“We enjoyed the whole experience”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

We stayed 16th to 19th March 2014

This is a very good hotel, sat there on its own on flat land by a bend in the Serrano River. The view from the public rooms and from the back bedrooms are almost hypnotic; there, over the horse pasture and across the river are the magnificent peaks of Cuernos Del Paine. For one who has had a lifelong love of the mountains, this is Nirvana.

I say the hotel sits there on its own, well, there is not even a black top road within a mile or so of it, but they do seem to be working on some kind of project as we drove in, so maybe the road will get there soon. This is a classy hotel, with professional, friendly staff, there was not one single issue or item that disappointed us.

The rooms were large and comfortable, very clean and well maintained. We were not disturbed by any noises at night, either mechanical or human, and to wake up in the morning with that view…Well, people would pay big money just to pitch there tent on the grass out back.

The food for the Dinner Buffet was VERY GOOD, I know buffets, I live in Las Vegas, where they have a full range of buffets for all tastes and budgets. The Serrano’s would defiantly compare with many of those.

What that woman from Leeds, was eating when she described the food as “Abysmal” I hesitate to guess, something she picked up in the horse pasture by the sound of it!

We did not pre-book the excursion package the hotel offers, I thought maybe my wife might like at least one lazy day at the hotel, we could pick and choose by the day depending on how we felt. This has been a very full and busy couple of weeks for us so far.

As it turned out, we took two of the excursions that are offered, The Grey Navigation and Transportation, and the Serrano River Navigation by Zodiac, two great trips, and not at all tiring for our old legs.

For the Grey, you are taken to a café near the lake where you meet up with others who are doing the excursion to the glacier, then a very short bus ride with the assembled group to a parking lot, then a short hike, crossing the Rio Pingo bridge that takes you to the end of the beach where you board a Zodiac which takes you for 1 minute ride where you finally board the craft that takes you to the Glacier at the top of Lake Grey.

Well worth the little effort

Sounds complicated, but in reality it’s very easy and doesn’t take long.
For the Serrano, you board the Zodiac very near the hotel and navigate your way down river, until you get to a point where you must hike up and over a little hill where you board a different Zodiac. Kind of like a portage that kayakers’ sometime have to do, it bypasses a little waterfall. It is a beautiful ride down the river and you get up close and personal with the Serrano Glacier on a little hike, and get a good view of the nearby Balmaceda Glacier.

We enjoyed the whole experience.

Perfectly good modern hotel, a bit stark and utilitarian to look at from the outside (but who wants a neo-Classical mock-up in the middle of a Patagonian National Park?), and inside too, but comfortable enough. It sounds as though the rooms with the view of the Cuernos del Paine are the best bet; those on the other side are a bit ordinary, and may only have a shower if ours was anything to go by. Generous buffet at mealtimes, although if you stay beyond a couple of days the choices may start to pall. The shop in the foyer has a limited stock, is only open for a few hours a day, and the pricing of the books there is a joke. But the view of the Cuernos from the dining-room and the public rooms makes up for everything. This is why you're here, right? So, as I said at the start, perfectly good hotel - not brilliant, but in a brilliant place.

We looked at different options to celebrate our 33rd anniversary in Torres del Paine and settled for hotel Rio Serrano and we were so impressed with its accommodation and hospitality. From the initial contact, Sebastian was very responsive and answered our inquiries promptly each time. We mentioned to him that we did not want anything to go wrong. He went out of his way to surprise us with champagne, fruits and chocolate in our room when we checked in. We had the best room at the end on the 3rd floor with full view of Los Cuernos (the Horns).

Another thing we would like to mention here is that we had a flat tire and the hotel has a shop that took care of us to continue with our adventure.

The restaurant is huge with large selections. The only problem was that we ate too much.
The hotel is actually about 3 km outside of the park but it is not loaded with backpackers (no offend to backpackers because I am one) like another popular one inside the park. You would need a car to have flexibility.

