“Cozy cabin with amazing views but . . .”
Reviewed 24 November 2013

We were doing a 5 day trip on the W circuit through Adventure Life and this was the first stop. We were prepared to stay in one of the dorms but had the good fortune of getting a cabin. It was cold and snowing lightly when we arrived so getting a private cabin with a wood burning stove was really welcome. Dry wood was provided and sitting in the warmth of the cabin looking up through the skylight and watching the snow come down was very enjoyable. The cabin furniture was minimal - a decent double bed, clean linens and blankets, a nightstand, a few hooks for clothes and the wood stove - but compared to the dorm it was heaven and we really enjoyed it. The cabins are up a hill and a bit of a distance from the main lodge which was a positive in terms of peace and quiet. Waking up to sun and the amazing views from the porch was a delight. Overall, we were very pleased with our experience staying in the cabin. The downside: The cabins share bathroom and shower facilities. The bathrooms aren't heated and the showers were pretty dirty. There was hot water but between the grubbiness and the cold, taking a shower wasn't very appealing. There was a hot tub available but it didn't look very clean so we passed.

The dinner was simple but decent - baked chicken and rice. Breakfast was the usual scrambled eggs, bread, and cereal but certainly ok. The packed lunch had a crummy sandwich of thick and dry bread with chicken filling and a few snack bars.

Overall, the cabin was very enjoyable and a great way to spend our first night on the W circuit.

Room Tip: We were travelling with 3 other couples and we were all happy to get our own cabin rather than stayi...

Thank you for your comment about your experience in Los Cuernos Cabins, we absolutely agree they are very well located to provide a nice rest and the views are fantastic.

About the Bathrooms, we have checked and send your comments to the manager so they can make the necessary improvements.

I had the pleasure of being in one of the cabins and really wonderful landscape and the human group that works there makes the day enjoyable. The care and shelter environment make it the best in the circuit. Lovely!

The Refugio is Beautifully situated near the lake below the peak of the mountains. Clean and just really really nice and tastefull!!! Everything perfect for a camp stay or at the Refugio inside. It was certainly the nicest Refugio I had seen at Torres so far.

We stayed in one of the cabins, which was nice and cozy. I think the wind about knocked it off of its foundation a few times and certainly drafts came in at the corners. The hot tub never actually got hot, unfortunately, because it looked quite nice. The dinner was actually pretty good, with even a nice dessert.

Hi !!
Thanks for your review. Wind in Patagonia is very strong, our infrastructure is safe, but wind always find the way to get in !

About the hot tub, we are taking care of that and have informed the manager, it has to be ready after 15.00 PM every day.

Regards!

About my 5 stars: No this isn't a "5-Star Hotel"... but considering the service, food, the view and how remote it is... I don't know how to improve it.

We had spectacular weather (aka hot and sunny) from Ref Torre Central to Ref Los Cuernos. The hike along the lake is fabulous but seemed to go on forever as we kept wondering when we'd find our next stop. When we finally saw the refugio from a hilltop it was like looking at Shangri-La. Set among the trees with the milky green lake on one side, the incredible peaks on the other, and a stunning waterfall alongside... it's just gorgeous.

Check-in was a bit crazier than usual because Campo Italiano was closed due to a plumbing issue so displaced hikers were everywhere. Same as the others... produced our vouchers and passports, and got meal tickets. We were shown to our cabin which had a big comfy bed, lots of windows, and room to dump all our stuff. We promptly bought a bottle of wine to enjoy on our front porch and strolled to the waterfall overlook.

This refugio can be reached by boat, so it was pretty well supplied, but the little store was overwhelmed by hungry hikers so we gave away some chocolate and trail mix left from our bag lunches. Dinner was filling soup, chicken with rice, and dessert (and our wine of course).

Cabin-dwellers have a separate bath house behind the cabins and get to use the wood-fired hot tub. I saw some complaints about the hot tub in previous reviews... yes, you might have to skim some bugs off the surface but only a public pool with a skimmer doesn't have that issue, and the staff hauled wood up the hill and fed the fire while we were there, so it was plenty warm during our visit. Felt so good to soak after our 2nd full day of hiking.

We slept very well, enjoyed our breakfast, picked up our staggeringly heavy lunch bags and hit the trail for the French Valley.

Note: It got really windy during the night. Secure any items you hang out to dry.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a cabin if you can. The separate bath house, hot tub, room to repack your stuff if...

This place is great. Tons of character. A four-hour hike from the nearest car. We stayed in the bunkhouse, dorm-style refugio. 6 bunks to the room, so know what you're getting into if you don't score one of the private cabins. Food was good. Common area was bustling and fun, even in the shoulder season. A highlight. Decently clean for such a situation. Supplies were minimal.

Room Tip: Reserve a cabin if you want something nice or private. The basic Refugio setup is a dormitory-style...

it's an exceptional place, amazing view, and the staff was smiling despite deep inside we knew they were tired. we saw them working and moving the whole day, and the most impressive part was that they took time to help us with our horrible quality tent! in a very difficult weather. thank you very much! we loved it!
the only "non.excellent" part are the prices in comparison with other refuges.
