We have been frequent visitors to Cuba for the past eighteen years. During that time, we have seen numerous improvements in what Cuba's resorts have to offer visitors: the Melia Buenavista is one example of why these continuous improvements are attracting more visitors and drawing accolades in reviews.
Recent reviewers have done an excellent job of describing the physical attractions and benefits of the Buenavista: it is unnecessary for me to repeat them. I do, however, hope to provide some different insights which will encourage prospective future clients to actually stay at the hotel.
A small, adults only resort such as the Buenavista is obviously designed to appeal to a limited, but demanding clientele. Being relatively new (less than four years old) it is still in the process of acquiring a reputation which, in our opinion, it already richly deserves.
While we were there, the hotel was less than half full. The age range of these clients was broad: from mid-twenties to late sixties. Visitors from Russia, Brazil, Argentina, the United States, Spain and Canada were evident. Just as evident was the fact that despite their differences, all were looking for essentially, the same experience ... a small, intimate resort set in a beautiful surrounding which offered outstanding service.
From our arrival, through to our departure, the service from the staff we encountered was excellent.
First impressions are critically important: the welcome in the Buenavista lobby was comforting. One immediately knew that this was a place where service and concern for the clients needs/wishes was paramount. You just "knew" that you had made the right choice in coming to this property. The week which followed magnified that belief.
A beautiful natural setting, intimacy, an attractive physical component, very, very good food, a diverse interesting, clientele and excellent service: the Buenavista has it all. I would be remiss, however, if I did not include one last thought on why this hotel is as good as it is.
Service from front line staff is critical in the service industry. Having the latter does not happen in isolation. Management must, in my opinion, ensure that staff must buy into the belief that service is the foundation of any success.
The manager of the Melia Buenavista, Jaume Vilardell i Margarit is relatively new to his position. He is, however a natural leader. A positive, enthusiastic visionary he doesn't simply delegate service to his staff ... he leads by example.
He is constantly out and about the resort, greeting clients, asking them for positive and negative feedback and, when necessary, taking the steps to rectify concerns. He respects the Cuban employees. He knows when to praise and when to prod. His commitment to excellence is obvious to the staff: they have embraced that commitment and are doing their best to ensure that the goal is achieved.
Jaume's management team has also embraced his values. Ana, in quality control, cordially and calmly dealt with a minor request we had. Her prompt and efficient response was, as well as a testimony to her excellence, another example of the fact that service is paramount at the Buenavista.
We feel fortunate indeed to have visited the Melia Buenavista. We highly recommend it to those who are new to Cuba and those who have visited the island many times. We hope and believe that your experience will be similar to ours and so many other reviewers on this sight who have had the privilege of staying here.
