“Nice Estancia (fairly) close to Torres del Paine”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

Estancia Tercera Barranca is located adjacent to Torres del Paine National Park. Our bedroom was large and had a nice modern bathroom. The furnishings were simple, but the bed was very comfortable. The house has a large great room with a large fireplace and stunning views of the mountains. The meals are served in a separate dining house about 100 feet from the main house. All of the cooking is done on a wood burning stove. Both breakfast and dinner are substantial, with fresh baked bread. It is a working farm with horses, cattle and sheep, and the cats and working dogs necessary for such an operation. It is fun to watch the action. We were also able to spot some condors flying over the low hills close to the dining area. Although the Estancia is located adjacent to Torres del Paine, it still takes about an hour to drive from the Estancia to the park entrance. The 13 Km drive from the entrance gate to the house is on a fairly rough gravel road, so it is not possible to drive very fast on this segment. Vincent, the manager, speaks good English Everyone else speaks only Spanish, but nevertheless are very warm and friendly.

Tercera Barranca is a place we will never forget! It's takes a bit of a drive to get there - which is part of the amazing experience... Each turn revealed another gorgeous vista and by the time we arrived at the Estancia we were in awe! The view of Torres Del Paine as we arrived literally bought tears to my eyes! We were only staying for one night but decided to extend our stay to two nights.

Victor warmly greeted us and made us feel at home. The rooms are clean and very comfortable with huge windows and views!

The food here is so delicious... authentic Chilean and cooked to perfection. I have been craving the slow cooked lamb and potatoes for over two weeks now since we left.

We went horseriding on the property which was very easy to organise. Once again we saw more incredible views, took lots of amazing photos and saw heaps of animals on the property including, guanacos, rheas, skunks, hares, a grey fox and condors! Not bad for a half day of horse riding!

The service is excellent - everyone is friendly and welcoming - we had lots of nice conversations with the staff and got to know everyone by the time we left. I really miss this place. Both of us agree this is an incredible place to experience and we will never forget our stay.

The location is closer to Torres Del Paine than Puerto Natales and was a great place to launch our hike of the W.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a great view with big windows, but ask for a room with a view of Torres Del Paine...

This estancia is off to the side of the park, but well worth the traveling for a true ranch experience. Very comfortable, great food, lovely kitchen, great people, views views views, what more can you ask for? They offer activities however we had our own agenda and did do any. Loved the place!

Last October, we had a fabulous trip to Patagonia, Chile. After spending a few days in the Torres del Paine park, we headed over to the Tercera Barranca ranch. Driving up in the early evening, we enjoyed a glorious sunset. The owner met us as we drove up and welcomed us to the guesthouse which we had to ourselves. He built a wonderful raging fire (which they kept going the entire two days we were there) in the living room. He has a really wonderful property, very comfortable with fantastic views. The dining room is a separate building and the cook is Carmen - who speaks only Spanish and is a joy. She made us three very good meals a day - everything from scratch and most of it produced on the ranch.

One day we decided to take a horseback ride throughout the ranch which took about 4 hours and was very enjoyable. We saw all types of birds at the ranch, emu, jack rabbits, etc.

Really a wonderful, relaxing time. Make sure you take cash to close out your bill as he cannot take credit cards - I am assuming there is no internet here. Oh yes, and the generator goes off at midnight so no late nights here if that is your cup of tee.

We really enjoyed our recent stay at Tercera Barranca. The food was excellent (though not necessarily inexpensive...)as was the service. The staff was extremely accommodating. The estancia itself is located a bit from the main road, so it is peaceful and quiet. That being said, it takes about 45 mins to get to the park from the Estancia, so it's not really a base to visit the park. The rooms are basic, but very clean and there is plenty of hot water. The views of the torres of Torres del Paine cannot be equaled.

We had a 5 night stay here. There are fantastic views of Torres del Paine. The tremendous meals are cooked in front of you by Carmen on her wood burning stove. One evening we had a chilean bbq (one of their own sheep). Most of the salad and vegetables are grown on site and picked minutes before you eat them.
The rooms are quiet and ours had a great view. The common room has a fireplace and comfortable furniture. There was a good turnover of mainly horseriding guests so dinners were great fun. Note this is a working estancia so the accommodation is not hotel standard but it is very clean and comfortable with lots of hot water. Manager Jose was indefatigable to make everyones stay comfortable. NB he is the only English speaker. One point there is no petrol nearer than P. Natales so if you have a car make arrangements with the Estancia for a petrol supply. The staff all went out of their way to ensure that everyone had a great time. For example the owner Don Pepe made a special trip to bring us petrol and the farm manager Don Juan helped fill our car every morning.

Although not as luxurious (or as expensive) as the hotels in the National Park its a far nicer and genuine place to stay it is first and foremost a working estancia. We would thoroughly recommend it.

Room Tip: There are six rooms and the Torres Del Paine room has the best view.

My wife and I had a delightful four night stay at this estancia, just outside the park. Although it is not a 5 star hotel, we loved the charm of this working ranch. The room we had was large and comfortable, with a view across to the towers of Torres del Paine. Jose, the manager, was delightful. He also spoke English, which was useful. Pisco sours early evening followed by a fabulous dinner, cooked my the wonderful Carmen and served up by Patricia. Everyone there is happy and they really work as a great team. They also catered for our needs as celiacs, so that was a big plus for us. One evening they had an asado and we sampled the fine Patagonian lamb, cooked in the traditional way, followed by some local dancing which we all took part in for fun. Amazing evening!
They have a have a stable of horses there too, and we had a great ride through the countryside. Only a couple of small things to note. Electricity is provided by a generator, which is turned off at midnight. Also, the track to the estancia is quite long with three gates to get through, but that’s part of the fun of staying on a remote estancia. Highly recommend this place, rather than paying a fortune in the park.
