We happened upon San Michele while driving around in Chianti and decided to stop. We walked around and came upon the open church but there was no one around. After visiting the interior of the church when walking out a priest was there. He offered to show us around the Abbey. He was one of 2 priests that live there and was very knowledgeable on the history of the Abbey. The Abbey was originally built in the 9th century. All restoration work basically stopped about 5-6 years ago including that of the Last Supper paint by I think Ghirlandaio. It was likeing walking back in time 1000 years ago, complete with exiting doors and startled birds flying out of openings in the stonework. It was truly a memorable experience. If you happen, stop and walk around a bit. Maybe you will get lucky and be able to see the inside.
