You will avoid the crowds and have it all to yourself! its not just a couple of buildings, give yourself time time to wonder around. Although recently rebuild, its very nice integrated in what is left from the old Monastery.

Thank Tanja S

The monastery is the best thing about the city of Shangri-La. Educational for the religious things and the art. Great place to explore on a walk around the lanes and inner passageways. Take a walk around the lake too.

But Shangri-la the town - again it's a great place for a walk around. But mainly to see how poorly the local people live. And, from what I could see, they live without heat.

It is publicly known as "mini potala palace".... a treasure on high latitude land!

Though we had a little problem with the breathing but that didn't stop us from going all the way up to the top of the monastery. And I am truly glad that I didn't give up!! Though it is "mini" potala palace but the structure and layout is not less attractive.... and when you are up there you really feel that the sky is within touch!! Awesome spot that you shouldn't miss when you are in Shangri-La!!

Would have missed this if our flight had not been cancelled due to a typhoon. TA clued us in when we were looking for something to do with this extra day. This is really the highlight of this stop in the unexceptional town of Shangri la. The monastery is large, beautiful, totally stunning. We enjoyed the chanting and the monk's hospitality. It looks and felt like Lhasa must. You will not be underwhelmed...absolutely guaranteed.

We are told that this monastery is 8th century, but its being burned down twice and rebuilt recently. Its well worth a visit but it felt fake to me so I dont know if its a accurate reflection of monastery buildings from the 8th century or a fair reflection of a working temple.
Maybe an expert can let me know!
the collection of money from tourists is very efficient
