“A great pity”
Reviewed 13 September 2011

We had high hopes of this place from the photos, especially my wife. It COULD be excellent if it were not for the attitude of the staff.

Problems:
-dirty
-they only "cleaned" our room (at 2pm) when we pointed out it really needed it. Consisted of throwing our duvet back on the bed, changing towels and nothing else. Very few other guests so they were not overworked.
-we learned that if, in China, one arrives at a hotel and the staff don't get their noses out of Internet to greet you then you have made a bad choice. This was a typical example.
-noise on the first night. A row in the room below us until the wee hours. When we asked for them to do something they apologetically explained the situation to the revellers who continued as if nothing had happened. We are 100% sure they were the owners making the noise. However when our guide explained our displeasure the next day they claimed it was "drunken guests"
-not cheap
-poor maintenance (eg the window onto the street outside, noisy tractors at all hours, could not be closed)

Based on our experience, highly unrecommended.

I booked this hotel with some trepidation, seeing that there were not that many reviews. This hotel surpassed my expectations and I would recommend it. I was told by a guide that you can get similar rooms in good hotels for cheaper than what we paid, but I was happy with what we had and believed it was reasonably good value.

The decor is Tibetan-style with lovely rooms (trying to dig through some pix where we're not in them...). The beds were low mattresses on the ground and heat is very sufficient (heater in the form of a giant painting) with heated mattresses. Location was right around the old town (~5 mins walk), with breakfast places around the corner.

Disadvantages of the hotel I can think of are the lack of elevators (obvious given the style of building) - by the time you got to 2/F or 3/F you were quite out of breath given the high altitude. I also saw several small bugs on my pillows, which I think is fairly normal for decor/environment of this type. Bathroom was surprisingly modern given the decor and hot water was good.

The rooms are very nice and the building (traditional tibetan building) as well. We wanted to stay in the old city but all hotels there didn't have running water for several days (there is a severe water supply problem in Zhongdian), so no showers possible there. The Shambala Ranch Hotel has always running water. The location is not too great as you have to walk up the hill from the old town for about 5 minutes but it's ok.

Had reserved a room in Shangri-la's 4-star hotel and then found this one closer to the Old Town area. Quaint, Tibetan courtyard style hotel with modern bathrooms and wood paneling. The hotel was 6 months old when we stayed, and it was in great condition. Found out about it when we went to the Tibetan Cafe, and they recommended. It's a short walk to the old town area. We had stayed in the 4-star hotel, but switched to this one since it was more quaint and closer to the action. They arrange a minibus for us and helped with other travel. This hotel had some good english-speakers, too, that helped.
