“A hidden gem”
Reviewed 29 March 2012

Hidden in the middle of a forest outside Sambuca is this gem. The owner, Wynn, is an Englishman who has been in Tuscany for 40 years. We let him guide us and he did not let us down. From a beginning of tempura-fried sage leaves through some heavenly pastas and spectacular steak and suckling pig, every dish was fabulous. He also picked wines for us, steering us to wines cheaper than we usually order but far better than we expected. Highly recommended.

“Lose one, win one...”
Reviewed 20 February 2012

Why this title?
Because our good friend Otello, of the La Toppa restaurant, made us the affront to be closed during the weekend we had to spend in San Donato in Poggio.
So we had to face reality and went in search of another place for lunch. No PC, no smart phone, no guide... only the dear, old nose which rarely (very rarely) makes a blunder.
And we found the Macereto. A bit complicate to reach, but it’s worth it. A nice location, a monumental oven, nice people, good food. I tend to appreciate also a well-set table, you know.
We were a bit limited by the fact that we were supposed to have a substantial dinner that evening, so we shared one set of very appealing typical appetizers. I took roasted duck with curry and orange, my wife a basmati rice with pumpkin, cheese and radicchio.
Couple of glasses of good Chianti, a zuppa inglese (nothing to do with soup, indeed... it’s a heavenly sweetness), coffees and only half a glass of grappa.
I’m sure we will visit again (Otello will regret having treacherously closed down his shop...)
You will not faint at the presentation of the bill, by the way. Enjoy !

“PERFECTION !!!!!”
Reviewed 13 February 2012

I've eaten everywhere in the world but Al Macereto Restaurant is the best so far. From the moment we entered the beautifully decorated interior with small burning oven until the end when we leave the restaurant was all like a dream. We where served by the owner Wynn and his beautiful lovely wife (I forgot the name). We left the choice of menu to Wynn and the food was EXCELLENT !!!
I was at dinner with my wife and my two girls, who were constantly animated with Wynn
Very cheap for such quality food

Can not wait to get back

“Tuscany personified - food, wine and service”
Reviewed 27 November 2011

We found this gem of a restaurant tucked into it's beautiful woodland setting on our first visit to the area 7 years ago. We never fail to be impressed by the wonderful food and atmosphere, and we always feel we are very special guests with personal attention from Wynne. We have taken friends with us at times, and without doubt everyone is hugely impressed by the menu choice, food quality and the additional touches like a welcome glass of Prosecco! A MUST restaurant to visit if in the Chianti region!
