“Have fun getting there”
Reviewed 1 November 2013

Overall, the hotel setting is spectacular and the rooms are top notch. What I could not get over was the one road leading to the hotel. It is under construction, and while this is not the fault of the hotel, they have put zero contingencies in place. Our driver got stuck in the mud, and we were stranded for over an hour and in the end had to walk the last part of the way. If you're going to call yourself a 5 star hotel and charge $40 for 2 eggs for breakfast, you should have a Jeep at the ready for your guests.

Don't go to this hotel until the road is complete.

The Banyan Tree Shangri La is located outside the town of Shangri La in the peaceful Ringgha valley, a great base to explore the area. The 2 bedrooms villa are comfortable (spacious but with one shared bedroom) with all the amenities expected of a Banyan tree, a superb spa and excellent restaurant. We used the tour services with 4 main trips : the land transfer from Lijiang to Shangri La via Tiger Leaping Gorge, a walking tour around Ringhha valley, a tour to the National Park (Shuda & Bita Lakes) and a tour /transfer to the airport via the lamasery & old town. They were excellent and our guide, Sonam Chodeon is very highly recommended, enthusiastic & knowledgeable.

Weather in Shangri La is very changeable (described as being like a baby's face!) so staying in a comfortable warm lodge with full facilities and English speaking staff/guide is something to look forward to & enjoy after a long day exploring the wonders of Shangri La......

We got to the hotel at the night, it was a raining night, we were felt cold, wet, lost, tired and the reaction of the high altitude, but then when our car arrived the staffs had already standing there and picked up us for the first stage... we feel so safe by seeing some people welcoming and conforming us, and our family were all certainly released form all our whole day journey experience as we were so wanted to just go to the bed right the way.
The 2nd experience of this hotel was...
When we got in to the door there was some staffs came to us with greeting and warm and smiling faces, we got offered the hot ginger beverage and hot towel right within a minute, and i seen my parents and the kids were shown the faces of as sweet as home feel, thank god, we have a great day ended up with relaxing home!
If i need to make my comment for improving for this hotel, it's they need the better guiding signs for the hotel felicities and may be a little more cleanness for the outdoor area.
The hotel location is a bit far away from everything, but it's a great place for you to spend some quality time with the people you love!

I stayed at Banyan Tree Ringha for 1 week and experienced different weather conditions, from rain to snow to sun. Waking up every morning with this pleasant surprise is definitely a place to worth visiting. Also, I particularly like the warm and hospitable culture of the staff. Would love to visit again.

Stayed for 4D3N under the Romantic Highlands Retreat to which I had to pay RMB2990 nett per nite for their TIbetan Suite though this did include a roundtrip transfer to the airport along with daily breakfast and a Tibetan hotpot dinner and a set lunch and an afternoon tea throughout the stay. We also took two different tours/treks during our stay there and visited their spa twice.

Firstly the location is far out and you will have to go through very rough and bumpy roads to get there in their 4WD jeep. But once you reach the resort, you will probably hope they keep it that way so its not easy for others to get in!! The location is really remote and you're basically deep inside Shangri-la county on a hill overlooking a calm river and grasslands and even more hills and mountains leading to the Tibetan plateau. It's just simply gorgeous! There's nothing else to describe it.

We stayed at their Tibetan Suites which was a unique experience for us with the bathroom and changing room downstairs with a steep staircase down. The rooms themselves are not overly decorated in a gaudy sense but rather tasteful with touches of Tibetan culture. It really felt very genuine and authentic with a lovely pair of rocking chairs on the patio to which we enjoyed sitting on in the evenings and just breathing in the cool mountain air and overlooking the beautiful scenery. A small private garden is also provided for each suite though I have to say the gardener doesn't really do his job well as the private garden was sparse and more or less just empty. Some lovely flowers would have been a brilliant touch and it can't be that hard as we saw so many wild flowers in the mountain growing everywhere.

We did spa treatments on two nights and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We thought the price was really expensive but I guess due to the lack of competition around, they could feel free to charge as they like (basic rules of economy and monopolies). The massage therapists however were really good and professional. I do feel however they could bring this spa to the next level as currently its located in a large Tibetan like house and the spa treatment is inside. This makes the ambience normal at best and I feel if they could make use of the gorgeous scenery and landscape it would make the experience really special.

We also took two days of tours and treks with them. On the first day we took the Shu Du Gang River Trek which was supposed to be difficult and involved a lot of hiking and climbing. We had a tour guide named Sonam (though everyone calls her Amah (mother) fondly). And instead of a porter following us, we were lucky enough to get another very experienced guide named Xiao Long (but he only speaks Chinese unlike Amah). With the two of them we set off for a long climb and hike. Having the two of them together was brilliant. Xiao Long was superbly knowledge on the flora and kept stopping to show us so many plants and herbs and asking us to smell this and that and even taste certain things. He really made it a special hike. Amah on the other hand was literally like a loving mother towards us throughout the whole trip. You really feel the genuine care and love she has towards you as she leads you around. During the hike we bumped into some rare and really expensive pine mushrooms called Matsutake which retails at a very very high price particularly for fresh mushrooms. She was very sweet and started hunting and collecting these fresh rare mushrooms for us and when we got back to the resort she got the kitchen to cook it for us with other condiments and serve it to us for free (when such a meal would probably cost us a couple of hundred yuan easily). What a fantastic kind hearted lady, it made us feel so special. This is the kind of over the top service that just makes the trip magical and worth every last cent :)

The following day we took a tour to Bai Shui Tai (White Water Terraces) and whilst the trek was very easy, the terraces and fountains were stunningly beautiful and there weren't too many tourists so it was a lovely trip as well.

In conclusion, I felt the price was really expensive for a pretty bare resort nevertheless the location and view was gorgeous and their staff named Sonam (Amah) made the trip extra special and magical and our memories of the trip there won't diminish anytime soon.

Banyan Tree Ringha has done a great job of emulating a true Tibetan experience and the facility is lovely. Unfortunately we had some problems during our stay, the worst of which was the closure of the road leading to the hotel. While this was outside of the hotel's control, apparently the road has been an issue for quite some time. Hopefully the new road under construction will address the problem. The environment is lovely, very close to a true village with pigs and cows and yaks, but it's really quite far from town so make sure you're up for that! Very peaceful, babbling brook and all. No real access to outside restaurants but the food here was quite good, if expensive. Staff was friendly and very helpful.

This is a charming location, overlooking the river and with pigs, cows, horses and yaks wandering about as you walk past
the lodges are self contained and based on original tibetan homes. They are very large, comfortable and done up to 5 star standard.
its difficult to get to, the road is unpaved and the village is not worth visiting so their restaurant has you as a capitive audience when you are not travelling. fortunately its excellent with the Tibetan hot Pot a highlight for us. The a la carte is also very good whether having western inspired dishes such as yak burgers or more local food
the spa treatments are also very good, although it would be nice to have an area for relaxing afterwards
Overall well worth a visit
