“Disgusting and a formidable example of what a hotel should NOT be. This is a HOTEL HELL.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 September 2012

This was a last minute booking. My wife and I were tired after visiting family and did not have the capacity to drive 90 minutes to our normal living quarters in Rethymno. We walked through door and saw a TripAdvisor sticker on the lobby entrance. Seeing this brought a smile thinking it was going to be an average to decent experience. We were horribly mistaken. Price for the room was 40€. We parked the car, grabbed our suitcase and headed up to room 310 on the second floor. You read that right. Series 3 room on level 2. I always travel with my UV Blacklight. The bedsheets had semen stains along with urine spots. The pillows had sweat stains and outlines of hands in black. The bathroom was in horrid condition. There was a 'disinfected' ribbon the the toilet but I assure you...it is purely for decoration. We quickly bolted from the room not wanting to catch a disease but not before taking a few pictures of this cess pool for TripAdvisor. We took our money back with hesitation from the guy running the joint. Stay away from this place unless you bring a hazaradous chemical suit with you to sleep in.

Would never return and would not recommend.
Booked as a last minute package option. Terribly regret that. We were sold on the fact that it is advertised to be family run. Previous experiences in Greece with small family run places were excellent; not this one.
Upon arrival they made us wait until they saw all passports and IDs and then started booking. Staircase narrow and steep, was hard taking up luggage.
Room small and facing the courtyard of a family of locals, with all the noise from kids, late dinners, etc.
Location is terrible right in the main traffic strip in Ammoudara, cannot sleep a wink until 3 a.m. when bikes and motorcycles transit sort of slackens. But not for long! At dawn the garbage bins get picked up and that is very noisy too.

Breakfast is extremely poor and the same every day. Sweet crackers, coffee and some camp style tea. The coffe thermos must be older than the hotel, cracked and stained. When something finishes they take a long time to refill so you are on your way by then.
The lady managing the place - not sure if owner or family as she commutes from Iraklio by bus and it is certain she'd live there perosnally doles out every dice of food with a fake smile, and minds the other guys who man the place watching over every crumb. It felt more like an orphanage at breakfast time, try taking TWO pieces of food and watch the faces. However, there was some melon or fruit on most mornings, tinly pieces, but still.
There were many Russians staying there, and tea catering for them seemed to be suboptimal, from what I could notice not enough to supply their needs.

The balcony lock was broken when we checked in, the mechanisms was just shattered to pieces due to a cheap and stingy choice, and it lay there, so when we announced this the lady-manager-owner caught fire and accused us of breaking it. They said some guy will come look at it on Monday after the weekend - and meanwhile if we wanted our things to be safe we can use the tine safe in the room - and GET CHARGED FOR IT!!
That was unnacceptable of course so we asked for another room with a proper lock on the sliding door, as we had to secure the laptop/valuables.
This haggling took one hour and the only way to succeed was to share it with other customers in the breakfast room and tell them about the poor service, only then could get attended.
The only way to get anything like an extra pillow or towel would require similar arm twisting so all in wall it was a ruined vacation mostly owing to the hotel lack of comfort, unfriendliness and generally a bad vibe.

Room cleaning and service happens in random rooms at the worst times when one is resting, and they'd unlock the door and come in - even if you're yelling "Don't come in" they're chattering and clunking so loud outside they cannot hear.
The kitchen to the restaurant downstairs has a door next to the entrance to the hotel, so aside from the smells you get to see the lady who's cooking smoking and dripping ashes over the food; hands not very clean, and generally all looked in need of more hygiene (ironically a Greek word) so we decided not to eat anything cooked there, just the breakfast which was biscuits out of the box and soluble coffee.
The area has nothing to offer and is far from anything of interest. All the good hotels and places to eat are two miles north, and it it a tough walk inthe unforgiving sun. There is a bus stop to Iraklioi however, if you can wait in the sun.
The beach - the public one - is across the noisy street at the end of a 300 m walk through briers and thistles and garbage.
The only plentiful thing was the sun indeed, which is very scorching, the building has thin walls and no insulation, so it gets extremely hot and uncomfortable so one has to start the air condition - an extra 35-50 EUR charge per week of course. Nothing is free at the Sun hotel...
All in all a terrible experience, I think probably the other reviews just confused this with another hotel, can't explain it otherwise.
It was horrible and tiring and we had to sleep a week after the holiday to make up for lost sleep.
Not recommended for any purpose, you're better off sleeping on the beach.

Even though the rooms are small and simple, we enjoyed the atmosphere. The room was clean and the service was excellent and very friendly. The location was very good for traveling around the island with the car. Breakfast was a nice continental breakfast. Nice restaurants are close to the hotel plus mini-markets. There is a cultural center"Technopolis" about fifteen minutes walking from the hotel with an open auditorium and Greek artists perform there. We would definitely return to this hotel!!!

It was great from my point of view. The service is great, very clean (they clean the room and change sheets every day, except Sunday, and they apologized for that ), breakfast included it was "open buffet". Approximately close to a quiet and less populated beach (200-300m). Around the hotel are a lot of places where you can eat, but the restaurant of the hotel was a little expensive than the others. The pool is very clean, but I preferred the sea. Rooms are a little too small, but for a 2 stars hotel was ok (big bed, hair dryer, TV, AC, safety box, fridge, wardrobe). The bus station for Heraklion was at 50m from the hotel.
