“Dreaming of Shangri La”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 January 2013

Dreaming of Shangri La, you probably imagine staying in a tibetan-style place like this. Very well situated in the old town. Despite of the cold winter weather and room, heating blanket and hot water in the shower were welcomed. Before arriving in China, I asked for someone to pick up me at the airport as I read hotel was difficult to find. There was effectively someone to pick me up and the hotel situation didn't seem too tricky to me. If I have to return at Shangri La, I will definitely go back there !

Having read all the reviews, I failed to see that this hotel was in the heart of the Old Town, just a few yards away from the main square where every evening the traditional dancing gets underway.
We stayed in one of the split level rooms on 3 different floors. Well furnished, but steep stairs especially to the mezanine level where we had to keep reminding each other to 'WATCH YOUR HEAD'.... Although we were expected, there was no thought that the room should be heated. It was freezing. Breakfast was not included, but there were plenty of restaurants available nearby. We were able to arrange a driver and minibus for the day to take us around Nappa Lake via the hotel (400 RMB) and the local monastery.

Our cabbie helped us find this inn whose name in Chinese means red rock. We hauled our luggage along cobble stone road turned into a really dusty dirt road near the old town square to find this place. I had wanted to stay here because of the good reviews in Tripadvisor but the place was so decrepit and dirty, I couldn't. The place is decorated with Tibetan banners thick with dust. The bathroom of the room we were shown can definitely use some Clorox and a stiff brush.
The location is good in terms of being just one street behind the old town square. It is bad in terms of distance from the car drop off area at the edge of the town and in terms of being on a short dusty incline surrounded by depressing houses. The young man who showed us around was very pleasant but for 150 yuan one can do much better.

We stayed in this Inn at the end of our week long hiking tour in Yunnan. We really enjoyed staying in an accommodation that is autentic and has a real character. Rooms are small and neat. After hiking in the mountains and staying with locals for a week we really appreciated the electric heating blanket on the bed, warm shower and tea-making facilities in the room. It is a lovely place with a great location, but if you are looking for a comfort of a 5* hotel, perhaps not for you.

We chose this hotel by looking at reviews and were extremely surprised when our tour guide brought us there. It was a backpacking hotel with tiny room and very old looking bathroom without a heater. WE asked to be moved to a different hotel which was not adeqate but bettter than Ge Sang. May be they have better rooms on the second floor. They were all booked and we will never know. Old town of SHangri-la is rather small and you can easily stay outside of it to get a better hotel in a new town and come there for a strall. It was facinating to see people dancing in old town square.

Room and building had lots of character, along with many old town buildings. Staff were friendly. There's a nice view of the town from the roof area. Room was quite cold, but there were electric blankets on the beds, and a heating light in the bathroom. The Bathroom door did not shut properly, and one side only had a sheet across instead of a wall meaning that sound travelled very well, which wasn’t very nice. Food in the restaurant was tasty, but took an age to arrive.

We chose the hotel by reading reviews but we were a bit disappointed! The location is fine since it is not directly in the crowd but it was difficult to find. The staff was friendly but that's it. It could be much nicer if the hotel focus on some details, but loose and wrong assembled faucets, broken toilets and lamps giving a careless feeling! Compare to similar priced hostels e.g. in Lijiang or Yangshuo it was far below expectations. We stayed two nights and to our surprise, the room wasn't cleaned for the second night. The staff told us we should request this - ?? Unfortunately I can not recommend other hotels in Shangri La, but try to get a foreign managed one.... Anyhow, Shangri La is worth a trip and the positive impressions from the nice surrounding outweigh the hotel disappointing!
