar to ours and so many other reviewers on this sight who have had the privilege of staying here.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 September 2013

My husband and I had such an enjoyable time at the Melia Buenavista in April of 2013 that we returned at the end of August for another week. Having been to Cuba numerous times and staying at some excellent hotels, we can say that we truly loved the Melia Buenavista. This has become one of our favorites.

The location although 90 minutes from the airport in Santa Clara is absolutely amazing with three beaches each located at the west, north and east points of the resort. It is a small, intimate, adults only hotel with 2 great pools, luxurious rooms, personalized service, and 24 hour lobby bar and a la carte room service.

We had Edel and Gerardo again as our butlers and they were both wonderfully attentive. Usually upon arrival you are greeted with a cool beverage and towel by either one of your butlers; depending on who is working that day. For us, it just happened to be Gerardo, when he saw us he knew us immediately from our earlier stay in April. If you need something, all you just need to do is ask them. We were greeted by one of them every morning at breakfast where they took our dinner/restaurant request for that evenings' seating and even surprised us with a romantic bath one day for us along with a bottle of champagne. They were the best and were constantly checking to see if we needed anything.

YOUR ROOM - We enjoyed an oceanview lower level suite with private balcony which had a balinese bed and a small bistro set. You step from the balcony into the sunken living area which leads you to a step up to a king bed with a flat screen T.V. Also in the living area is a well stocked mini bar which is attended to each day. Just let your butler know if you have any special request regarding what you want -- a bottle of wine, champagne, etc. left in your room for when you return from the beach or pool to enjoy before dinner. The dressing area includes a walk-in closet containing the in-room safe and separate sink/make-up area. The washroom area has an amazing Jacuzzi tub and separate toilet/bidet room; which leads to the outdoor shower. The Balinese shower may not appear to be private but it is and you will thoroughly enjoy it.

RESTAURANTS - There are two a la carte restaurants for dinner. One is the Los Caribes that rotates its menu on a nightly basis and the other is the Los Navegantes which has a set menu. You are always treated to a nice basket of warm bread while you are waiting for your entre. We found that we preferred the Chilean wine. You do have the option of dining at their sister hotels. We didn't feel the need to go off property.

There is a restaurant near the beach entrance -Ranchon Los Marinos; although small is open only in the mornings and at lunch – it is a la carte but also offer a small mini buffet of extras and they will try to accommodate any requests. I have to give a special shout out to Yunior who became our favourite waiter. He always had our table ready and surprised me with something delightful and delicious everyday at lunch without me asking -- he truly went above and beyond the call of duty.

(Yunior: I hope your wife and children are doing fine.)

There is a daily barbeque at the main pool which is quite good. It is open for lunch only. They have a cook grilling meat, fish and vegetables if available. You can also order food poolside such as pizza, club sandwiches, shrimp, burgers from the very entertaining pool bartenders Oreste and Osmandy who come around to take your drink orders.

BARS - The Lobby/Piano bar was stocked with some choices of premium brand liquors and imported beers. Kudos to bartenders - Yaneila & Noa who made the best Cappuccinos which we sipped on every evening while we played cards in the bar whilst enjoying the evenings' entertainment; performed beautifully by various local talents (singers, pianist, guitarist and violinist) who also sometimes entertained during dinner.

The beach bar was run by Ruiz. He remembered my husband from our previous stay without my husband saying anything. He was very attentive to our needs. It is a fantastic place to sit and take in the great ocean view. Like the pool you can also order food brought to you on the beach. The pool bar as I said above is first rate. The pool bartenders Oreste and Osmandy are so friendly. These guys do a fantastic job at making your day fun and relaxing.

(Oreste: I hope you enjoyed the Motts Clamato and beer after we left.)

BEACHES - The water at each of the three beaches is crystal clear such that you can see the bottom as well as the many different fish which swim around you -- remember to take bread with you to get the full effect. For some great snorkeling, I would recommend bringing your own gear. You won't be disappointed. The main beach is very expansive and won't disappoint if you like to take long walks. You will not have difficulty finding a palapa. Ruiz will keep you well hydrated with whatever you want. The entire staff is very friendly and will do everything to make your stay enjoyable.

At sunset you are beautifully entertained by a solo saxophone player. In April the sunset performance is at the west beach, near the spa and where they have erected a lovely pier where they hold morning yoga sessions. In August the location changes to the north beach near the main pool.

YHI SPA - We enjoyed a couple's massage at the Spa. The staff was very friendly and professional.

The property was very well kept. We mentioned that we could not see the ocean for the bushes from our balcony, and the next day one of the many gardeners (Armando) was there cutting them back to open up the view. He was very friendly and amiable and always greeted you with a smile in the morning.

Staff on the front desk always tried to help to the best of their abilities. A special note to Yami who was ever so helpful and tried her best to accommodate us. We got to know the old manager Ernesto Osuna Lopez in April, he was always working around the property to make the resort the best that it could be and was doing a great job of it. We met the new manager Jaume on the night we arrived who is continuing to do the same as his predecessor. He was so genial and exuberant in the plans he had for the resort. Throughout our stay he always acknowledged us and even changed one of the specialty nights for us so we wouldn't miss it (Spanish night). We also especially like the special dinner for return guests which was hosted by Jaume and Ana (Service Quality Rep). Ana was also very helpful and informative.

