We stay in this hotel for 2 night when we are in Shangri-la for trekking. My friends and booked 2 rooms. The hotel lobby is very cool with a fire place and a small bar. the reception all the way at the end. very impressive. upon check-in we receive hot tea and hot towel to warm up.

After we check you walk into the hotel, its like a courtyard around which are the buildings. the room is very original. They have floor heater!!! for us from a warm country, we loved it as we were so cold outside.

The service is very warm in all areas. The breakfast is great!! It has a combination of buffet with some local dishes and then a menu of which you can choose whatever you want, and as much as you want. Love the idea. great concept. Because the staff is mostly local Tibetan they don't speak fluent English, only some do. So the hotel prepared everything so that guests can communicate with associates without speaking English. Like breakfast has a list where you can tick things. But they ask if you want coffee, tea, or juice. very basic but fantastic how they solve the gap.

Anyway, we love this hotel. I ask what was they Zinc Journey about. It is a new brand and they will have more hotels in Lijiang and Pu'er soon. If i go there I will sure stay with them.

Room Tip: There is no swimming pool and fitness but i am sure if they have, it would be great ;-)

The hotel is really beautiful, very elegant Tibetan design, the best terrace in town for rest and barbecue, nice staff, good food. We and my friends, Gonzalo Matamala, the Trade and Investment Commissioner at Promotion Bureau of Chile in Beijing and Nicolas Serrano, the Trade and Investment Commissioner at Promotion Bureau of Chile in Guangzhou slept in 3 "Khampa Suites", amazing room! all the three 3rd floor for us. We really enjoyed to stay here, the best for far in Dukezong old town, Shangri-la.

Dear Ricardo E,

Thank you very much for your wonderful review about Zinc Journey Arro Khampa.

I am delighted to read that you liked our hotel and the rooftop barbecue we offer. You will like when I am saying that we took your feedback as well as from our other guests and planned a whole restaurant concept around the idea. Therefore, we will be opening our new Nyima Gyisa Rooftop Lounge this month with lovely tapas, BBQ, pizzas and great drinks overlooking the temples.

It would be a great pleasure to welcome you back with us soon for another wonderful evening at Nyima Gyisa Rooftop Lounge.

Proudly at your service,

We stayed in Arro Khampa on Aug 2013 for 3 nights. Everything from the moment we stepped in to the hotel was perfect. The hotel lobby is beautiful; the rooms are big and carefully designed (up to the unique room lock :)).
The hotel manager and few of her staff speaks fluent English! And are doing everything they can to help.
I highly recommend staying in the hotel.

The level of service granted us by the entire staff is unparalleled, not found in large 5-star hotels.
Upon arrival, we were treated to brown sugar ginger tea, a traditional Chinese preventative remedy for exposure to cold weather. Time and time again during our 3-day stay, we were grateful to the staff members, who not only helped us make sightseeing arrangements, but went far above & beyond the expected. For example, when we decided to enjoy our complimentary self-serve breakfast in the courtyard, one staff came out to provide us with seat cushions due to the chilly air and another asked if we'd like any hot beverages.

The location is gold - it is right at the foot of Dukezong Temple & prayer wheel, which marks the entrance to Shangri-La old town. Yet, it is just out of earshot from the loud pop music & techno lights emanating from the old town's numerous bars. At night, one could just as easily wander over to the bustling shops & bars (~5 min walk) or choose to enjoy the view of the lit-up Dukezong Temple & prayer wheel from the hotel's courtyard or balcony with a glass of wine.

As design students, my friend and I initially selected Arro Khampa for its architectural & interior design, as showcased in the photos. We did not, however, expect the level of detail in design that ranged from cultural touches such as door locks handpicked from Nepal, to modern conveniences such as in-room humidifiers to combat the dry climate.

Although the hotel is a bit pricey in terms of China standards, it is without a doubt worthwhile. Established top-notch hotels in the area are located outside of the old town. On the other hand, existing B&Bs in old town cannot offer the same level of service or design.

I plan to return again.

Arro Khampa is a new, 'boutique' style hotel next to Lion Hill. The location is fabulous with a view of the prayer wheel from our room and nightly dances by the locals in the nearby square. The rooms were nicely furnished, and the hotel as a whole has a very nice modern design (the photos are accurate). As the hotel is new however, it needs to grow a bit to warrant it's lofty prices.

We were the only westerners in the hotel at the time and don't speak Mandarin. Though we'd stayed at many hotels throughout China where the staff had very low level English skills, this was one of the first places where we truly felt the language barrier and I think the staff felt a bit intimidated by us,

On our first evening, the other groups of guests monopolized the upper terrace and restaurant. They were served delicious looking food, but when we asked to look at a menu, we were told that all they had was fried lotus root left. So, we went up the road for dinner at The Olive, which was EXCELLENT!

The next day, when we walked into the lobby, it was full of cigarette smoke as there were guests smoking in the lobby lounge. Now, I know smoking is prevalent in China, but as you have to go through the lobby to get to your room, walking into a haze of cigarette smoke is not what I would expect from a nicer hotel.

The rooms are also quite noisy as you can hear guests in the court yard or in second floor rooms conversations through the walls/floor.

Now I don't want this review to sound too negative as the hotel has immense potential. It is already very nice in design and it is in a perfect location! With time, as the staff grows more confident and the glitches get worked out, I am sure that Arro Khampa will become one of the nicest places to stay in Shangri La.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a room on the second level as these should be a bit quieter.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
“Arro Khampa” is a warm hearted greeting in the eastern Tibetan “Kham” dialect. These words pay homage to the ancient tradition of welcoming caravans and travelers along the Ancient Tea Horse Road with a firm invitation to sit down, warm up, and take nourishment and respite from the rigors of travel. It’s English equivalent is “Hey friend, I bid you welcome.”Such greetings underlined the inherent risks and sense of adventure along one of the world’s great trade routes. It expresses the essential need for camaraderie and communion. Arro Khampa Boutique Hotel name is an evocation of the long history of the hotel’s site. Local people in Gyalthang refer to the hotel’s location as the “Nansuodhak” -- the manor house of the Tibetan magistrate of days gone by, who hosted traveling merchants from as far as Lhasa and from the tropical southern border between Yunnan and Burma, supported local scholars and monks, and was a pillar of the community. ... more   less
