“Proximity to beach and wonderful sea views”
Reviewed 12 April 2014

The resort has wonderful sea views and has easy close access to beach and the tidal pool. Elderly people will enjoy the tidal pool as well as everyone else.Decor is rustic and resort is relaxed and fun.Not too many activities like other hotels but amenities are sufficient

A long-awaited three-day holiday at Salt Rock Hotel proved disappointing. The setting is indeed superb. The "deluxe" room, however, was basic at best. Shower over the bath with plastic curtain. Toilet cistern took hours to refill; with three adults sharing, this was a problem. Accommodation for additional adult(s) or children is a glass cublcle. The much-vaunted patio can't be used other than in overcast weather as it is entirely open to the elements; the cement seats and immobile, cemented-in table - with no cushions supplied - extremely uncomfortable. Booked in for DBB, we cancelled dinner after the first night owing to severe disappointment at the mediocre fare on offer. Breakfast was good, but who can mess up breakfast? One teabag, one coffee sachet, one milk serving supplied per person per day. Try making tea/coffee for three on the top of a tiny fridge-top! Worst of all ... no bedside lamps!!! Half the staff was lovely, the other half surly and neglectful. Won't be going back there, so sad.

Room Tip: Don't pay extra for a "deluxe" room

What a superb setting. Stunning views of the sea and beach from most rooms and easy access to the beach and tidal pool. Some rooms are on two levels whilst other rooms open onto their own balcony....so if you are elderly possibly ask for the later. Reasonable rates, fair restaurant, stunning swimming pool and the staff were extremely helpful, cheerful and professional. There is an old world charm to this hotel and we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Would suggest up grading the plumbing soon as some taps on opening indicated semi blocked pipes, as occasional bits of rust and uneven pressure of water flow was/were released! Not a serious situation yet but something that needs to be attended to.

We loved our stay at Salt Rock and our holiday break there was truly relaxing and fun.

The rooms were clean and comfortable. We had a room with a small kitchenette which was super for our 2 small children. The space in the room was well used and made the stay very comfortable. Sea views fantastic. Only point the bin was tiny and not great when you have small children.

The meals were good. Lots on offer and enough selection to find something to eat. We enjoyed the lovely roast meats as well as the very tasty curries on offer at dinner. The selection at breakfast was great and my son thoroughly enjoyed the offer and ordering the eggs the way he liked them. Only point and not a huge problem - pork sausages are far tastier than chicken. The staff were always friendly and helpful.

We loved the mornings at the pool, made very comfortable with loungers and waiter service to the pool. Lunches were enjoyed at the pool and my son gives a double thumbs up for great toasted sandwiches. The beach was an easy walk to and enjoyed afternoons in the granny pool and exploring the tidal pools. The childrens play area was an added bonus.

The hotel is over looking the beach and over a few levels. Therefore loads and loads of stairs, which was not great with a buggy.

Wifi connection is poor and expensive. To be honest a problem in South Africa and not only this hotel. Will definitely be returning to Salt Rock Hotel.

I really liked this hotel. We stayed in Room 604 which is on two levels and has the most breath taking views of the ocean. The whole place has a rather relaxed, old fashioned feel to it, which I personally love. OK so some of the rooms are a little tired, but there seems to be a refurbishment going on, and for my part I love shabby chic.

The restaurant is something else ! I can't think when I've seen a better quality, or more tastier buffet... a fragrant, slightly pink roast leg of lamb was a highlight... as were the breakfasts. Only wish I'd asked for the recipe to make the tomato chutney they served with the bacon and eggs. It would make a fortune at our village Fete.

We were lucky enough to be at Salt Rock for Valentines Day. I'd certainly love to come back.

Room Tip: Room 604 certainly has the wow factor as you walk in !

“Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got. Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot. Wouldn't you like to get away? Sometimes you want to go. Where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came”.

Returning to Salt Rock Hotel for a short holiday after I stayed there for a workshop, I find myself humming the theme song of sitcom Cheers. For those under-age, this series is situated in a bar owned by Sam Malone (played by Ted Danson) and his band of loser friends and colleagues.

Cheesy or not - and not wanting to compare anyone with the Cheers characters - there is something really comforting in returning to a place where the people remember you and treat you as if you are family they love. Add to that a buffet of good quality homestyle-cooking (the vegetable breyani is excellent), clean and renovated sea-facing rooms – some are awaiting their face-lift -, body massages on the premises, a large relaxing pool area, and splendid tidal pool a step away. A more perfect and affordable getaway is not to behold on this part of the KZN North Coast.

We have booked our 3rd stay in April. Like!

Room Tip: Rooms with A/C and balcony
