“Warm and relaxing family style hostle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 January 2013

We starting walking to Naxi Family GH at 4 pm, spending two hours going there. We recommend the walk in the afternoon since the sunshine will brighten the Yulong mountains facing us.

The hostel is like a big family house. It made me feeling like living in a friend's home.

Very nice place to stay. Friendly staff, good service, nice food, comfortable beds and an astonishing mountain view!
Spent a good deal of our first trek day trough TLG there. Did lunch, diner, breakfast incl. Drinks and slept ina 120y deluxe room. Spent 246 incl about six bottles for the second trek-day. Wel accomodated. Only negative aspect is that the rooms are a bit noisy, but we had earplugs and didnt really mind.. Highly recommended!!

Imagine if you will being surrounded by towering pine covered mountains with mists and drifting clouds on top. This place on the high trail of Tiger Leaping Gorge is magical, a place for communing with the great spirit of the mountains and with free wifi too!
This place is owned by a Naxi (ethnic minority) and the style is Naxi, think Chinese but more zen. Lots of wood, plants, trees, weathered dark roof tiles... The rooms are spacious, simply and comfortably furnished. The western style bathroom entirely satisfactory. I mentioned the beds are too hard, the owner quickly produced two pieces of foam mattress which solved my problem. The hallway to the rooms doubled as balconies where one can sit to enjoy the tranquility and amazing scenery. In the morning we woke up to crowing roosters and clucking chickens. All meals were freshly cooked to order and eaten in a lovely courtyard setting. Some Hikers doing TLG stop here for lunch so the simple menu contains Chinese and Western items.
We stumbled onto this place because the road leading to Cafe Bridge was washed out; the cabbie who was to take us there recommended this place. I was enchanted the moment we entered the compound... We changed our travel plan to stay an extra day here. When it was time to leave, the owner called a car for us.
In my month long travel in Yunnan and Guangzhi, this place, this guesthouse was the most charming and inviting. Were Yunnan not such a distance from Los Angeles, this would be my to go place to recharge my battery. If my credit card can talk, it will say "Ambience priceless, for everything else $19.00 per room per night." It would be a great buy at 7 times that price. I asked the owner why he charges so little. He said the compound has belonged to his family for 80 years. His family lives there and raise most of their own food, he does not depend on the guesthouse for his livelihood.

On our TLG trek we stayed at Naxi guesthouse on the first night and were absolutely delighted with, well, everything really. Unfortunately our hopes were risen significantly then dashed with the guest houses further along the trail!!

For 120rmb we stayed in a double room with private bathroom. The room was clean and dry and the hot water was hot! Food was great, staff friendly and location stunning.

The following evening we stayed at Halfway guesthouse and paid 150 for a damp room with a bathroom that had drain smells so strong that we had to jam the door closed and when use of the room became necessary wrap a shirt around our face in order to enter.

Without making this a review of where we didn't enjoy staying we can firmly say that out of the 4 places that we stayed and/or looked at this was easily the best.

We chose the Naxi Family Guesthouse after reading other reviews on Tripadvisor. Nevertheless, we were still blown away when we arrived, and the feeling continued for the 3 days that we stayed there. The location is a rare combination of idyllic with majestic. The Guesthouse is located three-quarters of the way up a hillside of small farmhouses, terraced fields, forest and flowing water. Below - about 800 meters down - is the turquoise strip of the Yangtze River. Above - about 4000 meters up - are the snow-covered peaks of the Jade Mountain, amongst other peaks in the mountain range flanking the Yangtze at this stretch. We were greeted warmly by the owners, and soon thereafter by the son of the owner, as well as by the 1-year old granddaughter, who seemed unfazed by all of the new additions and departures crossing her path on her strolls around the courtyard.

The food was delicious, much of it coming straight from the fields of the surrounding hillside. The rooms were comfortable - firm mattresses, hot showers, decent TV reception. The only word of warning is for travelers coming off-season: we experienced a cold-snap in March, and even with the electric blankets provided, found the sleeping conditions chilly. But upon waking up the morning and opening the curtain, we were again extremely grateful for the place that we had chosen to stay!
