“Very pleasant one-night stay”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

Stayed one night. The room was not huge, but was clean and contained adequate facilities for a short stay. It did present good value for money. However the food was excellent. Dinner was as good as any that we've had in a pub, and breakfast was very good too. I did sense that front of house staff were a little inexperienced, but this did not detract from our stay (I believe that an element of holiday cover was involved), I would highly recommend the Olway Inn.

We stayed at the Olway inn when attending a wedding in Wales. We arrived late on our first nights stay at the Olway Inn, but we were greeted by friendly staff. There were lots of people in the bar and there was a great atmosphere.
When we arrived in our room it was very cosy and a little on the small side, but the bathroom was of a good size and there was tea and coffee provided. The bed was extremely comfortable and the view from the window was lovely. We arrived during the Usk flower show and the hotel had clearly participated. The grounds looked beautiful. The ceilings are quite low, so be careful if you are tall!
The breakfast was great, a full English breakfast included, and there was a nice selection of cereals and fresh fruit.
Be careful when driving to this place though. The sat nav gets very confused with the postcode and both us and my parents got completely lost!
We had a lovely stay and would like to thank all the staff for making us feel so welcome.

Our second visit. Firstly accommodation - we had the same room (No. 4) as last year but we had forgotten how small the bed is! Only 4'6" I think which is quite narrow these days and plenty of room to have a bigger bed in that room. We were told last year it's their best room so we used it both times without question, however, it is over the kitchen so you have the noise of the kitchen fan until around 9pm, plus with the recent lovely weather - it's very hot!!! Others must have found this too as there is a fan in the wardrobe. Probably bearing this out, our little containers of milk in the bedroom had curdled - this was changed in the bar without problem.
The food is undoubtedly their best feature. We had eaten dinner on all three evenings of our stay last year, plus as we checked in, we asked for a reservation around 7-7.30pm for dinner, which we enjoyed on our first night.
On our second night, we duly went down for dinner around 7.15pm only to be told that there would be no food available for us for at least an hour as we hadn't booked. We left and ate elsewhere.
We saw Nicola on our return and she explained that unless you specifically book in, then they will assume you aren't dining with them as not all of their guests eat in. OK, so now we know their system, but I do think that on check-in, guests could be asked if they would like to dine, or at breakfast time .... and, we had sat in the lounge and had a glass of wine on Saturday afternoon we could have been asked then. If all of this is unreasonable as they are too busy running a successful business, then there is a notice in the bedroom for guests, perhaps they could add a comment along the lines of 'to avoid disappointment - if you would like to dine with us this evening, please remember to book a table'. It's a bit galling to be a resident and not be catered for, for dinner. They know what their system is, but they shouldn't assume that their guests do!

Room Tip: Maybe ask to see a couple of rooms before you decide on one.

As someone who routinely travels between Yorkshire and South Wales, I've plenty of experience of staying in hotels in South Wales. On this occasion, I realised that it made sense to find somewhere to stay en route, and Usk seemed very convenient.
The Olway Inn was a perfect choice. It's brilliantly located just off the A449 (the main Monmouth to Newport road), though tucked away down a quiet lane. The rooms are spotlessly clean and well equipped, the bar serves good food and drink, and the whole atmosphere is friendly and welcoming.
The added bonus for me is that it takes forty miles off my return journey to Wakefield in the monring.
I'm now kicking myself that it took me so long to discover it!

This won't take long!
We are frequently disappointed with Sunday lunches these days. We've eaten at the Olway several times in recent years and have always been impressed (Their pies are special).
A Sunday lunch is relatively easy to measure: is it good. Is it enough. Is it reasonably priced. The Olway has it down to a fine art on all counts.
When it's full it has a very buzzy, friendly atmosphere and the staff are quietly effective and pleasant while the bar still feels like a proper bar.
The meals are absolutely superb! Slow cooked shank of lamb was tasty and succulent. No fussing about with protocol: all Sunday lunches get a Yorkshire Pudding to save the need to ask! The vegetables are fresh and not over done and (sound fanfare) the roast potatoes are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. So many "posh" places seem to think it's OK to just throw the spuds in the oven when what I want is a well worked roasty like you get at the Olway. And the portions are large...which is great for the customer though you wonder if they cut back a tiny bit we may have had room for a desert which also looked great.
Thanks Olway...better than your peers by far.

We returned to Usk to visit friends at the end of May and stayed at the Olway for two nights. Our room was immaculate and well decorated. The breakfast was fantastic and enough to set you up for the day, though we could not resist Nicolas home made pie for dinner on the Saturday and Sunday roast before setting off for home.
Overall excellent value for money with friendly staff and added bonus of the nicest pub dog you will ever find. Location is perfect for exploring Usk and the surrounding walks, plus as easy drive into Cardiff (use park and ride).