Again, we would like to thank Jaume Vilardell i Margarit and all his staff (wait staff, bartenders, gardners, butlers, front desk, housekeeping, spa) for making this vacation a memorable and relaxing one where we didn't want to go home but making us want to come back-- which we will and maybe bring some friends with us.

Bien adiós Amigos hasta que le veamos otra vez

Sandy & Bruce

We highly recommend this hotel; if you are looking for a small, intimate, adults only hotel with 2 great pools, luxurious rooms, personalized service, and 24 hour lobby bar and a la carte room service.

If you’re going on vacation on Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba, Melia Buenavista is my choice hotel as long as you’re not travelling with children.

Buenavista was a magical vacation for us the last week of August 2013. The staff is wonderful, the resort is like paradise, the weather was superb, and the food is second to none. It’s my first of many trips to Buenavista, Cayo Santa Maria.

Favourite things:

-Walking along the beach to visit the two other nearby resorts where, as long as you're a Buenavista guest, you can freely enjoy the beach, bars, pools, and restaurants. It was like staying at three resorts!

-Having the chance to get to know some of the staff at Buenavista was really nice. :)

-This resort is so quiet and so relaxing and that really did it for us!! :-)) The grounds, room, pools, spa, restaurants/food, beaches and everything else is a 5-star in our book!

Beaches beautiful, service and staff amazing. Rooms were outstanding and very clean. Champagne at sunset was romantic and peaceful. Friendly lizards frequently visited the outdoor private shower area, which was unique and an amazing experience.

Food fresh and varied and even pool bar BBQ between meals.

Traveled June 2012.

Room Tip: Ask for a beach view if possible they are spectacular.

This place is amazing. From the staff to the rooms, beaches, restaurants, grounds. Everything was perfection. If you are looking for a couples chilled out luxury experience, then look no further. Its the little details that make this destination so special. Nothing is too much trouble. My partner is Vegetarian and a very strict one at that. The staff catered for her every need, trying to outdo themselves every day. Absolutely fantastic. Manager on site most of the day chatting to guests, ensuring everything was perfect for them. Brilliant!!

This hotel is a true 5 star experience. I was initially afraid to go to a Cuban resort during a low season because of previous experience elsewhere, but at Buenavista you can go anytime without a fear. The location is breathtaking and very romantic - you have a choice of 3 beaches very different from each other- 1) for beautiful snorkling experience 2) for swimming and endless long white sand beach and 3) very wild but very special for birds watching and unbelivable sunset. The roons are the best i have seen in Cuba, modern and spacious. The food, although the choice is smaller compared to a buffet, the quality is at the top ! And the service is so great, that everything is done to please each and everyone. If one day guava icecream is not available and you have asked, its there tomorrow and the waiter will remember u that its there for u now.. The manager and his wife are amazing and arr very present to make sure that you are having the vacation of your time.
Cant wait to go back

We have just returned from a 7 day holiday at this hotel and we had a wonderful experience. Having been to Cuba for the 18th time, at many excellent hotels in various tourist regions, we can say that we truly loved the Melia Buenavista. This is one of our favorites.

If you are looking for a small, intimate, adults only hotel with a gorgeous beach, beautiful pool, luxurious rooms, personalized service, and 24 hour bar and a la carte room service, (there is no buffet!), this is it. We felt spoiled here although in terms of service, we haven't really been disappointed anywhere. This hotel is special because it focuses on spoiling its clients and almost succeeds. People that travel to Cuba should understand that there are limitations in this country. Nothing is consistent in terms of food and beverage availability. Deliveries are unreliable and anything not made or grown locally is imported and thus not guaranteed. What is there one week might not be there the next week or for months thereafter. Having said this, they try extremely hard to please their guests. In the same token, Cuba cannot be compared to other sun destinations in terms of star quality.

There are two a la carte restaurants for dinner. One is the International that rotates its menu on a nightly basis and the other is the Navigantes which has a set menu. We found the menu limited in its choices to two main dishes at the International restaurant. The quality of food was palatable but the menu should be expanded. The soups were very good, but salad was absent as a choice. We liked that fact that the bread was served warm. Wine. The house wine offered is unacceptable. When we complained about the wine, a better quality was offered to us. This should be standard because it IS available. What we enjoyed very much was the charcoal barbeque at the pool during the lunch period. The lobby bar was adequately stocked with some choices of premium brand liquors and imported beers. However, we weren't offered the premium beer until we discovered it was available. This is unacceptable. We've been to lower rated hotels in Cuba that had better quality of choices. This hotel lobby bar made the best Cappuccinos in the morning that we have ever had.

The property was very well kept. The beach is beautiful, but it needs to be cleaned more often due to the seaweed washing up on the shore. The "bartender" at the beach bar tried, when he had a free moment, to serve the clients on the beach. Beach service should be provided.

There are many wonderful things about this hotel that we have not mentioned. We are recommending this hotel and we would mention that the manager, Jaume Vilardell i Margarit, has only been there one month and we must give him the time and the opportunity to make the necessary changes to make it a true five star.

We would like to thank Jaume and each and every staff member of the Melia Buenavista for making this vacation a memorable one. We will be back.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great, whatever you choose.
