My husband and I are in our 30's and have stayed in a good mix of hostels, pensions and hotels since we started backpacking around Europe in college. While we tend these days to stay at more hotels than hostels, we just couldn't justify spending more than 100 euros a night for a basic room in Tuscany. That's why we decided to go back to our roots and stay at the Ostello del Chianti.
We reserved a private double room, but upon arrival we were given a room with two bunk beds because the hostel didn't have any 'true' doubles. It worked just fine for us because we were able to use the extra beds on top for storage, etc...
The shared bathrooms were clean and there was always hot water. A simple breakfast was just a few euros more a day and it was very convenient.
The hostel is in a good location for someone with a car. The hostel offers a large, free parking lot and is just a short drive or walk into town.
While the town of Tavarnelle doesn't have much to offer when it comes to 'historical' or tourist sites, it did offer some of the best food at two restaurants downtown. The hostel recommended both restaurants and they were both great, local finds, at great prices!
Overall, a good find in expensive Tuscany.More