Thanks Rio Serrano for a memorable stay.

Room Tip: Rooms with balcony and view of the Horns (Cuernos) are the best

This hotel has the most amazing view ever! But, when you're done looking at the view there is also a lovely bar and decent restaurant. The restaurant only services a buffet, which is fine as there's loads to choose from, it offers variety and the food itself is really good. However, we stayed there for 4 nights and I think they need to put a sign up explaining that the buffet is the only offering as night after night I could overhear confused travellers saying, 'er... well, I don't want the buffet' [cue blank look from waiting staff and uncomfortable pause].

The rooms are excellent, the most comfortable bed we had for the whole trip I think. I'd definitely stay again.

The view from our room was worth the price. Our guides were fun, personable, attentive, informative and fluent in English and Spanish. The excursions were first rate. The food served buffet style in the evening was good and all you could want. The only meal we had at lunch was ala carte and very very good. I don't know how they can do this well in such a remote location. We had the Serrano package so all our transfers, excursions and meals were included. I do not regret doing it this way although we did not take much advantage of the included wine and all the meals. We were very satisfied and felt we got our money's worth. We loved it and would go back again.

Room Tip: You will want a room with a view of the mountains.

The hotel is very good, something you do not expect in such a lonely place.
I do not understand the comments on the food. I understand that the meals are not cheap, but I assume it's not easy to provide hotels in this area with all the goods required.
The buffet dinner is anyway good. Staff very nice. View AMAZING!
Rooms are very comfortable, I wish I could have stayed there longer.

ONE IMPORTANT INFORMATION: If you travel from Argentina beware the Street that will take you to the hotel is closed in its last part from 10 am till 1830 pm. We didn t know it, when I booked the hotel they didn t think of telling me and we stayed more than one hour waiting that the road was accessible again... We travelled March 2014, I have no idea how long this will last, but you d better email to the hotel and ask them. The other way to get to the hotel is too long and you d better save fuel (there is no way to fill in you car in the nearbys)

This hotel, beautifully situated on the river, is sited to give the best views from hotel windows we have ever seen! We were very lucky with the weather and only had one dull half day, the rest were wall to wall sunshine albeit very windy at times. The reception, lounge, bar and restaurant areas make the best of the views but, as they have no blinds and it was so sunny, we found those areas very warm and stuffy and you needed sunglasses to sit anywhere near the windows! Similarly we had to keep the window open in our bedroom - keeping the window open means you hear dogs barking overnight - don't know how much you can hear if you close them. Yes it's worth the extra to be on the mountain side and have a bigger room with that fabulous view.

The fridge is left empty but you can have it filled from the bar if you request it. Laundry is only done on Mondays. We would have liked a plug for the bath to soak tired limbs after walking but there wasn't one.

As others have said there is no tv and Wi-Fi is really only available in the bar area and is hit and miss so you may want to bring something to read in the evenings or while you are waiting for trips to start.

We found the breakfast fine with a good choice although it finishes at 10 am and if we went down at 9.15 am items weren't topped up - the scrambled eggs were cold. We had a very nice lunch one day and had the buffet dinner another night - both included wine and we felt the choice was good and the price was about right for the quality and location. The buffet had some good salads and desserts. Sandwiches and snacks are served in the bar area from 3-7 pm but there was no cake, cheese platter or burgers when we asked. If you need snacks bring them with you as you cannot even buy a bag of potato chips here. We hoped for a vending machine but were out of luck. Water is in small bottles and was the most we had ever paid for water! We hoped to buy packed lunches but these are only available to you if you buy their very expensive tours.

We did go on the Lake Sarmiento to Lake Amarga walk with the charming and helpful Martin and Nico. It was a lovely day out but at a price!

We understand a swimming pool and spa are on the cards for next year. We found all the staff friendly and helpful and would certainly recommend staying here but just read the reviews so you know what to expect.

Room Tip: Would recommend paying for the mountain view. These rooms are bigger.
