I planned an autumn short vacation of three nights / two days on the Renon / Ritten plateau, and I enjoyed it very much, walking fascinating trails.
The excursions are made easy by the excellent signage. You need to bring packed lunch, because the lunch hour often comes in alpine or otherwise lonely places.
The first day, leaving from Longostagno / Lengstein, we walked up to the small church of St. Verena and back. Soon after we headed to the cable car station for Punta Lago Nero / Schwarzsee Spitze (cable car starts from Tre Vie / Pemmern) .
Then at the top station of the ropeway, we walked the beautiful panoramic round trail, in a high mountain environment, which crosses huge stretches of "mugo" pine and offers - if the weather is favorable - a very wide panorama of the Alps, up the Ortles on West and Marmolada on East.
We then walk down the path, back to the valley station of the ropeway.
On the second day, starting from Soprabolzano / Oberbozen, we walked another circular path, the so-called "Themenweg" , which leads to Assunta / Maria Himmerfahrt, and from there by bends down to the valley, to reach the earth pyramids in the small canyon of Rivellone / Rivelaun river: a view for which the plateau is famous.
Edged up in Soprabolzano, we took the lovely, efficient Renon small train up to the last stop of Collalbo / Klobenstein, and from there we walked back to Soprabolzano through the so-called "Freud walk", because often traveled by the famous scientist during his stay on the plateau. The walk is so easy that it can also be made by strollers.
The paths for us have made easier by having a car, but most of the trails are anyway easily accessible by a very efficient public transport.
In particular, the combination of Bolzano-Soprabolzano ropeway and Soprabolzano-Collalbo small train makes possible these paths also leaving from the city of Bolzano and coming back each night.
But of course it's more convenient to stay overnight on the plateau: in Collalbo or in Soprabolzano, which are the most central places.
Overall, a very recommendable stay!
