We had such a great time at this ryokan. It is located very close to Mount Aso, about a 20min drive away. We were really surprised when we arrived, as we hadn't expected such a nice place. We had booked over the phone, but I believe (not sure if it is true), that they did not actually make the reservation for us. However, we were received very politely and eventually taken to a very nice room. The room is great - a living room and a sleeping room big enough for three-four futons. The decor is really nice. Very cool furniture in the room and all around the hotel. Another nice touch is that women get to choose a yukata - the hotel has a bunch of different patterned ones, and you select the one you like best. They also have yukatas and happis for the kids.
There are five private baths. You simply pick any empty one to use - just remember to lock it so others don't barge in. If these are all full, then you can use the common baths, which are large and nice. The outdoor one is really pretty.
The food is very good here. We had a full kaiseki dinner - very delicious. Breakfast is also very generous and yummy.
The price for this ryokan is very reasonable. We paid about 26,000Yen for full-board for a family of four (kids are little). We were very happy with our stay here. Definitely recommended.
Tip for families with small kids - there is a great playground just round the corner from the ryokan. A huge slide and hutches full of guinea pigs...the kids will enjoy a break there.
