We stayed 16th to 19th March 2014
This is a very good hotel, sat there on its own on flat land by a bend in the Serrano River. The view from the public rooms and from the back bedrooms are almost hypnotic; there, over the horse pasture and across the river are the magnificent peaks of Cuernos Del Paine. For one who has had a lifelong love of the mountains, this is Nirvana.
I say the hotel sits there on its own, well, there is not even a black top road within a mile or so of it, but they do seem to be working on some kind of project as we drove in, so maybe the road will get there soon. This is a classy hotel, with professional, friendly staff, there was not one single issue or item that disappointed us.
The rooms were large and comfortable, very clean and well maintained. We were not disturbed by any noises at night, either mechanical or human, and to wake up in the morning with that view…Well, people would pay big money just to pitch there tent on the grass out back.
The food for the Dinner Buffet was VERY GOOD, I know buffets, I live in Las Vegas, where they have a full range of buffets for all tastes and budgets. The Serrano’s would defiantly compare with many of those.
What that woman from Leeds, was eating when she described the food as “Abysmal” I hesitate to guess, something she picked up in the horse pasture by the sound of it!
We did not pre-book the excursion package the hotel offers, I thought maybe my wife might like at least one lazy day at the hotel, we could pick and choose by the day depending on how we felt. This has been a very full and busy couple of weeks for us so far.
As it turned out, we took two of the excursions that are offered, The Grey Navigation and Transportation, and the Serrano River Navigation by Zodiac, two great trips, and not at all tiring for our old legs.
For the Grey, you are taken to a café near the lake where you meet up with others who are doing the excursion to the glacier, then a very short bus ride with the assembled group to a parking lot, then a short hike, crossing the Rio Pingo bridge that takes you to the end of the beach where you board a Zodiac which takes you for 1 minute ride where you finally board the craft that takes you to the Glacier at the top of Lake Grey.
Well worth the little effort
Sounds complicated, but in reality it’s very easy and doesn’t take long.
For the Serrano, you board the Zodiac very near the hotel and navigate your way down river, until you get to a point where you must hike up and over a little hill where you board a different Zodiac. Kind of like a portage that kayakers’ sometime have to do, it bypasses a little waterfall. It is a beautiful ride down the river and you get up close and personal with the Serrano Glacier on a little hike, and get a good view of the nearby Balmaceda Glacier.
We enjoyed the whole experience.
