i stayed here for a few nights. the only thing that kept me from leaving was my own inertia and the free water, so i saved a few Y on water.

pros:
- good location, next to the main square.
- they have heating pads on the mattresses, but i think that is standard in shangrila.

cons:
- noisy as hell, there's a nightclub on one side and the music from the nightly dancing in the square on the other. thankfully i have earplugs, and because of the altitude, i was sleepy and didn't find it too hard to sleep. avoid this place though, if you are a light sleeper.
- i stayed in the dorms and the number of toilets available was not adequate. there was usually crap all over the sides of the squat toilet, and the western toilet did not flush properly. no toilet paper.
- there are steep stairs leading to the second floor.
- there is no easily available information on buses, tickets, sights, or other travel information and the staff is unfriendly and unwilling to help you.
- i am chinese-american, but do not speak chinese -- the staff (particularly the guy who is there during the day and the young girl with long hair who is sometimes seen sweeping the lobby floors) were incredibly rude and unhelpful, the girl was whispering something to the guy when i was checking in... not sure what they were talking about, but found it very rude and unprofessional.
- many of the lockers in the dorm i was in were broken.

This place would have got a better score but it was let down by a few things. The public toilets were disgusting, flooded, smelly and dirty. The rooms were better but our room was still pretty grubby and the bathroom was dirty. Te worst thing was that they were doing construction work and using angle grinders all day making the place so noisy so noisy you had to leave. There was no warning and at one point when I was sitting relaxing with a drink with no warning they started work and I was hit by red hot sparks...

Stated for a few nights. It's brilliantly located in the old town, the staff are genuinely keen to help and friendly and the private rooms are a good size. What let us down a bit was the cleanliness of the room - balls of fluff in the corners, dust on all the flat surfaces, a toilet that smelled unclean.

On top of that the hostel is currently undergoing construction work - the pleasant communal area is completely unusable from 8am to 8pm due to a steel structure being put up, with deafening noise, sparks flying from welding, the smell of burning and metal paint. It would have been nice if the hostel owners had warned us about this major disruption before we arrived...

It's worth staying here by all means, hopefully you will get a cleaner room than we did. But I would recommend you don't book until 2 months after the date of this review by which time the construction work should be complete.

We stayed for 2 nights, we got a room on the 1st floor, window facing the lounge, it was so noisy, the Chinese guest were talking loud until midnight. We complain, they just apologise and it happen again the following night, went to receiption and the guy manning the front desk does not understand english. I just raised my voice at them saying shhhhhh and it was quite for a while then noisy again, I wonder how they won the best hostel for 2012.

Room Tip: If you want to sleep therem do not take the rooms facing the lounge.

I. I am really sorry ,it is true that no english-speaker in the mid-night --after around 22:00. The whole day time is available.

2. Right now ,it is the busy travle season, many guests in the hostel, so it would be a little noisy. But the guy should control down the voice from the noisy Chinese people. We will pay attention to this.

Best Regards.

Unfortunately we  ended up staying here because tavern 47 was full. The common areas of the hostel are nice and staff helpful and friendly. On the downside, it's expensive for what you get. The dorms are very small, a double room cramped with three bunks and a locker. The toilets were cleaned once a day despite heavy usage meaning the bins were constantly overflowing and smelly. There is dusty carpet throughout the building as they don't use a vacuum cleaner. Also for 40¥ a night you would expect toilet paper in the communal toilets and clean sheets on a made bed  (they didnt change the quilt covers when they swapped the sheets ). After seeing this, we were happy to go to another hostel and left wondering how many people had shared our quilt....

Thanks for review.

1. we clean the shared toilet twice everyday. it looked uncleaned may because there are too many travelers as July was a busy season. Anyway we will pay attention to this ,and clean more times.

2. We require our guset take down the used quilt cover, sheet &pillowcase when check out . Meanwhile we help change the quilt cover , made it ,and leave clean sheet & pillowcase on bed to our guest to make by themself ---which is very easy to fix,as somebody also sit /put bag on other's bed . -----It seems some misunderstanding.

I stayed her in a private room with a private bathroom. It's in a great location right off the main courtyard of the town. The staff is pretty friendly and helpful with information. The common area is cozy with a fireplace and comfy chairs to hang out in. One night the power did go out, not their fault, and it was a bit chilly but they gave us all candles and warm blankets to help. I'd recommend this place as a decent place to stay while in Shangri-La.
