We stay in this hotel for 2 night when we are in Shangri-la for trekking. My friends and booked 2 rooms. The hotel lobby is very cool with a fire place and a small bar. the reception all the way at the end. very impressive. upon check-in we receive hot tea and hot towel to warm up.
After we check you walk into the hotel, its like a courtyard around which are the buildings. the room is very original. They have floor heater!!! for us from a warm country, we loved it as we were so cold outside.
The service is very warm in all areas. The breakfast is great!! It has a combination of buffet with some local dishes and then a menu of which you can choose whatever you want, and as much as you want. Love the idea. great concept. Because the staff is mostly local Tibetan they don't speak fluent English, only some do. So the hotel prepared everything so that guests can communicate with associates without speaking English. Like breakfast has a list where you can tick things. But they ask if you want coffee, tea, or juice. very basic but fantastic how they solve the gap.
Anyway, we love this hotel. I ask what was they Zinc Journey about. It is a new brand and they will have more hotels in Lijiang and Pu'er soon. If i go there I will sure stay with them.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- “Arro Khampa” is a warm hearted greeting in the eastern Tibetan “Kham” dialect. These words pay homage to the ancient tradition of welcoming caravans and travelers along the Ancient Tea Horse Road with a firm invitation to sit down, warm up, and take nourishment and respite from the rigors of travel. It’s English equivalent is “Hey friend, I bid you welcome.”Such greetings underlined the inherent risks and sense of adventure along one of the world’s great trade routes. It expresses the essential need for camaraderie and communion. Arro Khampa Boutique Hotel name is an evocation of the long history of the hotel’s site. Local people in Gyalthang refer to the hotel’s location as the “Nansuodhak” -- the manor house of the Tibetan magistrate of days gone by, who hosted traveling merchants from as far as Lhasa and from the tropical southern border between Yunnan and Burma, supported local scholars and monks, and was a pillar of the community. ... more less
